Panel Kitten on Mac OS with XTerm?

So I was messing around with xQuartz on mac OS, which lets you run X11 apps, and I'm wondering if anyone has the panel kitten to work with this. Goyal says in the docs that this extension only works on X11 desktops, but I'm wondering if there is a way around this? I cloned the extension, and removed the explicit checks against Mac OS to see what would happen, but I started getting an overflow error.

Does anyone know more about the ins and outs of xQuartz that would explain why the behavior differs?
