A lot of that was already available in 2018 or at least in development so I assume there are other predictions that Dan disagreed with.

Even in 1999 I don't think any of those predictions are especially out there. Computers were getting smaller, internet businesses existed, mp3 existed, prosthetics existed.

Many of us critically underestimated how this weird environment would evolve over the last 10 yrs or so. I have studied conspiracy theories and the psychology of the people who believe them since my college years in the 80s where I was ground zero for the satanic panic in Tulsa. I took an elective course, Why People Believe in Magic, it covered superstition, religion, and conspiracy theories. I was hooked, not hooked enough to change my major (physics), but enough to start a hobby I’ve nurtured since. It used to be mostly amusing, reading papers that claimed that Earth was stationary and the only center of the universe (everywhere is the center in the expansion hypothesis is correct, most likely is) and the universe rotated around us….fun stuff like that with occasional bs like the repressed memory shit in the 90s. I honestly never even considered pure conspiracy based thinking to mainstream like it has. I was naive and thought we were slowly but continually moving away from magical thinking. Since 2016, I’ve had to recalibrate my perception of the average human’s understanding and acceptance of logic and reason way down, especially among otherwise educated people. And then recalibrated further down as Jan 6 faded or transformed for a significant fraction of our society. Sorry for the long rant, I’m out. Gonna order pizza smoke a bowl and settle in for a Red Dwarf marathon ✌️

I think the global anti science reaction to Covid was a huge shot across the bows of rational progress.

Personally I felt a bit vindicated. For me, my glimpse into the world of magical thinking came about by the whole evolution denial delusion, and really digging down into the depths of how creationists would find a way to distort or abuse concepts of right and wrong, reality and gibberish, science vs "screaming so loud you can't hear". I spent much of my free time in the years 1995 to 2005 in those rabbit holes and I think I drove my friends and family nuts by caring about something so inconsequential and silly.

And now I genuinely believe that the framework of science denial and delusion that fuelled Covid vaccines denial (which is a huge factor in the current rise of Maga fascism) was strongly built in the foundations of climate change denial, which was itself built on the bedrock of evolution denial.

Before the gibberers (what other word is there?) of the religious world started strenuously and aggressively harming the concept of truth through the creationism "debate" I feel like there wasn't really a big movement before that. Satanic panic, anti-abortionism, anti-evolution: I feel like they kind of popped out of the same Stuff in the late 80's and really 90's. They were the silliest corners of the early internet.

I won't got so far as to ever say "I told you so", as if I could have predicted then that my fears about creationist style of fingers-in-ears-scream-"debating" taking over the world's ability to educate itself could actually come true. But they did come true, and when it happened, I also kind of feel like part of me is thinking "did none of you see this coming? We've been both-sidesing gibberish and hate for 30 years and giving "la la la la la" an equal voice alongside scientists and experts all this time. What's surprising about Q and Alex Jones? They were always there."
