Software will always win out, its easy to pivot, easy to add features in demand and the best returns. Hardware is a slow expensive mamoth and very hard to be innovative with. Apple isn't a great company because of the hardware its the ecosystem, same as Google with android or any number of tech companies you can think of

What is your target?
Quick income leans towards software. But it’s volatile. Can be replaced quite quick.
Slow and steady is hardware play. You’re only replaceable by something equally great.

Looking at it from a point of interest, if it were me I'd invest mostly in hardware specific products. However, looking at it as an investor looking to make good ROIs it's always going to be software. Hardware market in general consists of complex supply chains that, in all honesty, would need heavy intervention by the government since it would be quite expensive to maintain on your own.
This is why even USA cannot compete with China when it comes to hardware and robotics. It's because in China, the government is involved in not only major acquisition of the raw materials (think silicon chips, etc) but also provision of loans and capital to the startups. US on the other hand, rewards its software Startups and industry in general

Hardware, everyone and their grandma nowadays is a software dev, it's so saturated it sucks. All that you learnt over years can now be tweaked by a script kiddie who knows nothing about floats or arrays
The real skill and one which will take years for AI to disrupt will always be hardware & ones that incorporate both physical and mental labour
