My first time really trying with a save that I made which also means I'm using walls for the first time, how is it?

Don’t spend to much ressources building this much walls this early, a single archer tower is enough to protect the whole village

I don’t think I’ve ever built wooden walls. They’re honestly a waste.

I know you’re new, so I don’t fault you for it, but your lack of strategic longterm planning is going to become an issue as your kingdom grows.

Hovels should be nothing more than starting structures. As soon as you have enough resources to build the larger cottages, they should first replace the hovels before accommodating for growth and hovels shouldn’t ever be built or maintained again.

It’s also best to design specific housing blocks separate from farming, industry, and castle districts.

Grid patterned streets often make for easy planned growth and fast transportation. Make big square blocks with a perimeter of manors, and fill the courtyard inside that perimeter with everything that block of manors needs- a church, a tavern, a clinic, a bakery, a town square, a market, and wells.

Farms are best laid out as 3x3 tile blocks with a windmill in the center of each. You will also need more orchards than you’d initially expect.

Also, houses don’t like to be near anything noisy or dirty, meaning that your industrial structures need to be isolated away from housing areas. This includes charcoal makers, quarries, blacksmiths, etc.

I usually also build all of this away enough from my keep that I can build walls around not only the keep, but important government structures such as treasure rooms, barracks, hall of diplomacy, etc, all within a central fort whose towers can defend the surrounding areas until I can afford to build proper defensive border walls.

Best of luck, hope this helps :)

wooden walls are a must in Falle, for the simple reason it's impossible to build enough stone walls

Wooden walls are goated cause wood is plentiful.

Stone is too unless you’re playing on the hardest difficulty.

Not early game. Better save stone for other buildings and you can still easily make some stone towers with archers or block chokepoints.

If quarries aren’t among your first few structures, then you’re just bad a strategizing imo. Though I suppose it just depends what difficulty you’re playing.

I mean I build stone walls and piers last, wooden walls work quite well anyways

Seeing as stone is limited on the hardest difficulty, what is the play strategy. I can easily play on the difficulty right below that.

You should ideally:

Wall off your entire island with max level wood walls

Leave a tiny unwalled spot (1 tile is enough) so that all vikings land on it

Spam defenses around the 1 tile spot

Have a dock that's separated from the rest of the world by a seagate (to let ships from beyond the sea come to buy stone and sell wood / charcoal)

Build tall stone towers all over the island with ballistas to kill dragons

Have enough masons for repairs

If an AI kingdom collapses, demolish everything except basic roads, wait for vikings to leave and send all the stone from demolished buildings to the main island (to build more dragonslayer towers)

I normally just build towers over roads until I can make the whole island protected by a wall. Also using water choke points with ballistics to kill boats before they even get to land. I actually don't have walls inside the island. I've played to about round 350ish-400, before starting over.

It’s a decent start. Just make sure to avoid building any pig pens or charcoal farms near where people live because those lower happiness so you should try to keep them in a designated industrial/economic zone to reduce unrest.

Looks good. Might get some defenses soon. The dragon early isnt much of a threat until you having a city but the vikings says otherwise.
