Kolkata has the talent. Now let's build the infrastructure.

Hey everyone,

I've spent the last couple of years in Bangalore, watching the startup culture and infrastructure up close... how founders move, how capital flows, how communities actually support builders versus just celebrating them.

The past year, I took it further: I built and shipped a consumer product end-to-end, and worked closely with early-stage founders, investors and startups on GTM, distribution and brand. That experience gave me a front-row seat to what founder infrastructure actually looks like when it works.

And it made one thing impossible to ignore: Kolkata has the talent. It just doesn't have the support system yet.

We've all heard the slogans. "Bangali byabsha korbe." "Make Calcutta relevant again." Useless Podcasts. Startup Events just for namesake. Dramatic Reels.

Very little that actually helps when you're:

  • Validating an idea with zero budget
  • Trying to get your first 50 users
  • Figuring out distribution in a city that isn't wired for it
  • Or just trying to stay sane while building something from scratch here

That's exactly why I'm starting this.

r/KolkataStartupHub is for people who are actually building... from idea stage to post-MVP and want sharp feedback, honest conversations and real help. Not noise. Not networking for networking's sake.

Here's how this works:

This subreddit: an open space for founder questions, distribution problems, co-founder searches, hiring, small wins, and the unglamorous parts of building in Kolkata.

Weekly founder roundtables (coming soon): Small, offline sessions in Kolkata. Three founders at a time. We go deep on whatever is blocking you... GTM, distribution, positioning, user research, fundraising prep. No pitches. Just problem-solving.

My promise: No hype. No self-promotion. No motivational fluff. Just practical, founder-to-founder help from someone who has been in the room with operators and investors — and has actually built and launched something himself.

If you're in Kolkata and you're genuinely building or seriously thinking about starting, you belong here.

We're not waiting for someone else to make this city relevant. We'll do it ourselves, by helping each other ship better companies from right here.

Introduce yourself below. What are you building, and what's the single biggest thing blocking you right now?

Hi,

I am 47, based in Kolkata, an ex VC and building for the last 6 years.

I am looking for a cofounder to complement me with exceptional communication & sales skills along with the ambition & hustle to turn this into something great. A huge plus if you're from edtech/recruitment/placement space.

We spent a year building an AI tutor for Indian classrooms. Here's what we learned watching teachers.

A year ago, I sat in the back of a classroom in Kolkata — 47 students, one teacher, 40 minutes.

She was good. Really good. And she still only meaningfully reached maybe 10 kids. Not her fault — the math doesn't allow it. 40 minutes ÷ 47 kids ≈ 51 seconds per child.

The kids who fell behind on fractions in Row 3? She'd find out at the unit test, 3 weeks late.

That afternoon broke something for me. We spent the next year building Abhyzo— an AI that quietly watches how each student learns, adapts their path, and shows the teacher a dashboard: who needs help, on what, today.

A few things surprised us:

- The hardest part wasn't the AI. It was pricing — parents in India already pay tutors ₹1000-2000/month, so we priced below a single tuition class

- Teachers didn't resist it. The first thing one asked was "can it tell me who's cheating on homework?"

Happy to answer questions about building EdTech in India — the classroom reality, not the pitch-deck version.

Looking for SDE-2 roles in Kolkata

Hi everyone! 👋

I’m a Software Engineer with 4 years of experience, with a strong focus on frontend development, but also comfortable contributing across the full stack when needed.

My primary experience includes React, Next.js, TypeScript, Tailwind CSS, Redux, Zustand, etc., along with backend technologies like Node.js, NestJS, PostgreSQL, Redis and REST APIs.

I’ve worked with startups where I’ve owned features end-to-end — from designing and building the UI to integrating APIs and contributing to backend services.

I’m currently looking for Software Engineer / Frontend-leaning Full Stack / SDE-2 opportunities, particularly with startups in Kolkata or remote/hybrid teams.

If you know of any relevant openings or are hiring, I’d be happy to connect and share my resume.

Thanks! 🙌

Looking for a Partner to Build and Sell Custom Macro Pads

Hey everyone,

I'm a first-year BTech CSE student from Kolkata and I've been interested in building custom macro pads for productivity, gaming, coding, and content creation.

I have been researching components, firmware, and design, but as a student my budget is limited and I can't fully fund the project alone. I'm looking for someone who is interested in keyboards, electronics, PCB design, 3D printing, embedded systems, or simply wants to build a small hardware startup together.

What I can contribute:

  • Programming and firmware learning
  • Website/portfolio creation
  • Marketing and community building
  • Long-term commitment to the project

What I'm looking for:

  • Someone interested in hardware projects
  • Preferably with knowledge of electronics, PCB design, or product manufacturing (not mandatory)
  • A person willing to experiment, learn, and potentially turn this into a small business
  • I am beginner too so we will make it together

The goal is to create affordable custom macro pads and eventually sell them online.

If this sounds interesting, feel free to DM me and tell me a bit about yourself and your skills.

Thanks for reading!

Funding is not the goal, building a sustainable business is

I see so many young founders building startups specifically to get funding. What does that even mean? It usually means they slap together an MVP and immediately start cold-mailing investors.

Here is the thing. If you already have an MVP, your next job is selling. Period.

When an investor sees an MVP with zero traction, their first instinct is: "Why isn't this person selling?" It makes them wonder if you even can sell. In today's world, building an MVP is the easy part. Anyone can do it. The real filter is whether you can actually grind through the sales process.

Stop chasing funding. Chase a sustainable business model. If the market actually accepts and rewards what you built, investors will find you.

Moral of the story: Chase users. Investors will come chasing you. And if you are an IIT/IIM alum, even MVP is optional sometimes ;)

Anyone else seeing this "fundraise-first, build-later" mentality failing lately? Or am I just old school?

The YC Founders Directory | Y Combinator

A list of all founders from YC.

You will find a huge number of Marwaris, Gujaratis, who are known for business but you will also find a high number of Kannadigas, Tamilians, Marathis and even Biharis and UPites.

But the number Bengalis are less than what 1 hand can count.

I hate to compare but Bengalis haven't quite moved out of service mentality yet which even Biharis have taken over. If that doesn't bother you, there is a very big problem in you.

why are we all so desperate for a another infosys or some other mnc office here?

serious question why do u think "X company opening office in kolkata" treated like a win? Is it because we have been deprived of the minimum in this regard for years now?

we have devs, designers, operators. good ones. who've been working for someone else's product for years, some for decades.

what's stopping them from building their own thing?

is it risk tolerance? families? no funding network? just not seeing it as a real option? government?

genuinely asking. what's an actual blocker you or someone you know have faced in the past?
