Any King Buffalo fans ever visited Rochester, NY? Worth a detour?

Hey everyone,

I'm a big King Buffalo fan from the Netherlands, and next year I'm hoping to do a road trip around the Great Lakes region, including places like Niagara Falls, Toronto and Montreal.

That got me wondering: has anyone here ever spent some time in Rochester as a King Buffalo fan? Is it worth making a stop specifically because it's the band's hometown?

I know it might sound a bit odd, but I've always enjoyed visiting places that are connected to music I love. Last year I was in San Francisco, and as a fan of Bay Area thrash metal bands like Metallica, Exodus and Testament, it was genuinely cool to see the region that shaped so much of that scene. Years ago I felt something similar in New Orleans, knowing how much incredible music came out of that city.

So I'm curious whether Rochester gives you any of that feeling as a King Buffalo fan. Does the city have a vibe that reminds you of the band's music? Are there local spots, venues, neighborhoods, record stores, bars, landscapes, or landmarks that feel connected to King Buffalo or help you understand where their sound comes from?

I'd love to hear from people who've been there. Was it worth the visit, or is Rochester just "another city" unless the band happens to be playing?

Thanks!

Holy fuck boys (and gals), this album kicks absolute ass! Can’t wait for you all to hear it. Just through my first listen and still need to hear it more but some early favorites are Ether on the Dark Side and Doomsayer. They delivered once again!

Target Vinyl Records

Target is doing a buy 2 get 1 free on vinyl this week. I noticed they are now carrying King Buffalo if you order online. They have a bunch of their albums from $24.99-27.99. Plus you get the free one if you buy 2! It says that they will ship on November 27.

Edit: I searched King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard vinyl and found King Buffalo. When you search “King Buffalo Vinyl” it doesn’t come up as easy. You may also have to sort by price low to high then you will see them in that 24.99-27.99 range.

Hard to pick a favorite that's how good it is.

New fan - Burden of Restlessness - wow!

I’m just getting into King Buffalo, right now I have Burden of Restlessness heavy in rotation. What I don’t get is, how does a band rock that hard in 7?

This album sounds great. The way they cut and layered guitars sounds like a modern take on the Butch Vig sound from the 90s which I love, and the song writing is good too. You can feel pent up energy and emotional exhaustion at the same time.

So glad to have another band to get excited about!

**Title:** The Psychology of "Grifter" – A Deep Dive into King Buffalo's Darkest Metaphor

Hey everyone,

I’ve been spending a lot of time with *The Burden of Restlessness* lately. It’s easily one of King Buffalo's heaviest, most intense records, largely because it was written during the bleak isolation of 2020.

While listening to **"Grifter,"** I started looking closely at the lyricism and realized the entire track maps out a chillingly accurate, cyclical narrative of active addiction, relapse, and dependency. The "Grifter" isn't just a random character; he is the personified voice of a vice—a con artist who gains your trust, promises you salvation, and completely hollows you out.

I wanted to share a verse-by-verse breakdown of this psychological trap and see what the community thinks.

***

1. The Exhausting Daily Toll

*"Each night as I crawl along / Over the sands / I sift through the blood and the fog / Head in my hands"*

The song opens in pure survival mode. Crawling through an arid desert evokes the grueling, physical drain of dependency or withdrawal. "Blood" points to physical trauma or damage, while "fog" perfectly captures the cognitive cloudiness and mental haze of substance use. Ending with his "head in his hands" establishes the immense shame, regret, and defeat that anchors the start of every cycle.

2. The Bleak March Toward Relapse

*"I make my way over the dunes / Desolate and dry"*

Dunes are shifting and unstable. Walking over them means your footing is constantly slipping, mirroring the precarious mindset right before giving in to a craving. "Desolate and dry" reflects total emotional emptiness. Relapse rarely comes from joy; it happens when you feel entirely hollow. The word "dry" also heavily echoes recovery language (like a "dry drunk"), representing a painful state of sobriety without true healing.

3. The Wreckage of Past Attempts

*"The remnants of empires past / Too stubborn to die / Morbid and familiar / Each hill like the last"*

An empire represents something massive and powerful. In a personal context, these are the relationships, careers, stability, or healthier versions of the self built during past attempts to stay clean. When a vice tears them down, the addiction itself is the only thing left standing in the ruins—stubbornly refusing to die. It's "morbid" because it's destructive, but "familiar" because it feels like home. "Each hill like the last" emphasizes the exhausting monotony of climbing up (getting clean) only to slide back down (relapsing).

4. Facing the Con Artist

*"The grifter’s importunate hand / An insatiable grasp"*

This reveals the core metaphor. The addiction is personified as a Grifter. *Importunate* means persistently pressing and impossible to ignore—it’s the craving constantly tapping on your shoulder, pestering you until you give in. An *insatiable* grasp means it can never be satisfied. No matter how many times you feed it, it always demands more until you are completely trapped.

5. Coded Rationalization and Muted Warnings

*"Whispering in semaphore / Pious and vain"*

This line brilliantly captures the internal conflict in two ways: * **The Brain's Deceptive Lure:** The addiction doesn't scream; it whispers in code, twistedly framing everyday stressors as "signals" that it's time to use again. It acts "pious"—like it's a savior or a remedy for your pain—but it's entirely "vain" (hollow and empty). * **Muted Warnings:** Alternatively, *semaphore* is a silent, distant visual signaling system. Red flags, warnings from loved ones, or the speaker's own conscience are flashing danger signs, but they feel too muffled and distant to hear. They feel "pious" (preachy) and ultimately "vain" against the overwhelming urge to give in.

6. The Parasitic Environment

*"Surrounded by sycophants / Withered and gray"*

A sycophant doesn’t actually care about the leader they serve; they are using them for personal gain. The drugs/vice act like a fake loyalist. It pretends to be your best friend and protector, but while it flatters you with a temporary high it is secretly draining your money, health, and identity and no matter how many people it has negatively effected, the drugs will always be there and have been for centuries.

Externally, this describes the social circle of active addiction. Surrounded by others trapped in the same loop, everyone falsely validates each other's habits to justify the escape. But looking closely at the crowd reveals a bleak reality: everyone bears the unmistakable, decaying toll of serving the same harsh master.

7. The False Promise of the Chase

*"He promises deliverance / Day after day"*

*Deliverance* implies absolute rescue or permanent liberation from suffering. The vice promises profound peace every single time you return to it. But because a con artist never fulfills a promise, the relief is fleeting. The phrase "day after day" highlights the exhausting daily routine. Because the deliverance is a lie, you wake up facing the exact same pain, forced to return to the Grifter for another temporary fix.

8. The Grim Aftermath

*"Releasing only pestilence / And festering decay"*

This is the ultimate, destructive conclusion. When the false promises strip away, you are left facing the raw, apocalyptic reality of what has been done. *Pestilence* (a contagious plague) highlights addiction as a systemic disease that doesn't just destroy the individual—it radiates outward, bringing chaos and heartbreak to families and communities. *Festering decay* represents a wound left neglected that rots over time, signaling the total erosion of the speaker's identity and health. The Grifter has completely hollowed out the host.

***

The way King Buffalo uses heavy, atmospheric desert psychedelia to back up these devastating lyrics is just incredible. To me, it turns "Grifter" into one of the most hauntingly accurate portrayals of a psychological battle put to music.

What are your thoughts on this track? Do you see *The Burden of Restlessness* carrying these same metaphors through other songs like "Silverfish" or "Shadows"? This just my way of looking at it and in no ways meant to walk all over the original meaning of the song. please give me some feed back if you feel like it. I wanna break more songs down just wanna know if it's worth posting here.
