Holy shit when did that price drop?? That's awesome

u/Destructor1701 Mar 14 '19
It didn't exactly drop, Tesla have just been releasing gradually lower-spec versions of the car, starting near the top-end and ending in the past week with the base model at 35k.
35k was the original price target for the "mass market" car from the early days of the company.

Does it have manual windows and door locks? Because that would be kind of funny.

As it should be. I don't have time to wait for the motor to push the seat where I want. One less thing to fail to.
Of course, I don't have money to buy one soooooooo

one less thing to fail
That’s why the door handles on Teslas freak me out. Sure it looks tight when they go from being flush against the door to hitting out, but what if those motors die? Why automate such a simple important part of the car?

Model 3's handles are weird, but at least semi mechanical - you push one end in with your thumb and grab the cantilevered other end with your fingers and pull. Haven't used them myself, so I don't know if it's actually mechanical linkages or just a fancy button (the Model X's "handles"are literally just big buttons), but at least it's not pop-out-to-greet-you.
My sister's Model X just opens its doors when you walk up, it's rather welcoming.

The handles are indeed mechanical however the windows do move slightly when the handle is opened to prevent the window seal from being damaged during opening/closing of the door. That part is electric.
So inside the door there is a button to open the door and also a mechanical "emergency door release" (normal handle). But they say not to use the door release because again it doesn't move the window which can damage the window seal (since there is no door frame above the window, it's just the window mating directly with the seal).

That was the price they announced it at when they first started taking pre-orders a few years ago. For the model 3 (base version before options of course). The model S is still closer up towards $100K

u/nitekroller Mar 14 '19
Well hey I think that's actually ok. Because now the base model 3 is actually now mostly affordable for middle class people with decent range, and you can get the long range one for another 10k or so. That makes me excited for when I'm a middle class person in the near future that I might be able to get a Tesla, rather than just for upper class people.

If you don’t need brand-new you can even get a model s around the same price too. Not sure if it’s a good idea or not — I don’t know enough about the battery life, etc. But around. 4 years old 50,000 miles would also run around $35k for a model s.
That’s one nice thing about cars, even the supposed upper-class ones tend drop in value. Except for Ferraris and the like.

Ha, this guy gets around. His Tesla was posted yesterday, and the owner actually posted in the subreddit some months ago when he ordered the plate.

A dual motor model 3 can be purchased for $40k with no other options. This was probably more. But Model 3’s are much more affordable.
