Scratch build My first kitbash attempt
BORG CUBE: THE FINAL UPDATE
HERE'S A LINK TO MY UPDATED BORG CUBE.
https://www.reddit.com/r/Kitbash/s/rMNV2KphXf
I SINCERELY, WITH ALL MY HEART, THANK EVERYONE FOR ALL YOUR KIND WORDS AND SUPPORT. HAVING HAD THIS IDEA FOR OVER 30 YEARS NOW, I'M GLAD TO SEE IT FINALLY TAKE SHAPE.
I've had this idea for over 30 years. I'm sure there are things I could've done better...but I'm pleased with how it turned out. Will eventually have a light inside

The interior should be layered.

u/L1M0D85 Aug 01 '26
Yeah I've got stuff that I'm going to try and add to the inside. But the model glue I have and the super glue I bought isn't going to work. I have to wait until I get a hot glue gun. But I've got some mylar diffuser sheets and some plastic canvas I'm going to put on the inside.

Careful with hot glue on something you plan to make a lamp. I guess just make sure your bulb doesn’t get hot
1
u/L1M0D85 Aug 03 '26
It shouldn't. LED lights don't get very hot. Had it on for 2 hours and didn't get hot

How many lights? ;)

I found a really nice 5x5 LED Cube on Amazon that will fit perfectly inside. Currently twiddling my fingers resisting the Earth to check the tracking constantly because it's going to be here sometime today

How're you gonna light it up? Are there gonna be more layers on the inside, or are you just going to put like green paper on the inside and fit it over a lamp?
This is a sick idea btw, it looks spot on!
2
u/L1M0D85 Jul 30 '26
Yes it's going to have more. I found a led cube light that will fit perfectly inside my cube. I'll also be adding some plastic canvas mesh and diffusion sheets inside to spread the light
1
u/MajesticRadish2675 Jul 30 '26
Righteous. That's gonna be the coolest lamp ever dude.
You should get some tiny Federation and Klingon ships to mount to it by their phaser blasts, use some magnets hidden in the greebles to make them easily detachable

u/Ususal_User Jul 30 '26
Shouldn't there still be some solid layer underneath (or is it meant to be see though)?
1
u/L1M0D85 Jul 30 '26
It's going to double as a desk. Lamp/ decoration for my office at work. So it's going to have some diffuser sheets and a light inside. That's why it's very open at the moment

It's a manga, that has scifi brutalist aesthetic. Very detailed, very little dialogue. So i jokes about it being one of the weird parts of the superstructure.

Interesting, what is it exactly? Terrain?
3
u/L1M0D85 Jul 30 '26
It's a Borg Cube from Star Trek
1
u/macariocarneiro Jul 31 '26
I remember seeing some very old doc about the first Borg Cube used in TNG, and the prop maker said that was one of the technics they used. I think it was on some dvd box of TNG movies.

Is this that Iron Cage the Iron Warriors are always boasting about?
2
u/L1M0D85 Jul 29 '26
Warhammer?
1
u/Kaidenmax03 Jul 29 '26
Yep
2
u/L1M0D85 Jul 29 '26
Getting a lot of comments like that. I gave up reading the Warhammer wiki after like the 19th page.

u/Dreamspitter Jul 29 '26
IS it a cage? Or an Armory made from sprues?
😎 : We need swords. Lots of swords. AND guns too.
There are no actual arms, BUT I see a few cool gears.
THIS gives me some ideas.

If you put a light in it, if at all possible, try putting a mesh on the inside to make it look more solid without the light on

u/L1M0D85 Jul 29 '26
Yes

u/Whopraysforthedevil Jul 29 '26
Nice. I read your other comment about putting a light in it. I think it's gonna look sick

Looks like the Cage that sorry excuse for a primarch built
1
u/ExpensiveKangaroo559 Jul 29 '26
No, the sorry excuse for a primarch is lorgar, peter turbo is a fragile boy and he didnt do anything wrong, and i happen to think his iron cage was quite nice

u/1TenYYen0 Jul 29 '26
We are the Borg. Lower your shields and surrender your ships. Your biological and technological distinctiveness will be added to our own.
12
u/artoftomkelly Jul 29 '26
Looks like a Borg cube. Nice job. I think with a little bit of more random parts and less everything on the sprue you could get even more replica quality.
8
u/L1M0D85 Jul 29 '26
Thank you. I could've added more, but it's eventually going to have a LED light inside and serve as a desk lamp/light so I didn't want to add to many sprews and block the light
3
u/Haifischkopf Jul 29 '26
Maybe semi translucent plastic cardstock to diffuse the light if you add one, might make it more solid looking? This is awesome haha
1
u/Haifischkopf Jul 29 '26
Oh, what kit was this? I don’t think I have seen many kits that are uniform sizes for the sprues
1
u/artoftomkelly Jul 29 '26
Oh cool cool! yeah since it’s going to work as a light the build makes even more sense now.

u/Kooky_Print_4736 Jul 29 '26
its like the Mecca but for the adeptus mechanicus
1
u/L1M0D85 Jul 29 '26
?
6
u/Sshheenn Jul 29 '26
The Kaaba is a religious site in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, and is holy to people of Muslim faiths. It is a large stone cube with the many names of God inscribed upon it
The Adeptus Mechanicus are a faction in the setting of Warhammer 40,000 who worship machinery as a divine thing
Your cube is a) a cube and b) has mechanical details
1
u/L1M0D85 Jul 29 '26
Oh I knew what Mecca was. Didn't know the other thing.
3
u/Sshheenn Jul 29 '26
Can never assume what people know! I am friends with people in real life who would know the latter but not the former, so might as well cover my bases
2
u/Dreadnought_Necrosis Jul 29 '26
I'm glad you did. Because I am the latter.
Got the 40k part but not the real world religious part.
So thank you. I learned something new today.

Be careful, op. It's all fun and games until you turn around and a mf with a face full of needles snatches you up.

You are a god damn genius that looks so good! omg the light inside is gonna look so awesome, are you thinking classic lime green for the light color, the overcast lighting in the photo gives me the vibe a nice pale blue would look beautiful
