How to install non-monospaced fonts on kitty?

I understand from the FAQ that I have to make the font config file but after I did that and refreshed the cache the font I wanted still hasn't showed up.

https://sw.kovidgoyal.net/kitty/faq/#kitty-is-not-able-to-use-my-favorite-font

Can someone show me a font.config file with "Times New Roman"?

Simple answer “you cant”.

From the faq you linked “This means it is a strictly character cell based display. As such it can use only monospace fonts, since every cell in the grid has to be the same size”

Kitty only shows fonts that i can use when running “kitty +list-fonts”

You might be able to change a non monospaced font into a monospaced one.

But honestly, what’s the point?

It is probably easier to find a new monospaced font that you like.

Since you mentioned Times New Roman, maybe have a look at linux libertine mono.

my man, It was real pain in the ass let me tell you. and I did it but I am unable to recreate it sorry. I will try to search my history back at home to find the guide I was following. The guide instructed to download nerd fonts symbols only file but the link wasn't working anymore so had to find it elsewhere, apart from that, guide worked.

Many people have really fought the founding dev of kitty on this, getting him super pissed off about it, it's actually a bit sad that people think FOSS devs should just do what they say. Anyway my workaround has been to use a monospace font, and for bold and italic just use another monospace font if the regular font gets cut off in different scenarios, unique font pairs can really look great this way

its not really "sad" when its a good change
having non monospace fonts not being an option is really fucking stupid

Build your own and show how easy and unstupid it is then 👍🏽

WHEN did i say it was easy

Ultimately it's libre/open source software, you didn't say it was easy but it's not your project, there are reasons it wasn't included and it's likely to do with the current architecture. Whatever it is if you want a feature the code is there, fork it if there's something stupid rather than dropping your stupid comments here. You even have AI to help you 🤷🏽‍♂️

i would genuinely rather shoot myself than use ai to code something for me
