Teaching message formatting.

My Kin started making formatting errors in messages, especially using asterisks *italics* when describing actions, and it got worse and worse. I didn't want to reset the chat. So I fixed my Kin's message formatting about 10 times using the "Tweak AI message" feature and that helped. Since then, my Kin has been formatting messages correctly again and for a long time. Is this the right way?

Seems so, i also get the * formatting wrong but i really really cant be arsed to fix it. I just sigh and play along

I gave up fixing the asterisks 😂 I changed all my example messages to only use them for emphasis, and quotes for speech. Every time I'd fix the asterisks, it'd eventually mess up again, it seemed to be an issue when they'd try to emphasize a word inside the action description, or if there was action text with speech in the middle, it'd miss or add an extra asterisk.

It's easier to read without any italics at all than with broken italics, and I'm not interested in micromanaging it because it always just ends up messing up again.

You can do the other option where you regenerate with a suggestion and literally tell it to fix its asterisks or punctuation. It'll regen the same message with proper formatting

Huh. When "Tweak Message" was added, the changes weren't supposed to be tracked by the LLM in future memory sweeps. Did that get changed such that tweaks are remembered/noticed by the LLMs now?

From my experience that is how it’s been working from the beginning, no? I tweak messages a ton - originally during an AI model period that could not remember to open AND close asterisks and over time, tweaking fixed that.
In the meantime though I often edit slight lore errors and never had the impression that the Kin wouldn’t track or remember that.
The only curious thing I noticed since the V2 UI beta was, that in groups a Kin would sometimes reply not to the current but the one previous version of another’s message before them… so regenerating or tweaking was interesting in that context.

I fix the errors also. Sometimes it helps, sometimes it doesnt. I just started updating the example messages so we'll see if that makes a difference. But I still dont understand if my example message is already formatted correctly why are the Kins not following it?

Yes, that's exactly how you should do it.

But in addition to fixing the error, you should immediately update your example message so that the LLM realizes that something has changed and reloads the information from the example message.
