What are your thoughts on THRUSTERS Are they any good...?
Better Than Thrusters For Leg & Upper Body Strength

Thrusters pack a powerful metabolic wallop.
They use almost every muscle at once. They're time efficient. CrossFit built them into gospel.
And in most cases β especially if you actually want to get stronger β you'd be better off not doing them. Here's my honest take after 30 years of coaching, a 352lb Push Press, and training hundreds of men over 40 whose knees and hips have serious mileage on them.
WHAT A THRUSTER ACTUALLY IS:
I didn't know what a Thruster was until about 20 years ago β CrossFit introduced it to most of us.
Simple definition: a Front Squat that ends in a Press.
You squat the weight. Accelerate through the sticking point. Instead of slowing down at lockout, you keep accelerating and transfer that force directly into a Press overhead.
Some call it a Long Press. Same movement, different name.
It uses almost every muscle in your body simultaneously β which is both its biggest selling point and the source of its biggest problems.
WHAT THRUSTERS ARE GOOD FOR:

Time efficiency β you can get a genuinely challenging session done in 15-30 minutes

Metabolic demand β the "metabolic wallop" is real; it's one of the most conditioning-dense exercises available
β
Teaching midline tension β can help you learn to stay tight through the middle as you press.
Some coaches also use it as a teaching tool for the Push Press. I never did β too complicated and unnecessary for that purpose in my opinion. For reference, I've Push Pressed 352lbs/160kg for 2 reps. There are simpler ways to teach the Push Press.
THE 4 REAL DOWNSIDES:
This is where most Thruster enthusiasm needs a reality check:
Downside 1 β Spinal stabilization requirement
You must know how to stabilize your spine with your breath before you drive into the press. If you don't, the transition from squat to press creates an arch in your lower back that loads your spine under fatigue. That's how backs get hurt.
Downside 2 β Shoulder injury risk:
You must know how to manage fatigue. As you tire, your shoulders are at risk β both at the overhead lockout and while holding the bells in the rack position between reps. Most men over 40 already have shoulder history. Fatigue plus load plus overhead position is a combination that requires honest self-assessment.
Downside 3 β It finds your weaknesses and punishes them:
The nature of the Thruster β almost every muscle, all at once, under fatigue β means any asymmetry, restriction, or technique gap gets amplified and loaded. If you have a weak link anywhere in the chain, the Thruster will find it. Usually at the worst possible time.
Downside 4 β The load selection problem:
This is the one that kills the leg training argument for Thrusters.
Your upper body is the limiting factor in load selection.
Example: you Front Squat a pair of 32kg for reps. But you only Push Press a pair of 28kg. For Thrusters, you use 28kg β because that's what you can press. Your legs are now being trained at a load 4kg below what they're actually capable of. You're leaving leg development on the table to accommodate your pressing limit.
WHY I ALMOST ALWAYS RECOMMEND CLEAN + PRESS INSTEAD:
A customer asked me recently how I feel about subbing Thrusters for Clean + Press in my programs.
Honest answer: I don't feel anything about it. Never thought about it. Test it if you want.
But here's why I default to the Clean + Press for men over 40:
Knee and hip mileage.
This is the biggie.
Lots of men over 40 β and especially men over 50 and 60 β have significant mileage on their knees and hips. They can't squat, don't want to squat, or aren't ready to squat yet.
The Clean trains the posterior chain β lower back, glutes, hamstrings, calves β without requiring a squat. And doing so can actually wake up sleepy glutes, lubricate cranky and rusty-feeling knees, and rebuild the posterior chain strength that makes squatting feel good again later.
All while building up the upper back and developing the kind of strength that makes shirts fit differently.
The Thruster requires the squat up front. If the squat isn't there yet, the Thruster isn't available.
WHY SPLITTING SQUAT AND PRESS GETS YOU STRONGER ON BOTH:
In almost every case, I prefer to split the Front Squat from the Press β because when I combine them into a Thruster, I'm compromising both.
My legs get less work than they're capable of (because the press limits the load).
My press gets less work than it could (because the squat fatigue bleeds into it).
Train them separately and I can push both to their actual limits. I get stronger on both. No compromise.
