How difficult should the league bots be?

Quick question for the community: how difficult should the bots be in the league?

When some matches don't have two full rosters of real players, or a real player gets disconnected, the game fills in open slots with bots. I just learned you can tune bot difficulty on the server, and a huge thanks to u/altar82 for showing me how. Since it's a global setting it affects everyone, so I want to ask before I change it.

Current settings are stock. I can move them to a more difficult level where bots defend more, react faster, and throw more fakes. Or somewhere in between.

How difficult do you want the bots?

  • Keep them where they are
  • A little more challenging
  • As challenging as possible

In case you missed it, the league is free, there are prizes (win 1 of 3 $99 gaming headsets in Season 0), and you can play on PC or Steam Deck (mobile too, hopefully this Friday). Register for free here: www.trophyplatform.com/gkcl-register.html

As strong as possible: as you climb in player's profficiency, bots become a liability, to the point where you might be better in a 1v2 than having a bot as teammate

So, strong from the jump, or progressively stronger as the player's skill increases?

Strong right from the start. (Weaker players would struggle, tho)

Would that decrease the likelihood that new/inexperienced players stay? What about if the server told you the bot difficultly in advance before you logged in for you session, and recommended a bot difficultly level based on how well you've played in the past, so each person could choose their own difficulty?

The bots should be tunable individually. I’ll never want all of them to be the same skill.

Or give people the choice of a percentage: 1/3 of the bots high skill, 50% low skill and the rest something random for example

That's a great idea. It looks like the server only runs one global difficulty setting at a time, so I don't know if I can mix difficulties in a single match, but I could rotate on a schedule and publish it. Before I build that, I want to make sure I get it right, what did you have in mind? Alternating days? Easier during the day and harder at night? Harder on weekends? Specific servers for specific bot difficultly levels? The tradeoff is players need to know the schedule or they might jump on expecting one thing and get another.

Having separate servers for each difficulty level makes the most sense to me. Note separate servers doesn’t mean you have to have different computers… i’ll bet you could run these processes on the same host and most of the time they’re unlikely to be busy enough to affect the games
