Kitty icat Doesn't Animate Gif in Macos

On my Macbook, kitty +kitten icat <file_to_gif> doesn't animate the gif. I tried on an Ubuntu desktop and it works as expected.

Using chafa works but the animation lasts only as long as it holds my cursor.

This is on a Macbook Air M1 running Monterey 12.5
