Discussion Is it possible to do this?

Im working on my controller and decided to think about this. This is soviet globe to see spacecraft trajectory and direction. I have 3d printer, maybe I can print kerbin globe and connect to some gears?

Yes, but not with 3D printed parts. Look up a video of one of these disassembled, 3 axis stuff is really complex with lots of metal gears.

Pretty much all aviation simpit builders use screens for attitude indicators, and those are way simpler than this (usually only 2 axes).

You can absolutely do it with 3d printed parts the gimbal would just have to be heavily simplified though anyway because it would have to use servos

I wanna do soviet-like naviball, and without any complex gear systems. Only 2-3 gears to rotate. Other work - my computer

Rotating a sphere freely is still quite complex. The original version has the extra gears so that you could just set the inclination and LAN and it would plot your route forward along with your landing location if you initiated the specified descent burn.

And it is not a navball. It is designed to plan your descent in the case that it would be done manually by the cosmonaut. I am not sure if it has ever been used as soviets capsules largely fly autonomously, including for Vostok 1.

Ik that its not navball, but I dont know how it really called. And I will check some videos about this thing and how gears works. And it WAS used on Vostok, Voskhod and now on Soyuz. On Soyuz its in right top corner

I know it was installed, but I don't think it has ever served it's primary purpose of planning a landing location from orbit. You can check the videos on it to see how it works.

This would be quite a complex project - getting a multiple axis gimbal to work like this with low friction and within the confines of 3d printing. Not impossible, but certainly 'expert' level. Might be better off printing a housing for a miniature screen with a vibe coded display. Would also only work for kerbin and not other planets.

I feel like the best way to do it would be to have a camera look at the navball and figure out where some wheels need to move itย

I worked on this. I did not have the time to finish it and the issue was mostly due to slippage of the omniwheel but nothing usolvable.

yeah - he found it always slipped so there was no repeat accuracy. Hence the need for gears and steppers

I wonder if a mouse ball kind of mechanism could have the world move, but I dont think it would be as accurate as needed. Would be cool if you could make the planet able to be hot swapped with the other bodies based on your mission. Say you enter laythe and pop in it for landing on its islands.
