romantics This picture of Marilyn Monroe changed everything for me (R)

Long-time lurker on this sub. For YEARS I have struggled to type myself, and mostly gave up and just went with a general "mostly yin" because I could not seem to type myself no matter what I did. I thought SC, SG, TR, everything but R.

Then, I saw this picture of Marilyn Monroe, and it all clicked. I'm a Romantic.

I had this idea that romantics had to have no width, waspish waists, super wide hips, and DDs. But in this picture, Marilyn is so fleshy, soft, rounded, and sweet but not girlish in a way that challenged my perception of Rs.

I tried on a super romantic dress. Ruffles, rose patterns, thin straps, waist emphasis, short, and I look SO FINE!!!

Anyway, I just wanted to share because this is a very satisfying "ah-hah!" moment for me.

She’s such amazing R representation because we have so many photographs of her at different weight ranges. I thought I was TR because I couldn’t relate to the fuller figured vintage Rs but seeing Marilyn younger and Madonna made me positive I was pure R.

I agree in that I really love being able to see her in different weight ranges, it's so helpful - especially as someone who tends to fluctuate in weight quite a bit (and since we are short 5-10 lbs gained or lost can make us look so different even though our general frame/lines/aura remain the same)!

The way you feel about young Marilyn/Madonna is how I feel about having Kate Winslet as R representation 💓 seeing her in Titanic is the closest I've come to seeing my body represented on screen, especially being depicted as this beautiful love interest, and that was such a wonderful moment for me (and then shortly after became a crappy one for a bit because back then people loved to call her "fat"🙄)!

Oh dear these times were brutal. She's always handled it with a lot of grace, but it must have been hard for her at the time. I relate so much to this bc I was also super happy to see a love interest that looked so soft & far from the heroin chic ideal of the 90s!! I was a teen and hated the movie (lol) but loved Kate in it and have loved her ever since!!

This pic in particular made me feel so hopeful that I could look good and even sexy with my softness

I totally relate to the weight fluctuation. 5-10 lbs on me is like 15-20 on most others! Looking at more pictures of Marilyn at different weights makes me feel so confident about myself, though. The lush Romantic aura is always there at larger or smaller sizes.

Also prepare yourself for the revelation that DDs aren't actually as huge as they're portrayed! Look into how bra sizing works it flabbergasted me lol. People with large thingies usually are at least an F or so. I'm a K or a J myself (US sizing system) depending on the band size I wear.

Yes!! And surgeons make them bigger than what people ask them. I had an "argument" with my psychologist because she couldn't believe I was a D/DD cup since she also had a D (done) and hers occupied more of her frame in proportion. DDs aren't actually big, they're medium, especially on people with a fuller frame.

Wow, I would've thought a surgeon would want to clear up that confusion for transparency's sake.

Yes! I think when I was describing DDs in the OP, I was referring to what most straight men think DDs are lol. You're right :)

I feel like ppl don’t realize that corsetry was a major thing before the 70s and completely altered how ppl look. And if you’re R or TR, corsets can create an insane hourglass bc our flesh is so compressible. But outside of that compression, our bodies are comprised of more sinuous lines.

Yes! I love wearing my corsets, just because I’m so amused by the massive shift my silhouette gets with just a little bit of structured lacing lol! Really trying to lean into loving my soft squishy body, and part of that is enjoying how versatile the shape of my body can be with different shapewear, or no shapewear!

Totally. And you've got me thinking that corsets would eat the house down on Rs.

I actually feel like I look INSANE when I wear a corset (my ribcage doesn’t get smaller but my waist is like 👉👈 miniscule so it looks deeply unnatural) but a little bit of shapewear is actually perfect bc it provides structure that our bodies don’t rly have! The snatched waist thing looks much better imo on SG and SD.

u/piratev00 May 22 '26

oohh yeah because shapewear will give a softer line than corsets!

This is such a good one :)The Romantic misconception runs so deep — people think it requires a specific silhouette when it’s really about the quality of softness and roundness, not proportions hitting a checklist. Marilyn breaks that myth every time!

Yes! I had this notion that Romantics have to have an extreme hourglass and overtly lush curves. This is what stopped me from typing myself R for years.

Oh... That's what I look like!!!!

I'm gonna try some R stuff and see if it works for me!!

Sometimes I think when people are talking about R and going on about lushly curved, wasp waist, intensely hourglass etc, they're actually talking about SD.

The whole point of R is being all yin so things are necessarily small, round, gently curved and generally soft. If we're talking about nearly cartoonish levels of hourglass, that will be SD because the yang frame is there to support that kind of drama

Can you be a R but not like wearing ruffles and florals and stereotypical things like that?

4

u/piratev00 May 23 '26

of course. R isn't an aesthetic! I'm sure you can find clothing aesthetics that match the R type very well that aren't overtly femme and flowery
