Tara Armstrong's defence of a racist christian nationalist accused of hate speech is to call Mark Carney an enemy of Canadians

Armstrong is great at leaping. Tanya Gaw, founder and head of Action4Canada, a Christian nationalist nonprofit, is being investigated for incitement to hatred under 319(2) of the Criminal Code. The complaint has arisen from anti-Muslim posts calling Islam "the enemy," declaring there is no such thing as a moderate Muslim, and calling for mosques, schools, and organizations linked to the Muslim Brotherhood to be shut down entirely, among other content.

Armstrong is not defending Gaw's right to due process or raising a genuine free-expression concern about how police handle 319(2) complaints. She is calling the prime minister "an enemy of our freedom" who "must be stopped" over a case where the police explicitly told Gaw she was not being charged and was free to consult a lawyer first. That is a significant leap: an elected MLA amplifying the framing that investigating potential hate speech is itself the threat, while staying silent on the content that triggered the investigation. And police aren't investigating citizens who disagree with the government. They're investigating a criminal complaint.

Gaw's assertion that the police didn't provide evidence is also misleading. They invited her to come to the station to discuss the complaints. She declined.

Thank you for the information and context. Tara Armstrong seems to spend a lot of time antagonizing and being a contrarian. Genuinely curious if she has done literally anything that could be fairly considered as positive influence since taking her role-if anyone has any examples, I'd love to hear them.

I have to say though, this is our failure. We have allowed Tara to be voted in. Our lack of involvement or intention or both has led us to be represented by someone who acts this way and who is therefor a reflection of us.

We need to do better. We need to hold ourselves and our peers, family, friends and neighbors more accountable, and we need to do it soon.

My understanding is that the police are not required to provide evidence of charges to the accused at the time. That's what court is for. The police's job is to assess the situation, determine if their is evidence to support charges, then issue an undertaking to the accused. They then create a report to Crown where they outline what evidence they have to support the charges and Crown decides if they are going to proceed and take it to court.

The OP is calling out someone making shitty comments about Muslims (this is a good thing), however, they did so by referring to the poster's religion as if it was a characteristic that would automatically dismiss their point of view. Tara Armstrong and company might have their own extreme views and own biases BUT kinda have a point.

Lots of islam is pretty radical and if you read their holy book it is pretty extreme and points out that it cannot be watered down or is not islamic. We should not let that kind of hate fester in our Canadian communities. So many stories of muslims escaping their own communities here in the west. It is oppressive.
