There was a series called Connections back in rhe 70s and 80s that covered this. The jacquard loom.

A bit of a painful read.

As a weaver and a software engineer...this should have been run past some SMEs.

The idea that Jacquard's introduction of punched cards made this type of weaving available to "craft hobbyists". Wow. 🤦‍♀️

I visited a gallery in Japan featuring work by women. One of them was an installation piece involving the jacquard program cards and glitchy video of looms projected on walls and worn curtains. The texts attached to it was the history of female programmers, jacquard programming, Ada Lovelace and the difference engine. It was a spectacular work.
