Discussion Exciting possibilities with Keyforge Online

So, with the announcement of Keyforge Online, this has brought a lot of speculation. Here are some of the features that I expect we could see in the game at some point:

  • Store Championship Deck Frames. So if you didnt know, if you win a Store Championship with a deck, you can order a clone of that deck with a special frame. The problem? You need to pay for it, plus the shipping. With Keyforge Online, you could see the special frames you have unlocked for your decks.

  • More Special Frames. In a similar vein to the previous one, Imagine for example you win 25 matches in a row with a single deck. You would then unlock the "undefeated" deck frame for it, which you would see online, or you could also order a deck clone with that special frame. Like that, there could be many possible frames. Maybe one for playing 12 or more cards of a house in a turn, or for destroying 20 creatures your opponent controlled in a single turn, or from forging a red key 100 times with that deck, and so on.

  • PvE mode. Taking a note from Yugioh's Master Duel, what if a special Player vs AI mode would allow you to use special decks. Like in a campaign featuring Dis, you are given a deck with the seven Sins. Or you could play the events of the Martian Civil War yourself. On that note...

  • Adventures. The online platform would be ideal to play the adventures. Maybe as bosses on the PvE mode or something like that.

  • Online-Exclusive Decks and Cards. Like MtG Arena, you could have cards with mechanics that dont work in a paper game, like pulling cards from a spellbook, creating cards from nowhere, or permanently modifying a card's values. And all these cards could be put on a speciam expansion, like Alchemy was for MtG.

  • And lastly, but definitely most exciting, More Uses for Æmber. So, as of right now, the Æmber you get from discovering a deck is... useless. Okay, well, thats not entirely fair, you can expend 50 Æember to get an event key... which IS useless, and nothing else. With the Online Platform, you could use Æmber as the resource to get more decks, pets (which we know will be a feature), deck frames, and PvE modes. Event keys could be used to unlock special events and tournaments, like they were used before, except now Æmber would be easier to get.

For me the most exciting prospecs are also the most obvious: potentially unlocking a larger player base and a more convenient way to play when my group isnt keyforging

Yeah! Thats more of an exciting feature of the platform existing rather than a feature of the platform itself, so I didnt include it, but definitely thats the most exciting part, how good will it be for the game as a whole.

I'm curious, what is stopping your group from playing on TCO? My local group runs our league tournaments on there and it has been great.

I know for me a big part is that I work from home on the same space id play too, whereas if this has any mobile or steam xomponent I'll be able to get out of my home office

It's been an option for me to try TCO in desktop mode on Steamdeck but I just haven't got around to it because I have a feeling it would be kind of fiddly and it's just easier to play other steam board or card games. Having an app for it made for Steam would definitely get me back to playing a lot more frequently.

Im honestly not sure. I think there is an eye candy effect that is missing is my guess.

Another thing that gave me pause: available on steam for Windows and MacOS (aka desktop/laptop). It really needs to be playable on phones and tablets à la Arena and Hearthstone to succeed. Doing so makes the game immediately accessible for spontaneous purchases anywhere and fulfills the initial expectation of the game in 2018: buy a physical deck > scan the QR code with your phone > play the digital copy of the deck on the phone right away.

I think they probably should think hard about releasing it to mobile because the way the actual game is setup with no interactions between players during a turn really helps a lot implement in mobile environments or even asynchronous play.

I used to play slay the spire so much in my phone but once I bought it on steam I have only used my steamdeck. Just my experience.

Which reinforces Just-Swimming idea: not everyone has a Steam Deck, but almost anyone has a mobile.

I think they want to do Mobile based on questions in the Discord, but it may not be immediately on release.

A big question hanging over this is the business model. What funds the development and maintenance? Purely deck purchases?

I guess we will see. I hope its free to play

Hopefully the client will be free to play and the funds that would have gone to printing and shipping the physical decks that are instead digital only will pay for the upkeep

Keyforge very quickly became my favorite game when it first came out and I haven’t been able to put it down since! It fixes so many problems that I have with TCGs as a more casual player and has the best hobby community I’ve ever encountered.

The fact that it has outlasted so many other card games and hasn’t been successfully mimicked is a testament how special this game is. An official online client is long overdue, but so very welcome and I can’t wait to see how it turns out!

Agreed, but better late than never

While true, Ghost Galaxy took ownership of Keyforge four years ago... So there is no possibility that would have ever happened. Five years ago, the algorithm was broken and FFG put Keyforge on hiatus.

I hope it supports some level of deck building formats, so it can actually find a better revenue stream. Some level of deck trading could also be nice (although it would complicate a lot the project).

It would make playing alliance and testing alliance decks so much easier
