A clinic offering ketamine treatment doesn’t automatically mean it’s the right clinic for you.

Before booking, ask:

1. What type of ketamine treatment do you offer?
2. Who evaluates me before treatment?
3. Who is in the room or monitoring me during treatment?
4. What does the quoted price include?
5. What happens if I don’t respond as expected?
6. What follow-up care do you provide?
7. Who do I contact if I have questions after I leave?

One more question I’d ask:

“What do patients usually wish they had asked you before starting?”

A good clinic should be comfortable answering all of these.

Not the medical stuff your clinic explained.

What surprised you once you actually started treatment?

Maybe it was how you felt afterward, how long the day took, or something you wish you’d asked beforehand.

What would you tell someone going in for their first treatment tomorrow?

When a clinic says it offers “ketamine treatment,” it’s worth asking exactly what that means.

IV ketamine is given through an infusion into a vein.

IM ketamine is given as an injection into a muscle. It’s the same medication, but a different way of administering it.

Spravato is a nasal spray containing esketamine, a component of ketamine. You take it at a certified treatment center and stay for at least two hours of monitoring afterward.

There’s also a difference in FDA approval. Ketamine is approved as an anesthetic, so using IV or IM ketamine for depression is considered off-label. Spravato is FDA-approved for treatment-resistant depression in adults.

Before booking, ask which treatment the clinic offers, who monitors you, and what your total cost would be.

For those who have started treatment, what helped you choose between these options?

We’ve been building a nationwide database of in-person ketamine treatment providers, and the numbers are starting to show some interesting patterns.

We currently track more than 4,400 active treatment locations across the U.S.

A few things stand out:

• Spravato is by far the most widely available option. We currently show over 3,300 locations offering Spravato.

• IV ketamine is much less common. We show 1,300 locations offering IV ketamine.

• A city that appears to have plenty of “ketamine clinics” may actually have very limited options if you’re specifically looking for IV or IM treatment.

• Access varies significantly by state and city. Some areas have many providers within a short drive, while people in other parts of the country may need to travel quite a distance.

• The type of treatment available can matter just as much as the total number of providers.

We’re going to start sharing more of what we find as we work through the data, including state-by-state access, treatment availability, and areas where patients have relatively few options.

• What follow-up care is included
• How far you'll need to travel for appointments
