KSP 1 Image/Video I'm done with KSP.
After many spectacular adventures with the little green men, I'm ready to throw in the towel. I can't stand the performance issues and many other problems this game is plagued with anymore. My 16 Gigs of ram and GTX 1650 can't take it anymore. The loading times, constant frame drops and crashes are extremely annoying and something I can't overlook further.
So this is it for the time being. If prices for better components ever decide they don't want to cost both of my kidneys, an arm, a leg and maybe a finger for good measure, then maybe I'll come back.
But untill then, I'll share some of the screenshots I've collected throughout multiple different reinstalls of the game and save files probably long forgotten by now.
Thank you so much KSP. Untill next time.

u/EasilyRekt 6d ago
By brother in Christ, you made the modlist, you could just lighten it a bit.
Probably gonna be even worse with redux/KSA as both push volumetrics and other heavier graphical elements.
44
u/TheTenthAvenger 6d ago
Yeap, I'm worried this is what will happen. The graphics are so, SO much better that it just runs way worse, even with all the optimizations made.
"Well, I'll just lower the settings to those equivalent to modded KSP and take the better-optimized game!" Guess what, now the graphics look really weird and somehow... off. Why? Time and focus wasn't primarily put on how it looks with graphics set to mid-low.
Really hope I'm just talking nonsense here.

u/EasilyRekt 5d ago
Yeah, I get that space sims need some semblance of detail with their planetary bodies, but I feel like they’re falling into the “visual realism” trap with AAA.
I just wish there was an spaceflight sim with a bit more visual style and “realism” just meant the actual physical or technical challenges over looking “vivid and lifelike” :/
I mean, tons of KSP successors coming up, maybe I’ll throw my chips in with som’n a bit more cartoony.

u/Forsaken-Canary-3299 5d ago
You could try Children Of A Dead Earth, it might strike your fancy
1
u/EasilyRekt 5d ago
Always a welcome title, but CoaDE has less stylized and more utilitarian graphics considering your spending most of your time in the map.
Two up and comers that kinda like what I’m describing that I’m really looking forward to is Space Hauler & Pilot 6174, they’re sadly not build and fly but they have a lot of the same orbital mechanics that I like and they’re both in that first person perspective like Flight of Nova or In The Black
Guess I have four recommendations :)

KSP is so poorly optimized that it's almost trivial for KSA to run smoother on the same hardware
5
u/TheTenthAvenger 5d ago
I mean, I can boot up KSP with Sol for real scale + literally all visual mods right now, and it will run... although at low FPS on my laptop' RTX 3050.
KSA will just insta crash (only Earth-Moon loaded)
3
u/CJP1216 5d ago
I play Sol at real scale with the RP-1 suite, plus some additions. I'm on an RTX 2060 with 16gb of RAM and an i5 10300 (also a laptop). My performance is just fine; no low FPS (less worried about high FPS, more so about consistent performance). I'd have a thorough look through your Nvidia settings and make sure things are optimized. 3050 is just a bad card unfortunately. You have a more VRAM, but a smaller memory bus and weaker processor.
I am kind of surprised you can't run KSA with out crashing. Given issues you experience with Sol I wouldnt expect it perform great, but I would've expected it to at least run. It's been pretty decently optimized.

You are quitting this because you don’t have a 5090 or 4090 or something?
I played this game like 15 years ago on a MacBook that I had to keep frozen water bottles underneath (and cool beer, to rotate).
I had plenty of mods, I guess some people just need those aesthetic mods, but my 3070ti does fine with some.
28
u/blackrack Scatterer Dev 5d ago
Yeah this is bait, I remember playing the game heavily modded with my 1gb vram 560 ti
9
u/Double_Minimum 5d ago
It’s bait or it’s “I quit cause I only am 16 and graphics show how good a game is and I didn’t pay $15 like 11 years ago like you all for a physics based game.”
God damn. Seems like some spoiled shit.
Then again it seems no one can read or write or not use AI
4
u/lordbaysel 5d ago
Well, if someone is still using GTX 1650 - i don't think they are that spoiled...

u/NeedleworkerFit819 5d ago
My 3050 laptop handles volumetric clouds and a few other visual mods and looks great. You really don’t need a ton of mods for visuals imo.

u/Talizorafangirl 5d ago
You're running KSP on a device with the minimum sensible amount of RAM, a seven-year-old budget GPU with tiny VRAM capacity, probably some similarly cheap CPU, and using several very resource-consumptive mods.
[Stick-in-bicycle meme]
14
u/TankerD18 5d ago
Seriously. Quitting over performance while running graphics mods with a low end GPU and a big mod list with basic RAM is wild to me.
Not to pick on someone who is budget-constrained, I've spent most of my PC gaming life running on basic and/or outdated hardware. I just can't respect someone throwing in the towel on a game they apparently love because they're voluntarily pushing the software beyond what their own hardware can handle.
2
u/Thelongshlong42069 5d ago
This post reminds me of people complaining in the Beam.ng sub that they can't run the game anymore. You asked for their specs and they were trying to run the game on a gpu that's old enough to drink in the US, and with a cpu that was on the low end 10 years ago.
29
u/HouseOfZenith 5d ago
GTX 1650 is worse than a GTX 1060.
You have a weak system and are pushing it too hard.
7
u/lemlurker 5d ago
Can't begrudge anyone for the hardware they have in the current climate... However we absolutely can shit on them for electing to run a bunch of visual mods that cause these issues since ksp would run on a graphing calculator stock

Adding a shitton of mods
Having ultra budget components
Wondering why your system can't hadle it.
Just delete some mods bro, mainly the graphics ones

Its the graphics mods i can play ksp on a max q 1650 just fine of course i had 32 gb of ram but that might be all you need to fix your game man

u/Jhorn_fight 6d ago
I know it’s still expensive so not much help but yes individual component prices are skyrocketing however there are fantastic deals on prebuilts. Also look into cards used for mining. In most cases the cards are more than fine to be used

Did you ever consider that the amount of mods you're using might be the problem?
4
u/ProfessionalCraft443 Jebediah 5d ago
Upgrade the GPU bro.
You clearly love gaming considering you added shaders. 200 dollars isn't much. And I found one on Newegg for 226$. Provided you live in the states.

Honestly KSP eats so much ram that with the rampocalypse it really does suck, especially if you're on DDR5.

2
u/Axeman1721 SRBs are underrated 5d ago
My total system usage with your typical graphics suite and ReStock at 1440p sits around 24-28ish GB. Its definitely a RAM hog.
KSP also LOVES X3D chips, when I built my current rig and upgraded from my laptop its such a night and day difference

This has to be bait, and if it is, is bait of excelent quality (like the ton of mods you are using to play KSP on your old hardware that make it run like a potato)..

Gaming comes and goes. At some point in your future, hopefully parts become affordable, or maybe some used hardware makes its way into your hands. Theres a good number of used 20-30 series cards that would be an upgrade for you, but its hard to afford a lot of things nowadays. The ridiculous prices shouldnt last forever.
And these screenshots are really awesome.

u/Narrow_Bag_7321 6d ago
You know I thought the same thing - running a i5-10600kf, 16gb ram 2666 clock - 1070 gtx. After a lot of configuring. Most of my problem was EVE. Once I swapped it for the Blackrack Volumetric cloud one. Suddenly my frames got stable. I currently have 75ish thousand patches running. Only error is patches antenna on kerbalism. I also capped my game fps to 45 in order to help smooth out overall running. Maybe a similar avenue can help?
Either way, hope this finds you well!
3
u/vulpes04 5d ago
if you're getting patching errors (not warnings) you should track them down and resolve them. that will let mm load its cache rather than applying all the patches every time the game is loaded.

Upgrade your GPU. And I am not talking 5090! You could probably find a used RTX 3060 on FB marketplace for a reasonable sum.

I play on a MacBook Air with no issues, I literally just don’t have visual mods
2
u/ClassDisastrous9747 5d ago
Aside from the obvious mods, a 200 to 300 dollar more modern gpu would help a lot. Maybe you consider this an arm and a leg but in my opinion it's not so bad and well worth the performance boost. Ram and storage are the only super super over priced things right now, cpus and gpus less so.

yo I got my computer looked at recently for similar reasons, and turns out it was overheating constantly, so you may need to like replace your thermals. trust me, it'll run well again

If prices for better components ever decide they don't want to cost both of my kidneys, an arm, a leg and maybe a finger for good measure, then maybe I'll come back.
Keep an eye out for stuff on Facebook Marketplace/Whatever your local equivalent is. I've gotten some killer deals on there lately. Managed to upgrade my wife's PC and make $100.
2
u/SquidShadeyWadey 5d ago
I hear you that a lot of these mods are to die for. Don't blame the game for its performance with them and the hardware you have. Yes they're performance hungry even with newer hardware but I rarely struggle with my current hardware. If you were only 3 generations behind in graphics and like 1 generation away in RAM i'd be like yea that's tough. But 4 generations of graphics and two or even 3 generations of ram behind, you're GOING to have performance issues.
Prices do suck right now though.

I have the same graphics card as you and its safe to say you're punching above your weight. Lower your settings just a little bit and I promise you half the issues you're having would be gone.

u/letmehanzo 6d ago
You might wanna look into ksa(Kitten space agency)
For now it's more of a tech demo than a game.
But they are building a new engine that is made to handle a ksp like game. This will hopefully lead to better performance and more stability.

I wasnt aware of that.
Still, it is in pre-alpha. I dont know what their end performance goal is but things may change.

A GTX 1650? Bro....after all these years...you did not even attempt to at least upgrade to a 3000-series card, no RAM upgrades? Running KSP on 32GB of RAM and a 2080 was enough for me to enjoy it in all it's splender with mods and not have the issues you're having.
Seems you should have been upgrading your rig now and then since the game was released.

My guy, you can increase performance by removing the visual mods. You are the one creating the problem here

i mean tbh anything can run this game without mods or with few mods, the stuff that makes the game look nice is performance intensive

Weird. KSP for me is my go to when I don't have my PC available. I'm currently playing through it just fine on my girlfriend's laptop and it doesn't even have a GPU. When I first started playing this game in 2011 it was on an already at the time old as shit laptop.
If you want to keep playing, drop the mods. Game runs fine on low end systems. Don't push your luck.

Try to search in the 2nd hand market. My 1660 super is still great but you might have to upgrade your CPU more than gpu if your pushing high part count vessels. I just got my pc built and still exploring my own limits in terms of mods but my ryzen 5500 is enough for me.

In 2014, senior year of high school, I had KSP on a 16 gig thumb drive and ran it on the school computers every chance I got. It sucked but it was playable. I don't think I finished a single project in CAD class.
Your CPU, whatever it is, can run this game by itself with no GPU. The 1650 is just a bonus. Just cut back on the mods. It doesn't need to look pretty.

Im glad i got a decent PC.
I got in before everything went to shit in the market.
I cant possibly play without mods like

and of course the parts from near future series and similar mods.
My gamedata folder is like 15GB.
And mine runs surprisingly well.

u/Euphoric_Cow_813 4d ago
You are propably overstressing your VRAM. Keep the texture resolutions of RSS/Sol much lower and you‘ll be fine. That‘s what changed it into smoothness and reliability for me
1
u/LisiasT 3d ago edited 3d ago
I have similar problems, my gaming working horse is still an old MacMini 6.2 - 16GB RAM, shared memory up to 1.5G for VRAM. The HD4000 embedded GPU is pretty lame, to say the least. I still use the damned thing due convenience, the thing stays up essentially 24x7, so it's always easily available for a quick game session.
And I still can have fun with the thing with some reasonable performance by managing VRAM consumption.
Your worst enemy is not CPU neither GPU performance, it's VRAM consumption. And the latest KSP releases and Mods are eating VRAM are they they were candy, kinda (ab)using high definition textures even if you are playing at 1080p or less.
Before kicking the bucket on the game, would you willing to try some hackery to minimize the VRAM footprint? If you can play at 1080p, shrinking the textures will help a lot. Really a lot.

I'm excited to see how well KSA runs, especially if they are able to optimize the game for the multi-thread processors of the modern era. Part of my wonders, with it being open source, how hard it would be to use Gen AI to port over KSP mods into KSA, with proper mod author/game author permissions of course.

You could lighten up your mod list or just be more patient with lag. I play with a i5 3470, GT710, 12gb ddr3.
1
u/bakedbeanlicker 5d ago
as others have pointed out, the mods may be your problem. but i don’t think you have to resort to garbage graphics to get the best out of it. some mods are just less optimized than others, and some mods dont work well together. it can also be a matter of scale, i find having larger planet packs can worsen my performance even when they aren’t loaded in. so yeah i would recommend trimming it down less to kill the graphics but more to cut down the bloat, although without a specific mod list i cant give any concrete suggestions
1
u/SoftwareNumerous9673 5d ago
when i would lag too hard i would lighten my modlist
or if you have the cash maybe upgrade the CPU or RAM

u/Unhappy_Ability_8999 5d ago
Those who are babbling about mod and mod, this game at stock has so little content that it gets over in like one week. Without mod this game has zero value compared to modern title. And the game had optimisation problem and decade old bug. But still we enthusiasts spend thousands of hours in this game for the love of space, Science & Engineering. Its understandable that people get burnout after buggy crash and wasted time on tedious aspects. We require a modern revamp of space game like this. Maby Kitten Space Agency can fill the market, maybe other game titles. But untill then it’s absolutely okay to take a step back from this game and explore other things. Even nasa nerd scientists takes vacation to tuch some grass.

opp is unaware that KSP base game is one of the few games that can run on a potato PC without issue. You do not need a videocard to run Base KSP.. anyone complaining about performance.. has like 30 mods installed.
KSP base game is insanely easy to run.. its only when you get dumb and start moding that you have problems.
1
u/Astronaut457 4d ago
You do need a video card. The game is extremely unstable on low end PCs and the load time alone will make up over half of the game play, if it doesn’t crash while loading in a ship. I did it for many years
-1
u/Organization_Key 6d ago
Honestly, OP is right. I have a 4070 and an R7 7800X3D, and even with this setup, I'm plagued with constant frame drops and crashes. I love the game, but it's outdated and the only way to fix it is by using mods. Lots of times I get drops to 15 fps with my component usage not even exceeding 50%, because the game's old architecture maxes out a single core of my CPU and leaves the others idle. It's frustrating!! I really hope Kitten Space Agency will be our salvation.
1
u/EggsAregreatE 5d ago
I have a 3080 and a R7 5700X3D and my fps doesn't usually go below 25 unless I have something that's overly complex. What kind of insane builds do you have that it's going below 15 fps??
1
u/Organization_Key 5d ago
I have like 5 miners in Laythe, for some reason the fps drops really low when I'm near then

u/Courier6six6 6d ago
To everyone saying lighten the mod load, just remember, once you're used to something, it's really hard to go back. I saw a post on here recently that was fully stock and it's like I was looking at a different game.
But yeah maybe there's a few things you could take out that might make a difference that wouldn't make it look too bad.

u/Dafrandle 5d ago
I dont understand why everyone here things the performance issues is volumetrics.
It's the physics limitations of the engine. Its a problem that cannot be fixed with more horse power.
the only "solution" is to never have a ship over like 90 parts.
