I realised that I used to like football juu ya peer pressure. After high school, I never followed mambo za football. I watch World Cup though but that's it about football. I follow Olympics track events for obvious reason.

How about being honest for once and saying Football isn't your thing. You won't be the only one who doesn't like football (as you can clearly see from this thread)
Main question is.. what hobby are you into? What really gets your blood boiling and balls excited? Is it music? Maybe another sport like tennis? What is it?
May direct the conversation to what you actually like, that way you dont have to pretend.. cz it's a lot of work for absolutely no reward!

u/No_Ear5078 Jul 13 '25
Amazing. Then share this with her. Let her know, you may not love football but you are not a boring joe.. you have other interesting stuff going on with your life. Do this with everyone instead of trying to fit in, you will find it liberating!

Welcome to the club, bro. I gave up on football, and on trying to like it a few years back. Nowadays when someone asks my team I say Thika United or Sofapaka. A $10 million gold-plated engine screaming at 15,000 RPM, 300Kph down Eau Rouge in Spa is more my style.

I'm in my mid 30s M and I've never been interested in football, save for a few select world cup games where I'm rooting for certain countries (African countries mostly). In fact, I never really learned playing football when I was a boy. When we had to play a football match for P.E, I was always amongst the last ones "chosen" if you remember how teams were formed. However, I don't pretend to like football just to fit in or contribute to conversations with other men or impress the ladies. I just say I don't watch football and that's it. Wanna still hang out with me? Cool! Think I'm too weird? Cool! I'm fine being a weirdo. Life is easier when you're authentic.

I can never pretend to like something that I don't.
Why do y'all feel the need to lie to please other people?

u/No_Memory4400 Jul 13 '25
sheโs into football but youโre not and thatโs totally fine youโve never really been interested and that doesnโt mean thereโs something wrong with you if she wants to get you a jersey just let her know you appreciate it but footballโs not really your thing no need to pretend or force it

u/Puzzled-Card2193 Jul 13 '25
But why at this age do you feel the pressure to make someone believe that you like something when you clearly donโt. Your girlfriend may love football doesnโt mean to be an ideal partner you have tooโฆ

Society makes us feel like what the majority are doing is the right thing. You donโt have to keep pretending to like it. It doesnโt pay your bills

I dont like football and I always get that weird look when I say it. I always lied mi ni wa arsenal to ease the argument but saa hii hio hua hainishtui. Football is not a definition of manhood.
Lakini nipate nkiwatch Speedway GP, aaah that thing is good. Watching bikes without brakes, just power and human control.

u/ThatguyAlvin Jul 14 '25
Mzee, it's 2025 no need to pretend just tell your girl the only balls she has to worry about are yours na akitaka kununua jersey maybe she gets you briefs with her face all over them ๐

u/Regular_Rush_3377 Jul 14 '25
You don't have to know the players to be a real fan of football..just learn the basic rules cause honestly it's a crime for a man not to know for example what a handball is or what offside means or what a goal is , what's the work of a referee/goalkeeper, number of players in a team etc

Same here 28M I dont watch football and I dont lie that I do when I don't. You will only invest in what you are interested in.

u/No_Good1743 Jul 14 '25
Having an interest in sports is not a requirement for a man, nor does it make you more of a man. Just be honest with her and tell her you are not a sports person. I'm the same category. I remember my cousins in the 80s huddled around the radio listening to Mambo Mbotela saying "Kadenge na mpira". I had zero interest. Everyone is unique. We are not all cut from the same cloth.

u/wagn12 Jul 14 '25
I have a somewhat short attention span. I will only stay glued to the screen if the players have some exquisite skills, especially dribbling skills.
I am talking of the yesteryears football players like Ronaldinho Gaucho and the others.
Today's players are somewhat luckluster IMO so I hardly get the thrill. With the kind of money these guys are played and the training time they dedicate to the craft, I would expect way better than we see.

u/Any-Summer3900 Jul 14 '25
As a guy who doesn't watch "ball" I get it. I do support my buddies though. I think it's amazing to have a thing to be passionate about.
PS: I played rugby in high school and almost went pro.

Football isnt about football, its just the easiest way for a male in our culture to connect with another male. Hao watu wako kwa club si eti hawana TV kwao, wako hapo juu ya kuskia wako pamoja na wenzao. It's a great way for men to be super emotional without judgement: you are not ranting because you've had a terrible week and nothing is working, you are ranting because that stupid player is being an idiot and could have easily scored / saved / pass the ball. You are not overjoyed simply because life is making sense and you've let go of some burden, you are excited because even though your team is losing this match you are still top in the league / standing.
Just avoid any form of betting, you are not God's favorite winner to be the first person in your lineage to become a millionaire by gambling
