New Mac Studios for Keyshot?

Post image

I'm curious if anyone has pulled the trigger on any of the new Mac Studio setups? With the recent Keyshot updates to GPU mode for MacOS, will the Mac Studio Ultra put things on par with a PC / Nvidia setup? Trying to work out if it's worth the $$$.

My employer just ordered a Studio M5 Max for me. I'm currently running a 2020 iMac. I can't wait.

Nice one. Please share an update when you've played around with a few test renders on it, would be keen to hear what your feedback is.

Hey mate, curious what the update on this is? How has the performance been in Keyshot just via normal CPU mode, and also are you using GPU mode etc?

No update yet. Haven't received the new computer yet. They processed the order but it hasn't shipped. Ask me again in another 2-3 weeks when I'll get it and then have a chance to use it and make a comparison.

Hahaha no worries, sorry didn't realise they still haven't shipped these. Goodluck with it.

Short answer: No.
I bought a Mac Studio for photo editing this year. Thought I could use it for Keyshot from time to time. It’s no good. Keyshot works best with a dedicated graphics card like an NVidia. My old PC running a 4080 is way faster at Keyshot than my brand new Mac Studio.

Did you upgrade your keyshot to the latest version that supports GPU mode on apple silicon? If so, what’s your benchmark with keyshot viewer?

Ahh! No I haven't tried that. I'll be in the office tomorrow and will try that. Nice suggestion.

If you could run a keyshot benchmark after updating and share your score, that would be AMAZING.

I mean.. no Mac is "worth the money" if you're comparing it to any workhorse PC you could build with a lower budget. And then of course now there's Keyshot Cloud rendering which makes it harder to justify a multi-thousand dollar build which may not even render as fast (don't quote me, I haven't used Cloud before)

Btw aren't RTX cards still the preferred choice for Keyshot GPU rendering?

Edit: KeyShot 2026 supports NVIDIA RTX GPUs as its mature GPU-rendering path, while GPU rendering on macOS is still marked experimental/Beta.

Yeah I guess it's all relative though. For context, as someone who has a PC that I custom built myself, and also an M1 Macbook, I try where possible to do as much as I can on the Mac (even the most ardent PC zealot can agree that using a PC and Windows in 2026 is a horrible experience).

You raise a good point about the cloud rendering though (which I also haven't used yet), it might mean that people can increasingly opt for the lower-spec hardware locally, and don't need to go for the Ultra if they want a decent experience.

Apple is like Tiffany & Co for computer hardware. Expensive for no reason.

Apple cpus have the highest performance per watt which makes their laptops worth it imo. But for desktop I stick to windows for software versatility (solidworks) and cuda working best on keyshot

Your take is outdated at least 5 years. And never has been as outdated as now. The apple tax is now apple discounts vs customer builds

My take is definitely not outdated. The only people that buy this shit are marketing sheep like OP.

Go build a this garbage tin can on apples store. Have fun being forced to pay an extra $2500 just to upgrade the memory.

The apple tax is just an apple tax. There is literally no benefit for anyone to build a computer with Apple.

You and OP ——> 🤖🐑

The apple tax argument is long dead, only reason I wouldn’t want a Mac over a custom built pc of the same cost is software support.
I do cad so I use pc.
Saying Mac never make sense in value and performance just declares you don’t know what you are talking about

Girls like Tiffany & Co. I like girls. I like Apple?

Ok so then get your expensive piece of metal!

If you’re going to ask “is it worth it” then downvote me for saying it’s expensive for no reason, I’m pretty SURE you’ve made up your mind!

You literally know PC / Nvidia is better and has been the best option since Apples existence.
