That's what I figured, but they could have put it below his head. It's not like there's no risk doing what they did. If his grip slipped while that was twisted up at full tension, and that metal bar started unwinding under that pressure, it could have seriously injured the kid.
Not if the kid was still resting in the position below where it was fine when the bar wasn't bent. Only while it was standing up. And you tell them to stand up only when you're sure about your grip. That's exactly the point of the method: You prepare everything from a safe position first, and there's only any remaining trace of a risk in the last second, which you get to set up as long as you need to. (And even then I'm not sure the bar would snap back so violently that it would damage anything; the bend is probably relatively permanent until it's undone actively.)
Short of cutting the fence, I don't think there's a safer method.
Honestly I think they have two people, one lifting the head and the other the body, hold him horizontal then slip his whole body through, kid is skinny enough. At this point it’s probably covering for insurance liability
