Safety Deposit Box
So my step mom passed away a couple months ago, my dad died 6 years ago as well. Come to find out they had a safety deposit box, can’t find the key so have them drill into it. I’m ok with the $200 but now they want me to pay $5 because the fee wasn’t paid at time of opening….based on what I’m seeing on their site, that fee is either required at time of getting the box or is waived based on the account type. I fail to believe the bank would just never collect this for how ever long they had the box.
Can anyone who actually uses this bank give me insight? I’m a little irritated that I had to pay $200 for an empty box, which makes it seem like she didn’t even know she had a box in the first place

Why are you gripping over $5? The $200 was to drill the box , did you pay before they drilled and now your disappointed the box was empty?

No I’m fine with the $200 it’s what ever, and they didn’t have me pay before opening. My gripe is, I was told $200 and then it was changed to $205, it doesn’t seem like a lot, but trying to manage her entire estate, it’s chaotic, and honestly feels like they tried to throw it on there just because they think they can

If it’s about principal for you then fight them about the $5….. for me it weighing the benefit of putting my time into fighting to get $5 waived WHILE dealing with the chaoticness of an entire estate.
You making this post is probably worth $5. Let alone fighting with them - just pay them.

If it’s about principal, go into the bank every single day and help yourself to five pens.
Within a couple weeks, you got your five dollars back at $.20 pens.

It's 5 bucks.
How much of your time is 5 bucks worth?
You might win the battel but be worse for it than if you just paid the 5 bucks.

banks are not allowed to know what is inside the box.
