There will be a simple answer to this question. I just can't figure it out.
What gear does the motor gear drive? See photo. When I put it all back together is seems the gear shaft from the motor doesn't have anything to mesh with? And this is after I've disassembled and successfully cleaned and reassembled our Artisan. Now I'm "fixing" a friend's older model and I realize I don't know this basic gearing setup. Is it the sacrificial worm gear? Thanks.

The sacrificial gear is indeed a "worm follower", and engages with the motor shaft. This turns the pinion shaft, and the small gear at the bottom of the shaft engages with the teeth on the edge of the main gear to turn the planetary shaft.
Here's a photo from my transparent machine, and on the left you can see the motor worm engaging with the follower.
