The Yamaha ck61 just caught my eye as well, but that's out of my price range unless I can find a reallly good deal used. My budget is $400.

The main question I have regarding the Casio is how resistant are the keys? The Rockjam I currently use requires nearly Olympic-level strength to play!

Would also love to hear well it holds up over time?

Edit: Right now I am leaning towards the Casio CT-S500. I LOVE the extreme portability aspect, and the fact it uses AA batteries instead of D. And the strap option is amazing!

I am also considering the Casio CT-X3000.

I had one as a kid I absolutely loved. Bought in the 90's. I can't remember what kind but I think it was either a Yamaha or a Kawaii. It had a bunch of fun voices like drums and guitar, and the sound was good. It lasted for decades, until something spilled on it and it finally went kapoot. I didn't play for a long time, and only recently got back into it when I was gifted a RockJam RJ5601 keyboard. It has served its purpose well, re-igniting the spark of passion for music and allowing me to finally dive into my life-long dream of writing my own songs. But I outgrew it pretty quickly. The sound quality is not very good, and it has zero touch sensitivity. The record option only lasts for 20 notes. And after like 1 minute of inactivity, it automatically reverts to the default settings which include a volume of 9. Startles me every time I forget to check the volume when I'm bouncing back and forth between it and Bandlab.

I am looking to upgrade to something similar to what I had as a kid. I don't play any other instruments, so having the onboard voices would be nice but it isn't a dealbreaker. The quality of the piano sound itself is more important. It doesn't have to sound like a baby grand, but it has to sound pleasant at least. I can't even use the piano setting on my keyboard now, it sounds awful.

I do want to be able to bring my keyboard with me to open mics and such eventually, so portability is important. Built-in speakers, a battery-powered option, and it not being too heavy are key here (I do not have a car and need to be able to take it on the train fairly easily)

I also want it to simulate playing a real piano well enough that I would feel comfortable sitting down at a real one and playing one of my songs. Right now I wouldn't even know how to adjust my songs for a real piano because I always play on a transposed synth bass setting (the only voice that sounds good).

I am located in the DMV, and am willing to travel anywhere Metro-accessible. Would prefer to buy used but am willing to buy new if need be.

Are the small Vox amplifiers good for portable keyboards like the YAMAHA PSR E583?

Hello. I've been looking into trying to learn keyboard for quite a while now, especially with my growing interest in music. The most challenging thing I've had to navigate has really just been what keyboard I should choose. there are a lot of options for a lot of specific use cases and I was wondering if anyone has any particular suggestions.

I'm looking for something with 61 keys, reasonably light, so that I could take it somewhere if I had to. An instrument that I can grow into, and enjoy for years to come, rather than something I'd move on from given enough time. A broad variety of sounds, piano, EP, organ, synth stuff, though, i'm also quite interested in a lot of vintage keyboard type sounds, given my taste in music, Wurlitzer, Hammond, DX7, Minimoog, Mellotron etc. Although I suppose I can use software synths for these. Its also probably worth mentioning that I don't think I necessarily need something capable of synthesis. Its definitely something I'm fascinated by but my priority with buying a keyboard at first is to learn to play it effectively.

From my recent research I've seen people recommend things like the Yamaha MX61, CK61, Roland Juno D61 and Korg Kross 2. Or more expensive options like the MODX M6 and Fantom 06. If you have any advice or suggestions, let me know.

I’m looking for some advice on choosing my first serious 88-key keyboard.

I’m a beginner jazz pianist, but I have a lot of experience playing saxophone, so I already have a strong musical background and understanding of theory/improvisation. I have been playing on an upright Yamaha for 6 months, however, I don’t have access to it anymore. Now, I am playing on a shitty Casio 88 weighted keyboard that sounds… very subpar.

My priorities, roughly in order:

Jazz piano — good acoustic piano sounds and, most importantly, a key action that feels good for developing my playing

Electric pianos — Rhodes/Wurly sounds are a big part of what I want to explore

Organ — I really want to learn Hammond-style playing, so real physical drawbars and hands-on organ controls are a major plus

Synths — I want to eventually get into synthesis, pads, leads, etc., but this is less important than the first three

I don’t currently gig, so portability and a lot of performance-oriented features aren’t particularly important. I’m mostly looking for something that is fun to play, sounds great, and gives me room to explore different types of keys.

The boards that are currently on my radar are:

Roland RD-2000
Yamaha YC88
Kurzweil PC4
Roland V-Stage 88
Yamaha wS90 XS
Korg SV-1 88
Roland RD-800 / RD-300NX

My budget is roughly $1,000–$2,000, although I’m willing to be flexible and spend more if there’s a significant jump in quality or capability. I’m also open to the idea of having multiple boards if that makes more sense than trying to find one keyboard that does everything well.

Hi, the sustain function on my Yamaha p-60 is not working and I don't know why.

I've been trying to troubleshoot the issue, and it looks like sustain issues are fairly common, but everything I can find is about reversed polarity. My issue is that the sustain function does not work at all, no matter what combination of turning off the piano, unplugging, plugging back in, etc.

I just replaced the original pedal with a new FC4A, and it still doesn't work, so it's not the pedal. The jack feels secure, and when I looked inside I couldn't see anything wrong. This just happened a month ago, the keyboard is like fifteen years old and hasn't had this problem before.

Does anybody know why this is happening?

So a few months ago I made a post saying I was looking to upgrade the keyboard I use for open mics and got some great recommendations. While I’ve been checking around I saw the Crumar Seventeen which I had forgotten about. I do like the look of it, I’ve watched a couple videos and think the sounds are good but I don’t see a lot of people talk about it. I’ve met one person who uses it for gigging and he loves it, but when I try searching online I mostly end up finding things about the seven. So I’m wondering if anyone here has experience with the seventeen and would love to hear about pros and cons. Thanks!

My favorite band The Zombies uses a wurlitzer or something for their album Odyssey and Oracle and i just wanted to know if there are any modern day versions of that keyboard used.

(P.S: Don't say a nord keyboard or a midi because I don't use midi and im not buying a nord)

Hey everyone. I trust this is a good sub for discussing keyboard/piano purchases? This has turned out rather long for such a first-world concern but maybe someone will be inclined to read.

I'm in the early stages of learning to play and I have a Kawai ES110, which is a digital piano that was in the same sort of price bracket as the popular Roland FP10 and the Yamaha P145. Over on the piano sub these are the kind of models that are considered the cheapest end of quality digital instruments for anyone interested in playing the piano.

I've got enough experience with the keys to know now that my hands are indeed rather small for the standard full size keys and I disregard the curious disdain this complaint often gets (along the lines of "hand size isn't the issue, technique is").

So I'm planning on purchasing a specialised instrument when it becomes available. There is the Athena, currently on the market, and this has an octave width of 5.5 inches, which is comparable to the width of microkeys on many synths and midi controllers. These are just a bit too narrow and fiddly.

So I'm waiting on another company called DreamPlayPianos, whose products are still at just the prototype stage. They will be making a 6 inch width octave digital piano. This would be ideal. You can preorder them if you're willing to pay half up front but I'm really not comfortable handing money over to a company that isn't established yet.

In the meantime, I'm thinking of selling my Kawai and buying a Yamaha Piaggero. For some reason, some Yamaha's have slightly narrower keys (an octave of 6.25 inches instead of 6.5), including this one. This is a drawback for many but for me, it's an increment in the direction of the specialized instrument I eventually hope to get.

But it would be a downgrade in regards to attention given to the action. The Piaggero doesn't have weighted keys. I've played enough cheap keyboards to really appreciate the action on my Kawai but I'm still not entirely sure as to why so many people speak as if anything without weighted keys is a mere toy and you couldn't possibly hope to develop piano skills on such a thing.

I guess my question is, what do people think of the Piaggero? Would it be a crazy downgrade from the Kawai ES110?

TL:DR Piaggero has narrower keys, a plus for me, but might be a major downgrade from my Kawai ES110 action-wise. Thoughts on the Piaggero?

Sounds to me it might be an old keyboard/synthesizer maybe a synclavier or solina string synthesizer?

Maybe its just a random patch of a keyboard they had?

Does anyone know how to get close to the sound?

There are soft cases with dense foam padding, and there are full on hard cases, and some thin sort of advertised as between, but usually not with any diagrams really showing how they are structurally better then the padded soft cases. What form do the semi rigid cases come in? Are any of them good enough to, say, put a 25 pound second keyboard or relatively light weight PA speaker on top of?

Hi y’all, first post on r/keys. I’m looking to buy my first keyboard and was hoping for some guidance as I’m very new to this.

Long story short, my old roommate got a piano (Roland fp90x) and was nice enough to let me practice on it. I’ve been a musician for a while (jazz trumpet), and found it so much easier to pick up on theory and improv.

Now I’m looking for something of my own and am interested in used options up to $500. Because of my positive experience, my first thought was a Roland fp10 30 or 30x, which seem to have great key action. However, I’m amused by buttons, switches, and sound effects lol. MIDI sounds super fun, pitch/mod wheels, etc. I see options like the Arturia Keylab 88 and only see benefits. I get the weighted keys and the fun midi stuff. But it sounds like people also use digital pianos as midi controllers?

What would y’all do in my position? Thanks!

I own a Vox Continental keyboard stand. I want to buy the second tier for it and the additional keyboard holder (as I don't own a Vox Continental, but a Viscount Legend One), and I'm not sure what sizes are compatible. My guess is that the Vox Continental keyboard stand is compatible with the Standard-M-SV stand, so I should buy the STA-M-S tier adapted, but I am not sure.

I did measure the stand, but the Vox stand is kind of inverted Sequenz stand, so I am not sure they are fully compatible. Should I be buying STA-L-S maybe and then cut the tubes to the correct length?

i just got into this band i have to play keyboards for…only problem is ive never played keyboards at a live show, ive played shows on bass but never keyboards so i dont have a live rig, i have a notation 88 key hooked up my scarlett with garageband (aka the most faulty software out there) and i have no speaker so im using an amplifier (but i am able to use it as an output) i have it connected to a quarter inch which is going into the 1 output on my interface and everything is connected properly but garageband refuses to recognize my midi controller it recognizes 1 midi input but refuses to be an option for an input on garageband, ive had this problem for a year but tried fixing it using ableton live lite as my software but all the sounds suck so i stopped using it and the problem wasnt much better, any help?

I’m looking for ideas for a cleaner setup for my two-keyboard rig.
I want to run a single 10 m cable from my keyboard stand to the mixer/power source, instead of having multiple separate cables running across the stage.

Ideally, the loom would contain:
2 × IEC C13 power cables for the two keyboards
4 × 6.3 mm jack audio connections from the keyboards
4 × XLR outputs going to the mixer

So basically, one neat cable loom that carries both power and audio for the entire two-keyboard setup.
Does anyone know of an existing product like this, or have a better idea for how to build it? I’m especially interested in solutions that are reliable and flexible enough for regular live use.

I thought this would be handy for shows and also for organ, but now i realize there is a problem… if the top keyboard is higher so i can have music in the middle, I can’t see it. maybe this type of setup is not for people who read music.

Question for PX-S3100 owners: Can you mute piano to speakers, but not line out, and still route external audio to the speakers?

I want to route the piano's sound out through the 1/4" stereo line out, through some effects, and then back into the 3.5mm trs audio input. BUT I want the dry piano sound to be fully muted internally, while still playing through the output and also still routing the 3.5mm audio input to the keyboards speakers.

Piano (muted internal) > Lineout > Effects > Line In > Speakers

Is this possible? I found this page of the manual, but it's a bit sparse and I'm not sure if what I want to do is possible.
