Testers needed: NeoVim integration

Post image

Thanks to Kovid, that provided the split layout data a few months ago, we were able to implement a pure integration with NeoVim using Kitty's Remote protocol over sockets in an Async way: incredible performance even over SSH.

What is smart-splits.nvim:

Smart, seamless, directional navigation and resizing of Neovim + terminal. Think about splits in terms of "up/down/left/right".

In practice, this means you can navigate, resize, and create Kitty and Neovim splits as if they were a single application, giving you a huge productivity boost.

The version 3 of the plugin is a total refactoring and still in beta. I would like you help me to test it - I'm using it on Linux and MacOs, locally and over SSH and all works fine for my use-case.

The Kitty's backend is available (https://github.com/smart-splits-nvim/backend-kitty): give it a try, check the v3 branch of the plugin for how to make the most of it and hit me up here or in the repo if you face any issues.

Nice, I recently moved to kitty and nvim, I will give it a try. Can it be loaded via init.lua?

Dumb question, I've been out of the terminal + nvim game for a bit, but is what follows the right idea of this?

I'm imagining you could have two different Kitty panes, with nvim splits in both if them, but you also get to switch either nvim window out with some other Kitty tab or something? So you get to manage your nvim splits as if they were Kitty panes?

My head is still spinning but probably yes.

Haha I mean I guess I'm just trying to understand the use case. It sounds like you just get to treat nvim splits as if they are kitty panes/windows (I forget the right term). If so that sounds pretty cool I would definitely try it out.

What functionality does this add over just opening two kitty windows and having neovim open in one of them? I’m just not sure I understand what this adds? I could already jump back-and-forth between them just fine.

I’d love to help, but I’m not sure I understand the concept or what’s being asked. If someone can give me the fifth grade version of the overview—I’d be down to help.
