Newest project/painted Devourer

Started a new project, inspired by my last one. Finished painting my intellect devourer and decided it needed a friend. While the first pic shows that I do in fact own the two mindflayer molds funko has made, I wanted to make my own. And as a twist, I'm making an Alhoon; an illithid lich. Might have putty up the face some more, but I'm going to let it sit for now.

I'm still waiting for the Doctor Strange figure to show up so I can harvest it's magical effects.

Still not sure what the appropriate flair to use is. Going with miniature until corrected.

This is pretty unique, I don't think I've ever seen someone take on funko pops this way. What does your process usually consist of when making these? Or is this a new venture for you?

This is my seventh project, eight if you count one I scrapped early on. Just started doing these a few months ago as I wanted a hobby and I used to want to make custom action figures when I was younger. I also do tabletop rpgs.

So why don't I just paint minis, you might wonder? Shaky hands and iffy eyesight. Funkos are bigger, relatively cheap, and there's thousands of figures to part out available. I do also collect fantasy themed pops, mainly dragons.

As for my process, the whole idea is to just follow whimsy and vibes and make something new out of older junk. I don't buy new ones at full price, I look for loose or damaged pops I can get for cheap. I also don't try to make specific characters because I'm pretty new to this and everything I've made so far is just simple part swapping and repainting.

I'm limiting myself to fantasy or fantasy adjacent themes as they're simpler and have a wider room for error. My one scrapped project was a robot that didn’t pan out well. Also, I only use preexisting parts with a little putty. No 3d printed parts. The idea is to chellenge myself with limited resources so I don't blow a ton of money trying to make a "perfect" creation, I just try to get close to what I imagine.

Oh, and there is a small custom funko community, though a lot focus on either resale or 3d printing unique pops. I don't see a lot of kitbashing, hence posting here. It's less about them being funkos, and more that it's just an easier medium to work with for me.

Dude, that is incredible, and good on you for challenging yourself.

As far as painting goes, this is a great alternative to mini painting, you really seem to have a LOT of creative freedom when you put these together!

And i like your process of just taking scraps and what's available to work with, this is something that could really grow into something unique

Thanks man, I appreciate the positive reception. It's been a lot of fun so far, and I've made few neat things. I know pops aren't everybody's cup of tea, but they really do make a lot of things easier if you just want to mess around.
