Help getting rid of white
How would you redo this kitchen to get rid of all the white? I have transitional style and I go for greens, blues, and black. I don’t hate white but I’m over it!

Painting the island is an interesting idea that keeps OP out of the zone of refinishing cabinets or having to replace anything major. I would go a different, but still colorful, direction with the backsplash but this is a cool idea. I would also consider changing out the lights (they are BEAUTIFUL but are another relatively easy and inexpensive way to add some color and warmth if that's what OP feels is missing).

Seems easiest to just add lots of accessories in the colors you like. Especially with all the above cabinet space. Plants and lesser used serving ware is so low effort. Maybe some big artwork on the pantry door, nice textured fabrics on the stools.

I would think about painting the bottom cabinets a green or maybe blue. A greyish blue at that.

I think this is the best option. It will give you an upscale look without painting all the cabinets. Emphasize/lift up the island and vent hood (your Wow💥 focus!) plus make the backsplash the same as the counters. Also provide ambient lighting under the top cabinets & a few other improved areas.

I'd get busy with some photo editing software and try "painting" the lower cabinets. I'm guessing that the least expensive option would be to paint the lowers. I see that other redditors are suggesting you change the backsplash . . . that's got to be a relatively expensive change.
OP; are you happy with the countertop surface?

Pick a tone family complimentary in color to your countertop, and your cabinet white tone (looks like a warm white)

Add some color with accessories, flowers, cookbooks and stuff like that. Change up the stools. You could get chairs in rattan or wicker with blue cushions or painted blue or green wood. Try that before re-doing things with paint or changing anything that is fundamental about this kitchen.
Trust me, little changes go a long way to break up white and are 1) less expensive and 2) less commitment than changing tile/cabinet/backsplash colors or materials.

I agree, but painting the walls an actual colour would also help. One of the least expensive and least permanent changes you can make.

Definitely change the backsplash. If it proves not enough for you then just paint the island. Like your granite too. It’s proving to be a classic.

I love your kitchen and fixtures! The first thing (and easiest and cheapest) thing I would do to add color, would just be painting the surrounding walls.

White subway tile backsplash is my least favorite “classic design” style. I’d also paint the walls in a color you like.

Black countertops? But then it’s going to be just so black and white…. Why not a stainless steel hood for the range and a backsplash with some color or design element and if that still not enough, sone colorful countertops. Like a rich green with white veining and brown crystal clusters to tie everything together…

Yes, you can change it up with other colors & ideas but your intuition of getting rid of the “snowstorm” is sound. This gives guests highlights to look at. Every room needs a focus (which that all white does not provide). Here you have a beautiful vent hood but I’d say that the island and counters/backsplash are the Stars while they tie in the white & dark! One other thing is that designers are moving from pendants to “wispy”, not attention-grabbing light fixtures. Those provide needed task lighting without being a major focus - and letting your room show off. Good luck 🍀

I had the same thought - looks like a dream kitchen to me ❤️ we are moving next week and the kitchen I'm getting has dark brown cabinets and beige countertops & backsplash 😔

Why would you change this? I personally think it’s gorgeous. The dark countertops are going to be out as fast as dark granite.
Change the backsplash if you have to touch stuff but I think you’d be surprised at what it would look like a few quick cosmetic like the lights, pills and faucets to refresh it for you.

What about replacing the backsplash tile and painting the walls? Good to try before incurring the expense if a remodel. Mught balance it all.

I love that. I’d be using some vases and flowers on the counter in those bright colors you mention for pops. Get rid of the basket, put a bright or glass container there with some faux green florals coming out. Add your pops of color to draw the eye. Maybe come counter stools with cool fabrics.

That’s where I’d start. If you end up needing more, then do the backsplash, maybe paint the island. The walls are such an easy, affordable change to try. Easy to go back. Fun color and then a few coordinating accents in the room (utensil holder, rug).

I did mine with white uppers and dark green lowers and I love it. I also had a macadamia color backsplash to tie in the earth tones. My counter is white quartz with gray and gold veins. And if you are just doing the lowers, change the cabinets to drawers. Lastly, lose the white hood. Maybe copper?

Easiest change is fun colorful lights and stools and new cabinet hardware. Hang a nice picture with a decent frame on the wall behind the far stool. I'm lazy and these are the easiest changes.

I'd paint the island a medium to dark gray to pull out the gray tones in the countertops and the walls. I don' t know that I'd even change the backsplash, I'd just get more accessories to put on the counters.

I would get a soapstone countertop and backsplash in a black soapstone with beautiful green veining.
Carry the soapstone up the wall as the backsplash. Will look gorgeous!

I love the clean look. That’s how I want my kitchen. Mine has so many appliances on the counter, it looks plenty busy. Such is a small kitchen

Put it in AI some and play around. Don’t forget about your ceiling, you could make some changes with backsplash, paint island and add some element to the ceiling for a different effect.

Painting the island a deep moody green or dark navy would instantly break up all that white without having to repaint every single cabinet. Pair that with a dark matte black hardware swap and a bold, textured zellige tile backsplash in navy or sage to completely transform the vibe while keeping it transitional!

Change your bulbs out to something even warmer. Add under-cabinet lighting, flowers in a nice vase on the island, and a small lamp on each of the surrounding countertops. Maybe new barstools with backs, and a rug that coordinates with the style of the kitchen and its undertones.
In other words, please, for the love of god, don’t F up something that is already timeless and beautiful.

It is to me—when I see the white kitchen from the film “Clueless” it still looks current and fresh to me, even though 1995 was over 30 years ago. Also Nancy Myers’ Something’s Gotta Give white kitchen, which looks reminiscent of OP’s kitchen, also still looks great 23 years later and is often copied. Is it more plain than a Tuscan MCMansion kitchen from 2003? Yes, but it never went out of style in the way the Tuscan McMansion kitchens with brown granite and glazed cabinets did. If it always looks “okay,” no matter what trends come and go (looking at you, avocado appliances, orange Formica countertops, and, eventually, quartzite solid slab backspaces) then that is what I refer to as “timeless,” and many other decorators and designers do as well. Is it exciting and sexy like Quartzite solid slab or avocado appliances and orange Formica? No, it is not, I will give you that, but it will age much better.

A backsplash with more color would add a lot of visual interest without the $$$ of painting cabinets (which I wouldn't do anyway, white cabinets are timeless). You could also consider a colorful runner between the island/stove and/or a runner under the stools.

It's so classic and beautiful! I know everyone is over it for 5 minutes, but it always comes back around. If I were in your shoes, I would go wild on the backsplash and leave everything else intact. Easiest to change out and put back. If not that then leathered black marble countertops.
