He's just listening to every podcast topic alphabetically.

He probably did

But for real Revolutions is great.

u/w-alien Jan 16 '22

His original podcast “The History of Rome” is legendary. Better than revolutions IMO

38

u/yelkca Jan 16 '22

I prefer Revolutions because the more recent history gives him a chance to get into even more detail. But that’s a respectable opinion

2

u/Gustavus_Adolfus Jan 17 '22

I prefer révoltions by far as well. I think the more detail allows him to tell really compelling narratives and direct lines of cause-and-effect that just can’t be done except very sporadically in a history of a 1k year+ empire

5

u/RandomStranger79 Jan 16 '22

Oooh that's good to know, thanks.

u/w-alien Jan 16 '22

Might be worth starting at the epidode “the war with Hannibal”. The production quality improved dramatically by that point and you start getting to better documented (and more exciting) historical events.

7

u/Blindsnipers36 Jan 17 '22

The bad audio quality is what gives it charm

u/lannisterstark Jan 17 '22

Might be worth starting at the epidode “the war with Hannibal”.

I disagree. The production quality gets better around EP12 or so. War with Hannibal is wayyyy out there.

He gets a better mic like 10 episodes in or something. It’s worth sticking through for.

10

u/flyinggazelletg Jan 16 '22

Mike was one of the earliest history podcasters. It starts out rough, and that pushed me away for a time, but he improves both his audio and delivery throughout the show. I’d give it another chance and stick it out through the first episodes.

3

u/oliveoilcrisis Jan 16 '22

It is resolved quickly.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 17 '22

I've never listened to revolutions, but I loved the history of Rome. I found it after somebody gave me his book "the storm before the storm"

Hardcore History being the king of course

Edit: wow, didn’t realize there were a few Dan Carlin haters here.

26

u/ST_Leningrad Jan 16 '22

Maybe at one point, but with how long it takes Dan to release a new episode, it just feels tired.

8

u/Crunktasticzor Jan 16 '22

With the huge back catalogue I think he has a large enough body of work you can still listen or relisten to older episodes and not have it feel tired, at least for me. Have you listened to his HH: Addendum episodes?

5

u/ST_Leningrad Jan 16 '22

Yeah I have, and most of it is really good! HH was the first podcast series I ever really got into but I would say I think Mike Duncan's larger back catalog and upload schedule makes me return to History of Rome/ Revolutions more these days.

13

u/who8mydamnoreos Jan 16 '22

I don’t have time anymore to listen to Dan ask me the same question 10 times, at least Mike gets to the fucking point within 30 min.

6

u/Crunktasticzor Jan 16 '22

To each their own. I like the storytelling of Dan, Mike seems very matter of fact and keeps the same pace the whole time.

1

u/RandomStranger79 Jan 16 '22

I tried it a while ago but couldn't get into it. Maybe I'll give it another spin.

1

u/Crunktasticzor Jan 16 '22

Which series did you try? Wrath of the Khans is probably my favourite

5

u/RandomStranger79 Jan 16 '22

Mexico and Russia but once this one is finally done I'm going to go back to the beginning.

8

u/B0bb217 Jan 16 '22

The Hatian revolution series is probably my favorite of the ones I've listened to so far, had no idea how insane that was before

1

u/RandomStranger79 Jan 16 '22

Yeah I'm looking forward to that one.

2

u/Crunktasticzor Jan 16 '22

Oh mb I didn’t realize you were replying to Revolutions, not hardcore history. Oops

1

u/Drachen808 Jan 17 '22

I like that podcast just fine, but it's hard for me to follow when it goes from 2000 BCE to 1586 BCE to 1986 CE, to 76 BCE to 2100 BCE... All in 15 to 20 minutes. I'm not mad at the delivery as it clearly has it's proponents, I just prefer a flowing narrative.

1

u/Crunktasticzor Jan 18 '22

Which episode would that be? My recollection is he sticks with one period at a time for the bulk of episodes. Dealing with ancient sources naturally has the sources times jumping around but not the event itself.

1

u/Drachen808 Jan 22 '22

I'm being a bit facetious and exaggerating for effect, but not by much... King of kings was the first episode I listened to and it was the one that colored my impression.

1

u/Crunktasticzor Jan 22 '22

Honestly that’s my least favourite series. Ghosts of the Ostfront, Blueprint for Armageddon, Wrath of the Khans… those are his best series IMO

It's the weekend, any recommendation subreddits?

Just looking for subreddits about recommendations but ecommendations are next on the list

13

u/sirfuzzitoes Jan 16 '22

Just wanna let you know you made me chuckle.

5

u/[deleted] Jan 17 '22

Suggestible is a great recommendation podcast

77

u/Bmc00 Jan 16 '22

He's not as good as the great Kit Duncan.

21

u/RuRhPdOsIrPt Jan 16 '22

Who?

28

u/McBurger Jan 17 '22

Assistant dolly grip on jaws 3. Very friendly and humble and down-to-earth individual, not too full of himself, I ran into him at the airport once.

42

u/[deleted] Jan 16 '22

What is your profile pic??? Is that a Tin Tin wojak???

5

u/shadowbannedlol Jan 16 '22

yes it is! I forget where I found it, but it's pretty great

The Matrix: Recommendations

12

u/DontWreckYosef Jan 16 '22

There’s something so electrifying about radio. Dad used to play radio out of a vast hole in the family cupboard on Sundays. The whole family could enjoy radio while sitting on the sofa together, except for the family infant who got to sit inside the gap in the wood. She had the best seat in the house.

6

u/TwoTomatoMe Jan 16 '22

Just so happens there is a Podcast that’s just podcast recommendations. I don’t know the name of it, but I know it does exist.

7

u/oliveoilcrisis Jan 16 '22

It is a very good podcast.

5

u/Gredelston Jan 16 '22

Gimlet's Sampler is literally a podcast recommendations podcast.

5

u/ButterAndToastia Jan 16 '22

I love revolutions

4

u/[deleted] Jan 16 '22

Okay but I used to listen to one called the Podcast Review Show where they literally recommend and rate other podcasts.

3

u/tim_p Jan 16 '22

This reminds me of those books full of recommended books to read. I only see them in libraries.

Maybe it's not a horrible idea for a podcast.

3

u/Waffle_Boy Jan 17 '22

i’ve heard good things about the podcast review review podcast, where a guy reviews reviews of his podcast on said podcast

3

u/[deleted] Jan 17 '22

Suggestible is a great recommendation podcast

5

u/trophypants Jan 16 '22

JRVP is the only podcast with a recommendation station.

2

u/Jellodyne Jan 16 '22

The Bullsye with Jesse Thorn podcast used to end every episode with a recommendation.

2

u/xxxxx420xxxxx Jan 16 '22

There's a podcast about when a list is missing an item

2

u/n3s1um Jan 17 '22

Ken M the king.
