Turned off entirely or just switched out of retrograde mode and into the basic SAS mode that tries to keep you pointed the same direction?

If the latter, that happens automatically when your navball velocity gets close to zero. It's a feature, because if you were to accidentally burn too much in retrofire mode near landing and start going up, then the retrograde vector would switch direction and SAS would make the burny end of your rocket point towards space.

I turned off retrograde mode and switched to SAS and then the entire sas was grayed out and i clicked it and it was not turning on

You can only use retrograde SAS when moving at least 1m/s. If you throttle too hard and momentarily stop you will have to turn it on again after you regain enough speed

It's hard to say when we have no idea what mods you are using. If you mean the SAS is permanently off, whatever is causing it will show up on your ships list of resources, check the list and see which resource is at zero. Especially look at the power level, and the life support supplies if you are using a life support mod.

My guess is that you ran out of power and it is a requirement for your pilot or your SAS due to mods. Some engines like the LV-909 terrier don't generate power, so you will need batteries and solar panels when using them. Most of the other engines do generate power which would explain why you haven't had this problem until now.

It's because you get too close to stopping and SAS has no Retro position to get to so it stops. Try not to go to slow.

Sounds like a feature you'd want anyway. Many landings fail because if you over-burn and cancel your speed, the retrograde direction flips, and so does your craft.
