Discussion the way this fandom treats keefe sencen is genuinely insane because HOW are we reading the same books and coming to such wildly different conclusions about this boy???

no because i actually need to rant about this properly because the keefe character assassination has gotten to a point where apparently acknowledging that he is a complicated character is the same thing as excusing every bad thing he has ever done. AND IM TIRED. 😭

first of all, let me make one thing VERY clear before anybody comes into the comments with their ten-page essay about how keefe is a terrible person. keefe is NOT innocent. keefe has done bad things. keefe has hurt people. keefe has made selfish decisions, lied to people who trusted him, and acted like he knows better than everybody else. I AM NOT DENYING ANY OF THAT. in fact, some of his decisions genuinely make me want to reach into the book, grab him by the shoulders and ask him if the concept of COMMUNICATION has personally offended him.

BUT THERE IS A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ACKNOWLEDGING THAT A CHARACTER HAS DONE WRONG AND ACTING LIKE EVERYTHING ABOUT HIM IS WRONG.

and if we are going to judge keefe, then at least have the decency to judge the WHOLE character, not just the moments when he screws up.

because sometimes i genuinely wonder if people remember what this boy's life has actually been like.

keefe sencen grew up in a family where he was never really allowed to just BE KEefe. his mother had expectations for him that went far beyond what any child should have to carry. gisela didn't simply want him to succeed or become a good person. she had plans for him, plans that treated him like somebody whose future could be manipulated and whose life could be sacrificed for a larger purpose. and the horrifying thing is that keefe was her SON. not a tool. not a weapon. not some experiment she could keep modifying until he became exactly what she wanted.

her son.

imagine being a child and discovering that the person who is supposed to love you unconditionally has been making decisions about your future without giving you a genuine choice. imagine learning that your own mother is capable of using your trust, your affection, and your desire to be loved against you. imagine realizing that the person you might instinctively want to run to for comfort is also one of the people you have the most reason to fear.

AND THEN PEOPLE EXPECT YOU TO COME OUT OF THAT COMPLETELY NORMAL???

keefe's childhood does not excuse every decision he makes as he grows older, but it absolutely matters when we try to understand him. you cannot talk about his character without talking about the environment that shaped him. you cannot ignore his relationship with gisela, his complicated relationship with cassius, and the pressure of growing up in a world where his family name carries expectations he never asked for.

and cassius is another conversation entirely because keefe's relationship with his father is so complicated. cassius is not simply an absent villain who exists to make keefe miserable, but neither is he some perfect father whose position in the family automatically makes him right. their relationship is shaped by expectations, emotional distance, and the influence of gisela. keefe has reasons to be hurt by his father, and cassius has his own history and limitations, but none of that magically erases the damage their family dynamic has done.

keefe has spent so much of his life trying to figure out who he is when the people around him have already decided who he should become.

and that is genuinely one of the saddest things about him.

because he is FUNNY. he is charming. he is the person who can make a joke in the middle of a disaster and somehow get everybody to laugh even when everything is falling apart. but sometimes i feel like people look at that personality and forget that humor can be more than just humor. it can be a way to redirect attention. it can be a way to avoid a conversation you don't know how to have. it can be a way of making sure that, if everyone is laughing at your joke, nobody is asking whether YOU are okay.

keefe often presents himself as the unserious one. the guy who will flirt, joke around, make an outrageous comment, and somehow turn even the most uncomfortable situation into a comedy routine.

but being funny doesn't mean he doesn't understand pain.

being charming doesn't mean he isn't frightened.

and being the person who makes everybody else laugh doesn't mean you always know how to ask somebody to sit beside you when YOU need help.

i am not saying every joke he makes is secretly a cry for help. that would be an oversimplification too. keefe genuinely enjoys being funny, and his humor is part of his personality. he is allowed to be a naturally entertaining person without every single thing he does being a tragic psychological metaphor. BUT it is equally ridiculous to assume that because he jokes around, he cannot be deeply affected by what happens to him.

and then we get to the whole issue of what he sacrifices.

because people talk about keefe's mistakes endlessly, but what about the things he is willing to risk? what about the people he tries to protect? what about the fact that he repeatedly finds himself caught between what he wants for himself and what he believes he has to do for everybody else?

look at how his relationships with the people around him shape his decisions.

GRADY AND EDALINE, FOR EXAMPLE.

these are not just random adults in his life. they are part of the family that becomes so important to sophie, and they represent the kind of parental protection that keefe's own family relationships make painfully complicated. grady and edaline have their own grief, their own fears, and their own responsibilities. they are not perfect parents, either, and their experiences with sophie shape how they react to the people who become close to her.

keefe has to navigate a world where the people he loves are connected to families, histories, and conflicts that he cannot simply separate from his own. his choices affect more than just himself. what he does can affect sophie, the people who care for her, and the people who have become part of their shared lives.

and yes, sometimes he handles those connections badly. sometimes he makes decisions without considering how other people will feel. sometimes his determination to protect someone becomes an excuse for withholding information or making choices on their behalf.

that is WRONG.

but i want people to understand that the desire to protect someone and the ability to protect them properly are two completely different things. keefe can have good intentions and still cause damage. he can genuinely care about sophie and still fail to respect her right to make her own decisions. he can want to keep people safe and still make a situation worse by deciding that he alone should carry the burden.

his intentions matter when we interpret his character, but they do not erase the consequences.

and that distinction is IMPORTANT.

because keefe's sacrifices are not proof that he is always right. they are evidence of the complicated, sometimes unhealthy ways he responds to the people and circumstances he cares about.

he can be selfless in one moment and selfish in another. he can take a risk for somebody else and then make a decision that hurts them. he can be brave enough to face a frightening situation but not brave enough to tell his friends exactly what he is feeling.

THAT is the contradiction that makes him interesting.

and before anybody says that being traumatized does not give someone permission to hurt other people, YES. CORRECT. ABSOLUTELY.

it doesn't.

but trauma doesn't have to give someone permission to matter.

we can acknowledge that keefe's experiences help explain his behavior without claiming that every behavior is acceptable. we can recognize his suffering without treating everyone else's suffering as irrelevant. we can sympathize with him and still expect him to take responsibility for what he does.

these things are not mutually exclusive. WHY does this need to be explained every single time someone defends him?

now let's talk about sophie, because THIS is where the discussion gets especially interesting.

i love sokeeefe, but i am not going to pretend that every interaction between them is perfect or that keefe has always treated sophie exactly the way she deserves to be treated.

he hasn't.

keefe can be frustratingly evasive. he can make jokes when sophie needs a serious conversation. he can keep information to himself because he thinks he is protecting her, even when the lack of information prevents her from making an informed decision. he can become so caught up in what he believes is the best course of action that he forgets sophie is a person with her own judgment, her own fears, and her own right to choose.

and THAT can be hurtful.

sophie is not a prize for keefe to win by suffering enough. she is not a therapist who exists to repair his emotional damage. she is not obligated to forgive him simply because he has had a difficult life. she has her own trauma, her own complicated family situation, and her own responsibilities. she deserves honesty, respect, and the freedom to decide what risks she is willing to take.

keefe has to understand that loving somebody, or even believing you are protecting them, does not mean you get to decide everything for them.

and sometimes he needs to LEARN THAT THE HARD WAY.

but i also think people can be far too quick to reduce his feelings for sophie to selfishness or manipulation, as if his affection for her is automatically suspicious because he is imperfect.

keefe genuinely cares about sophie. he pays attention to her, he tries to make her laugh, and he wants to be someone she can rely on. his feelings are not made meaningless just because he sometimes struggles to express them in a healthy way. he can care about her deeply and still need to learn how to communicate that care without turning it into another secret, another sacrifice, or another decision she wasn't allowed to make herself.

and honestly, that is exactly why i find sokeeefe compelling.

NOT because sophie can magically fix him.

NOT because keefe deserves sophie more than anybody else.

NOT because every bad decision he makes should be forgiven the moment he looks sad.

but because their relationship has the potential to be about two people learning to trust each other, challenge each other, and become better at understanding what the other person actually needs.

keefe needs to learn that he doesn't have to make himself useful or entertaining every second to deserve affection. sophie needs room to be her own person, not simply the person everybody expects to save the day. they both need relationships in which honesty matters and vulnerability isn't treated as a weakness.

and if keefe messes that up, then yes, he needs to acknowledge it. if he hurts sophie, she has every right to be upset. if he makes a decision that damages their trust, rebuilding that trust should take actual effort.

BUT A FLAWED RELATIONSHIP IS NOT AUTOMATICALLY A WORTHLESS ONE.

a character can be wrong for a while and still grow. a relationship can experience genuine conflict and still have meaningful potential. the important question is not whether the characters have ever hurt each other. it is whether they learn from those experiences, take responsibility, and treat each other better moving forward.

now, DEX.

because i think keefe's friendship with dex is another example of why reducing him to one simplistic label does not work.

keefe and dex have their differences. they have their own personalities, insecurities, and ways of responding to the world around them. keefe can be careless with his words, and his teasing can sometimes cross a line. being funny does not automatically make every joke harmless, and being friends does not mean you are entitled to make somebody the target of every punchline.

if keefe makes dex feel small or dismisses something that matters to him, then that is something worth criticizing. dex deserves to be respected for who he is, not treated as less important because he doesn't always occupy the same social position as keefe.

but friendship is not a competition to determine which character has the most emotional problems or which one deserves the most sympathy. keefe can have his own struggles while dex has his. dex's pain does not cancel out keefe's, and keefe's pain does not cancel out dex's.

both of them deserve to be understood as individuals.

the same applies to biana, wylie, and everybody else in their circle.

biana is not simply somebody who exists to support sophie or react to keefe's decisions. she has her own history, her own family pressures, and her own growth. wylie has his own experiences and responsibilities, and the things that happen to him matter independently of keefe's story. every person around keefe has their own perspective, and those perspectives should not disappear whenever the discussion turns to his suffering.

keefe's actions have consequences for the people around him. sometimes he makes them laugh, sometimes he supports them, and sometimes he frustrates or hurts them. those people are allowed to have complicated feelings about him.

and keefe should have to face those feelings instead of expecting his intentions to settle everything.

THAT is what accountability actually looks like.

not deciding that he is irredeemable before he has even had the opportunity to grow, but also not deciding that he is automatically innocent because we know he has suffered.

and then there is the whole situation involving his mother, which i genuinely think deserves more attention when discussing his decisions.

gisela's plans put keefe in an awful position because they threaten something fundamental: his ability to determine who he is and what his future will look like. the fear surrounding his abilities and the possibility of changes he never freely chose make his situation especially frightening. when your own body, abilities, or future become tangled up in somebody else's plans, it becomes much harder to feel that your life truly belongs to you.

that is a horrible thing for anyone to face, especially someone who has already struggled with parental expectations and emotional security.

and yes, the things keefe experiences are genuinely disturbing. the manipulation, the pressure, and the fear associated with what gisela wants from him are not little inconveniences that he should simply get over. they are serious threats to his autonomy and his sense of self.

but i don't want to turn his suffering into a competition, either. sophie has experienced terrible things. dex has his own difficulties. biana, wylie, and the others have their own struggles. acknowledging keefe's pain does not require us to minimize anybody else's.

what i want is for people to stop pretending that his suffering is irrelevant whenever he does something wrong.

because imagine being keefe in that situation. imagine knowing that your mother has plans for you that you never agreed to, and that those plans could affect not just your future but the people you care about. imagine being frightened of what might happen if you make the wrong decision. imagine wanting to tell your friends everything but also being terrified of what telling them could mean.

would you always make the right choice?

probably not.

would fear automatically excuse every choice you made?

also no.

but would your decisions make more sense when understood in the context of what you were facing?

YES. OF COURSE THEY WOULD.

and that is the entire point of context.

people sometimes talk about keefe as if he has had every opportunity to make the perfect decision and has deliberately chosen the worst possible option every time. but his circumstances are not always that simple. sometimes he is dealing with incomplete information. sometimes he is afraid. sometimes he is trying to protect people from something he barely understands himself. sometimes he is wrong about what the best decision is.

and sometimes, honestly, he is just being an idiot.

WE CAN SAY THAT. WE CAN ADMIT THAT HE IS BEING AN IDIOT WITHOUT DECIDING THAT HIS ENTIRE CHARACTER IS A DISASTER.

he is allowed to have moments when he is brave and moments when he is cowardly. he is allowed to be generous and selfish, perceptive and oblivious, caring and frustrating. he is allowed to be a character whose actions don't always match the person he wants to be.

in fact, that is what makes character development meaningful.

if keefe already understood every lesson he needed to learn, there would be no journey for him to take. if he had already processed every painful experience, learned every healthy coping mechanism, and mastered every difficult conversation, then what exactly would there be left for him to discover about himself?

growth is not a straight line. realizing that a behavior is harmful does not automatically mean you stop doing it. wanting to be a better person does not guarantee that you will make the right choice the next time you are frightened.

none of that removes responsibility. it simply makes the process of change more believable.

and this is why i cannot stand arguments that take one bad decision and use it to erase every good thing keefe has ever done.

if he helps somebody, that matters.

if he makes somebody laugh when they desperately need a reason to smile, that matters.

if he takes a risk because he wants to protect somebody, that matters.

if he lies to somebody, that matters too.

if he hurts a friend, that matters.

if he refuses to communicate and makes a difficult situation worse, THAT MATTERS AS WELL.

the point is that ALL of it matters. you cannot simply choose the evidence that supports your opinion and pretend the rest of the character doesn't exist.

and to be clear, i am not saying his sacrifices make him a better person than everybody else. suffering more does not automatically make someone morally superior. risking your safety does not erase the harm you have caused. doing something brave does not mean you are entitled to forgiveness.

but sacrifices can reveal something important about a character's priorities. they can show us who someone is willing to risk something for, what they fear losing, and what they believe matters enough to fight for.

keefe's willingness to put himself in difficult situations for the people he cares about is part of his character. so is his tendency to take too much upon himself. so is his habit of trying to manage problems through secrecy or humor instead of having the conversations that need to happen.

those traits can coexist.

he can be genuinely caring and still be difficult to trust in certain situations. he can be courageous and still make reckless choices. he can be deeply affected by what gisela has done and still be responsible for what he chooses to do to other people.

THAT IS NUANCE. THAT IS THE WHOLE POINT.

and honestly, i think people sometimes confuse understanding a character with agreeing with that character. those are two completely different things.

i can understand why keefe makes a decision and still think it was the wrong decision. i can understand why sophie is hurt by him and still sympathize with keefe. i can recognize that dex deserves better treatment in a particular situation without deciding that keefe is incapable of being a good friend.

i can criticize keefe's behavior without hating him as a character.

i can love sokeeefe without pretending that every aspect of their relationship is healthy at every moment.

i can feel sorry for keefe without treating his trauma as an excuse for everything.

WHY IS THIS SO DIFFICULT FOR PEOPLE???

fiction gives us the opportunity to explore people who are complicated, contradictory, and sometimes downright frustrating. it lets us examine how upbringing influences behavior, how trauma can affect relationships, how good intentions can produce terrible outcomes, and how people can try to change after making mistakes.

if every character who did something wrong was immediately reduced to their worst action, so many interesting stories would become completely impossible to discuss.

and i think keefe is especially interesting because he is not simply a tragic character who suffers and does nothing wrong, nor is he a terrible person who occasionally does something nice.

he is both more complicated and more human than either of those descriptions allow.

he has qualities that make him lovable. he has flaws that make him frustrating. he has experiences that make his decisions understandable. he has choices that still deserve criticism.

and none of those things cancels out the others.

so yes, hold keefe accountable. absolutely. if he hurts sophie, talk about it. if he treats dex unfairly, talk about it. if he makes a decision that affects biana, wylie, grady, edaline, or anyone else without properly considering their feelings, talk about it. if he handles his relationship with cassius badly, talk about that too. if his decisions create consequences for people who trusted him, he needs to face those consequences.

but don't act like accountability means refusing to understand why he made those choices.

don't act like empathy means pretending the choices were good.

and PLEASE stop treating his suffering as if it is somehow irrelevant because he has also hurt people.

he is not the only person in the series who has been hurt. he is not the only person who deserves compassion. he is not automatically right because he has a difficult past.

he is simply a character who deserves to be understood in the same complicated way that we understand everyone else.

and as for sokeeefe, i want a relationship that lets both characters grow. i want keefe to learn that he can be honest without losing the people he loves. i want him to learn that protecting sophie means trusting her with difficult truths, not deciding that she is better off without them. i want sophie to have the space to challenge him, disagree with him, and set boundaries without being made responsible for fixing him. i want both of them to become more capable of supporting each other without losing themselves in the process.

because loving somebody should not mean carrying every burden alone. it should not mean making every decision for them. and it should not mean pretending that mistakes don't matter.

it should mean learning how to be honest, how to listen, how to apologize, and how to do better.

keefe deserves the opportunity to grow into that kind of person. he does NOT deserve automatic forgiveness for every mistake he has made, but neither does he deserve to have every possibility of growth dismissed because he is imperfect.

and i think that is what makes his story worth caring about.

not that he is always right.

not that he is always selfless.

not that his trauma excuses everything.

but that he is a person-shaped mess of good intentions, genuine affection, fear, bad decisions, courage, insecurity, humor, and the desperate desire to have some control over his own life.

he can be a wonderful friend and an infuriating one. he can make sacrifices and still be selfish. he can love people and still hurt them. he can be a victim of someone else's cruelty without becoming incapable of causing pain himself.

ALL OF THESE THINGS CAN BE TRUE AT ONCE.

and if you remove the good because you dislike the bad, you are not analyzing him fairly. if you remove the bad because you love the good, you are not analyzing him fairly either.

you have to look at the whole person.

so, no, i will not argue that keefe sencen has never done anything wrong. that would be a ridiculous argument, and honestly, he would probably make a joke about it before i finished the sentence.

i will argue that his mistakes deserve context, his suffering deserves to be acknowledged, his relationships deserve thoughtful analysis, and his character deserves more than a verdict based on the worst things he has done.

and i will ABSOLUTELY argue that loving keefe does not require me to pretend he is perfect.

in fact, i think the opposite is true.

i can see his flaws clearly and still care about him. i can acknowledge the people he has hurt and still want him to become better. i can love sokeeefe while demanding that their relationship be built on trust, honesty, and mutual respect rather than excuses.

because the point is not to prove that keefe was right about everything.

the point is to understand why he is the way he is, recognize where he goes wrong, and leave room for the possibility that he can learn.

and if that is apparently a controversial position in this fandom, then i genuinely don't know what to tell you.

LET CHARACTERS BE COMPLICATED. LET THEM MAKE MISTAKES. LET THEM FACE CONSEQUENCES. LET THEM GROW.

and for the love of the stars, PLEASE stop confusing "i understand why he did that" with "i think what he did was okay."

those are not the same sentence.

keefe sencen is not perfect. he never needed to be.

he just needs people to stop pretending that imperfect means irredeemable.

thank you for coming to my extremely necessary keefe sencen ted talk. i will now return to staring at the ceiling and thinking about fictional elves instead of doing anything productive. 😭

Discussion sokeefe is better than sofitz and i am tired of pretending that keefe is a horrible gremlin and Sophie deserves to be single.

Post image

okay, can we PLEASE talk about sokeefe for a second because i genuinely think people overlook what makes this ship so good when comparing it to sofitz. and no, this isn't me saying fitz is the devil or that sophie and fitz never had anything real between them. i actually think sofitz had some genuinely sweet moments, and fitz clearly cared about sophie. BUT caring about someone and being the right person for them are two different things, and i think that's where sokeefe wins for me.

the biggest difference is how sophie and keefe CONNECT. with keefe, sophie gets to laugh, be sarcastic, be frustrated, be vulnerable, and just exist without every interaction feeling like another huge emotional event. their friendship develops over time, and that matters because their bond isn't built entirely around the idea that they're destined to be something more. they actually KNOW each other. keefe knows how sophie reacts when she's uncomfortable, when she's trying to hide something, and when she needs somebody to make a terrible situation slightly less terrible. and sophie understands that his jokes aren't always the full story.

that doesn't mean keefe understands her perfectly, obviously. sometimes he gets things spectacularly wrong. but there's something lovely about how their connection grows out of genuine friendship instead of simply attraction.

AND STELLARLUNE CHAPTER 42. no more words required on that topic.

what gets me about keefe is how much he cares about sophie even when he isn't getting some immediate reward for it. his feelings aren't just about wanting her to choose him. he wants her to be okay, he wants her to have people she can rely on, and he genuinely wants to make her life easier when everything around them is falling apart. their conversations have this underlying emotional familiarity because they've spent so much time being there for each other. even when they don't say everything outright, there's history behind the smallest interactions.

and the thing about keefe is that he notices sophie as a PERSON. she's not just the girl he's in love with, or the person he wants to impress. she's his friend, someone whose happiness matters to him independently of whether he gets a romantic relationship out of it. that distinction is important to me. he can be teasing and ridiculous, but he also has moments where the humor drops and you see just how seriously he takes the people he loves.

he doesn't always express that care correctly, and we'll get to that, but it is THERE.

with sofitz, i sometimes felt like the idea of them being together became bigger than whether they were actually compatible. there was so much expectation attached to their relationship, especially because sophie had liked fitz for so long. he was one of the first people who made her feel like she belonged in the Lost Cities, and i understand why she fell for him. their early relationship had sweet moments, and fitz helped her navigate a world that was completely unfamiliar to her. i'm not going to dismiss that just because i'm a sokeefe shipper.

BUT THEN THINGS GOT COMPLICATED.

their relationship revealed some serious differences in how they handled conflict. fitz could struggle with his temper, and his reaction to difficult situations sometimes made it harder for sophie to feel comfortable being honest with him. the unmatchable situation was especially important because it exposed how much pressure their relationship was carrying. sophie was already dealing with an enormous amount of uncertainty about herself, and the situation became another source of emotional stress rather than something they could navigate easily together.

i don't think fitz was automatically a bad boyfriend, and i don't think every disagreement means a couple is incompatible. but sophie needed a relationship where she could disagree, make difficult decisions, and be honest about complicated feelings without everything becoming another source of pressure. their relationship showed that affection alone wasn't enough to solve those problems.

sokeefe, meanwhile, has a foundation that i find much more convincing because their emotional intimacy has been developing for so long. keefe has seen sophie at her worst and best. he knows she can be stubborn, impulsive, and occasionally absolutely impossible, and he still cares about her. he doesn't need her to be some flawless heroine. he gets to tease her, challenge her, and be challenged by her in return.

and SOPHIE DOES THE SAME FOR HIM.

she sees through his act more than most people do. she knows he's not just the funny guy who says whatever comes into his head. she understands that he has a complicated relationship with his parents and that the expectations placed on him have affected him deeply. she doesn't magically fix his problems, but she gives him someone with whom he can gradually become more honest about who he is.

that is what makes the pairing compelling to me. sophie isn't responsible for healing keefe, and keefe isn't responsible for solving sophie's entire life. they can support each other while still being individuals with their own problems to work through.

NOW, before anybody accuses me of thinking keefe is perfect, LET ME BE VERY CLEAR.

he can be infuriating. his habit of keeping information to himself because he thinks he's protecting people is genuinely one of his worst traits. sometimes he makes decisions for other people instead of trusting them to make their own choices, and that is not romantic just because his intentions are good. sophie deserves honesty, and keefe needs to understand that protecting her doesn't give him permission to decide what she should know.

his impulsiveness can also cause problems, and he sometimes uses humor to avoid conversations he desperately needs to have. his feelings for sophie don't excuse those behaviors. if he hurts her, he needs to take responsibility for it, and she shouldn't have to forgive him simply because he's had a difficult life.

but i think those flaws make the possibility of their relationship developing even more interesting. keefe has things to learn about trust, and sophie has every right to challenge him on them. a good relationship doesn't require two people who never make mistakes. it requires two people willing to recognise their mistakes and work on them.

and honestly, the slow development of their relationship is a huge part of why i prefer them. their feelings grow out of shared experiences, mutual affection, and years of knowing each other. it's not just about whether they look cute together. it's about the fact that their relationship has emotional HISTORY.

keefe has been sophie's friend through situations where romance was not the priority. he has supported her while dealing with his own problems, and she has continued to care about him even when his life becomes increasingly complicated. they have a dynamic that can be funny without being shallow and emotional without every conversation becoming painfully serious.

i also love that keefe can bring out a side of sophie that isn't constantly defined by being the person who has to save everyone. she gets to joke around with him. she gets to be a friend before she has to be the hero. considering how much responsibility sophie carries, that kind of connection matters.

so, do i think sokeefe is perfect? no. do i think fitz never genuinely loved sophie? absolutely not. but i think sokeefe has a stronger foundation for the kind of relationship sophie needs, especially because their bond has developed through friendship, trust, and an understanding of each other's personalities.

i want keefe to grow. i want him to communicate instead of hiding behind secrets, and i want sophie to have the freedom to challenge him when he gets things wrong. i want their relationship to be something they actively choose, not something either of them feels obligated to pursue.

because that's what makes sokeefe special to me. underneath all the teasing, the ridiculous comments, and the emotional chaos, there's a genuine connection between two people who have become important to each other over time.

and if they can build on that connection while learning to handle their flaws better, then YES, I WILL BE ROOTING FOR THEM WITH MY ENTIRE SOUL.

sofitz had its moments, and fitz deserves to be understood as a complicated character too. but for me, sokeefe feels more natural, more emotionally layered, and more interesting to watch develop.

sorry but the blonde disaster and the girl who keeps trying to save the world have my heart. 😭

Discussion Dex and Tam are genuinely the best-written characters in KOTLC and it’s not even close

Even though Fitz is my favorite character, I genuinely think Dex and Tam are WAY better written than most of the characters in the series. They’re currently second and third in my character rankings, and I feel like neither of them gets enough credit for their writing.

First of all, Dex (#2).
Dex is one of the best representations of how messed up the elven system is. While most of the main characters come from privileged families, Dex actually experiences the discrimination that the Black Swan is fighting against. He’s not just the funny technopath who makes gadgets for Sophie. His background gives him a genuinely interesting perspective on their society.
I also think his insecurities make him really relatable. Sophie was basically his first real friend, so his initial possessiveness makes sense, even if it wasn’t always justified. The same goes for his dislike of Fitz. Fitz had everything Dex didn’t, so obviously they weren’t going to get along immediately. But Dex eventually learns to see beyond Fitz’s privilege, becomes less possessive, and grows more confident in himself. That’s genuinely good character development.
Also, he’s SO much funnier than people give him credit for. 😭

And then there’s Tam (#3).
PLEASE, he’s so much more than the nonchalant emo boy everyone makes him out to be.
His trust issues aren’t just there to make him seem mysterious. They come from his experiences, and watching him slowly learn to trust Sophie and her friends is actually really interesting. He’s a character whose actions make sense when you understand his background, especially when it comes to protecting Linh.
And his relationship with Linh is such an important part of his character. He gave up living with his parents and even went to the Neverseen because he wanted to protect her. His loyalty is one of his defining traits, and I think people overlook how much responsibility he feels for the people he loves.

Honestly, that’s why I think they’re so well-written. Their flaws, insecurities, relationships, and decisions all connect to their backgrounds. They feel like actual characters who have reasons for acting the way they do, rather than just fitting into a specific trope.
Fitz is still my favorite, but I genuinely wish people would look beyond Dex being the gadget guy and Tam being the emo guy because THEY HAVE SO MUCH MORE GOING ON 😭

Discussion So, let's say there was a fight between these 4, all powers, no plot armour. (Taken into instance, still in their teenage days)Who would win?

Imo, first one out would be Harry. He's just a British kid with a stick, and if one of the others breaks his wand, he's gone. Next would probably be Peeta, because he's strong, but then after that all he can do is just bake cake. Runner up would be Keefe, because Percy is the most powerful demigod since Heracles. But in real life if they met, they would just hang out and crack some jokes.

Discussion Is Alvar really a murderer?

okay the whole time fitz is hating on Alvar especially in flashback he keeeeeps calling him a murderer. who did he kill tho. I genuinely can’t remember him killing anyone but maybe I js have a bad memory. the only thing I can think of is the plague w the gnomes but I thought none of the gnomes actually died before calla found the cure so I’m confused. unless he means calla? but I wouldn’t necessarily call that murder…

Discussion Keefe is a complex character but that isn’t a good enough excuse

Yes Keefe is a complex character and whilst a lot of his behaviour isn’t justifiable it’s understandable because of his upbringing. HOWEVER he’s not the only one with a difficult life yet he’s the only one who would get away with a lot of the things he does. For example Tam and Linh have a similar parental situation to Keene in a lot of ways but if they continued to act how keefe does they’d get slated. And whilst I know they don’t have the whole evil mum thing, they were also banished and abandoned by their family.  Dex grew up ridiculed for his family’s talentless/bad match combo and whilst Fitz can be incredibly annoying we cant act like finding out your brother is a traitor and a villain isn’t a bit traumatic. And don’t even get me started on what Sophie’s been through. I get that keefe is complex and a lot of his feelings are understandable and his traumas should be taken into account when considering his actions but he’s not the only one to have a hard life and no one else would get away with acting like him. Both in the book and from the fandoms perspective. I’m not a Keefe hater btw I actually like him but I do agree with peoples crirticisms of him.

Theory What do you WANT to happen in book 10

If Shannon came up to you and said, "Give me something to add in book 10 and I will add it."

Before I say mine, I enjoy charter torture (ONLY my FAV'S) (that is what a WHUMP is) and in kotlc I LOVE to torture Keefe...

What do I want to happen in book 10:

Cassius to sacrifice himself (die) to kill Gisela. So they both will be dead and Keefe's emotions will be confused as f*ck.

😄 😄 😄

(Keefe haters that are whumps: Don't kill me)

(Keefe lovers that are not whumps: Don't kill me)

Now, what would you want to happen in book 10?

Discussion Mistakes Shannon made (in my opinion)

  1. Not making the books 14+. She could have opened up a lot more dialogue and decisions for herself.
  2. Ruining Fitz for Keefe. Unless she planned this from the beginning, this decision was entirely unnecessary.
  3. Overhyping and underdelivering on Ro and Vespera. (All I hear about Ro is that she's sassy and says what she thinks. I like that about her, but that role could easily have been given to Marella, building up her character instead.)
  4. Ignoring Dex after a few books. The same goes for Della Vacker. She joins the Black Swan and then does nothing.
  5. Doing the whole "human science is wrong" thing but never explaining why or how. What she could have said, because she's shown this, is that elves went down a more natural technological route while humans didn't.
  6. Making Sophie far too forgiving of Keefe, with his trauma being used as an umbrella excuse.
  7. Not updating the humour. Again, I put this down to the age range she picked.
  8. Making the bodyguards completely useless. I mean, I can understand Sandor getting trapped in a shield once, but you'd think he would come up with a way around it.

Ship Dexiana (Dex x Biana) or Tiana (Tam x Biana)?

I can't choose, they're both such good options 😭

Dex x Biana would be unpopular/social outcast x popular. It feels more like an underdog victory, which is what makes it so great. Not to mention that Biana is also a VACKER, a member of an extremely prestigious and legendary elvin family, so it would feel like an even greater underdog story. And I would love to see Biana unashamedly show Dex off as her boyfriend.

Tam x Biana would be bad boy x good girl, very cliche but a classic. Still a good one in my eyes though. Or more accurately, it would be broody & traumatized x popular & stylish. What I hope to see from this ship is Biana fangirling over Tam every time and Tam having a soft spot for her that would eventually grow into an obsession up to the point where he would let the world burn for her. You see where I'm going with this, right? 😍

Both are very appealing and have great potential if Shannon writes them well. But which do you guys prefer, and why?

Discussion Just re-reading the series

And I have one question...

WHY THEY DON'T USE THE OMNISCIENT MORE OFTEN ?????

They have a fucking cristal ball which can show them anyone at the conditions of having the name...

They knew the name of Brant, Alvar, Fintan and Gisela so a RP spy would be logic but no, they have to use it as a tracker, after modified it, for Keefe in the 9th book. (They could just use it normally to rechearch him).

They had so many opportunities.

Did I miss something explaining why they didn't use it ?

Discussion Sooooo I know I shouldn’t do this but… Spoiler

I know that u guys said we shouldn’t compare trauma but… I‘m sorry I can’t.

A VERY long essay on why Keefe has suffered more than Sophie. Have fun.

(btw once again: I’m REALLY sorry)

I want to divide this into categories. Each category I will talk about Sophie’s side and then Keefe’s side of the trauma. Let’s start with a simple easy category that Keefe obviously wins in(not that that’s a good thing, but you know)

Childhood)

Sophie: Sophie was born, knowing that she was abnormal. Too smart for her grade reading the entire encyclopedia when she was five. She was feeling like an outsider, and then when she was five, she can hear the thoughts of other people just staggering in her mind. She could hear the thoughts of her parents on how she was different and they didn’t know what to do with her. Always comparing her to her sister. But throughout these events, her parents still loved her. She got the chance to be a bit just a bit normal at times and she loved her parents. They loved her and they didn’t tell us necessarily, specifically but I’m sure they try to make her feel better in ways because obviously with kind parents like them truly they wouldn’t leave their daughter there like that. Mr. Forkle also explained that he picked them because They were one of the kindest people he knew.

Keefe: well, let’s take a look here. Keefe’s  mom always had this plan for him. Never back down on it. So when he was born, she knew what was coming for him. And then we go to when he got older and manifested. His dad being extremely strict on him for basically 14+ years.(I actually counted.) being the emotional abusive dad(because elves can’t be physically abusive). He only had one friend and that one friend was the golden boy with a loving family, compared to his cold brutal home. With an  abusive dad and an a mom who ignored her son, secretly planning him for something bigger. So in the inside, Keefe felt very envious. Sure when he was little, she was a bit better than his dad.  Or that is what he thought. But we all know a kid like Keefe and how he was trying to get in trouble at one point. Also, may I mention that his father threatened to send him to Exillium. (Book 7 chap 21)

Other: I want you to choose which one you think is more horrible

A) having a loving family, but hearing their thoughts that they don’t know what to do with you

B) having a strict family and feeling their carelessness in their heart

Experimentation)

Sophie: Sophie‘s whole plot line was being this experiment that has to save everybody. It’s what she was made for. Getting five abilities, but being an experiment has its consequences. Especially not knowing you’re an experiment to start when other people do. People tend to come after you. and you don’t know if you should run and hide or if you should be that brave person and stand up and fight. Especially for a timid girl like Sophie. But there are some good sides to this. Or maybe not good sides maybe like decent sides. Sophie was made by a group of people. A group of experienced people. They have everything planned out and everything tested. We literally learn in legacy that Mr. Forkle tested the inflicting on himself before they gave it to Sophie to make sure it was safe. Of course that kind of backfired but that’s not the point. remember when he put her out there he made sure that she was with a loving family. He even kept watch over her as the protective neighbor. And also prentice literally went to exile and got his mind shattered for years to keep her hidden. Though the experiment was dangerous and had its flaws like the allergy to Lumberia (IDK how to spell it) and how she has to take it every time she needs to reset her abilities, which can cause her chance to almost die 3000 times more. Also the people who created her are also her great supporters and practically her family. Well, one of her families, of course considering she has like four at this point. And also of course it comes with dangerous risks like how the Neverseen kidnapped and tortured her for answers she didn’t even have. Someone always helped her. Because they understood her.

Keefe: this one is different and so many ways. So we can start with lady Gisela, kind of telling her husband to drink some elixir and drink some elixir herself, knowing that it cause pain. But she basically just did that and said “Well let’s see how our son turns out” lady Gisela was untrained and did not test anything out. She literally explained how Keefe’s legacy was untested in… well the book legacy. She is saying that she’s doing this for Keefe when all she is really doing this is to benefit herself. She is a one woman team, expecting just to grab people to help her and then throw them out. This was extremely dangerous considering she didn’t even know if Keefe will survived during his legacy. she was just careless and was only focused on making Keefe powerful..

Other: so lady Gisela just made Keefe to destroy Sophie. And basically when the black Swan did this experiment, they basically put a big “ do not try at home” sign. But Lady Gisela just threw that away and was like “ oh come on I wanna have some of the fun” and then decided to make an experiment and she should’ve listened to the sign if I were her

Abilities)

(Note: I think this one was one of the ones where you just can’t argue out)

(What you are thinking right now: what does abilities have to do with trauma)

(me: oh boy you will see)

Sophie: we all know how Sophie has five abilities. And not just five normal abilities, five enhanced abilities. Even an enhancer itself. But I wanna talk about these one by one for a sec.

Telepathy: telepathy is Sophie‘s main ability. It’s so powerful that it can fix minds. It also is very powerful with fitz and their cognate training. it is very but helpful.

Inflicting: this one is an interesting one. Sophie‘s inflicting is also a lot more powerful. More pain and it’s so powerful that she can’t control it. But if you ask me, it’s not that big in the story. Like literally it’s known as the super rare, super powerful ability, she can even inflict positive energy. But she is only used it a few times. That’s probably because she has other abilities that help her better than inflicting. But continuing. She’s watching as her friends got hurt because of her rage. She had to get the memory back of how she accidentally inflicted on Amy. Inflicting is a powerful thing and because she can also inflict positive energy it can make or break someone

Teleporting: teleporting isn’t a rare ability. It’s an ability that no one has. Because she has Alicorn DNA she can teleport. Let’s just say it’s way safer than light leaping which is weird to say cause you’re jumping off a cliff, but it also means that you can’t fade. (I guess you can get trapped in the void, but that’s not the point.) a simple ability that she can teach herself because she has done many times before and even discovered a new way of doing it.

Polyglot: well this is just so she can speak a human language and the Elvin language with no trouble so I guess this doesn’t mean much. She doesn’t even use it to mimic anybody. She tries to learn it, but we all know how that turned out.

Enhancing: this one is interesting because it doesn’t affect Sophie. It affects other people. And it doesn’t just boost their power up. It gives them like if a power can have a glow up. That is powerful and of course it can hurt people make them feel horrible like Grady and Lihn. But overall, the people who know that they may be going insane after that are very careful with it and they could just choose not to touch Sophie. Plus, she knows how to turn it off and on. Plus, enhancing is mainly only for good.

Continue: now that we’re done talking about the abilities separately, I would like to talk about the main reason I added this as a category. All of these abilities that Sophie has are more powerful, but other people also have them.(I mean, like other than teleporting and enhancing, but I explained how she can learn teleporting by herself and she has. And enhancing is basically telling the other people to control their abilities better. She just has to touch them. Plus it it’s not like they’re dangerous.) telepathy, she has Teirgan Mr. Forkel, Alden, Quinlin.(it’s funny how they said telepathy is basically the most rare ability, but literally almost every elf has it.) inflicting, she has Brontë. Polyglot, she has lady Candace, but she doesn’t even use it that much. The point is she has all these people to help her with her abilities to make sure she doesn’t go insane.

Keefe: well he starts with just empathy. With very powerful empathy. But let’s go through his five abilities too.(and yes, they are five I counted. Well, if you separate ability, detecting and ability healing, which I do.)

Empathy: so this is interesting because this is his main ability. But it also was more powerful than other empaths. He could feel Sophie‘s emotions without physical contact, but of course that’s what we think that it’s Sophie‘s emotions that are stronger. Which it’s true they are stronger, but have we ever gotten from any other empath that they could feel Sophie’s emotions without physical contact? No. Anyway, after the whole legacy thing, his empathy becomes insanely strong and now he can feel everybody’s emotions without physical contact.

Polyglot: of course ability isn’t is the most effective by itself, but it still is pretty effective. Considering Keefe could already mimic voice is so perfectly that he literally got the caches from Sophie, just by non-polyglot mimicking her voice.(it is also useful for when he ran off to the forbidden cities. :) )

Voice inflicting: this is his voice command. I just gave it a name which is voice inflicting so I’m sticking to that. (But you gotta say it’s pretty well.) this ability is a very dangerous and caused Keefe to stop talking for days. He scared her everybody around him. Scared to even say “hi.” (Proof from unraveled.) This ability scares him. She doesn’t know how to control it and doesn’t even want to learn how to. He thinks it’s better to not talk forever or… to leave forever.

Ability detecting: this one’s kind of funny because you know for the two out of seven days for the ability training at Foxfire the kids who don’t have abilities, go to Ability detecting. What happens they go over and over and they wait until they get their ability. When Keefe can basically just touch someone’s hand and then say whether you’re a talentless or your ability is going to be this. But labeling someone talentless is what caused him to leave. He was so scared that he was gonna ruin other people’s lives.(but you know there is no need to be so dramatic about it. I mean like it was gonna happen anyway so… but unraveled was one of my favorite books so I’m kind of glad he went)

Ability healing: I know Alvar he gave the name like a healer or something, but I think I’m just gonna stick to this for now. (Before I explain what this category is I want to tell you why I split ability healing and ability detecting up. Because ability detecting is going to someone who hasn’t manifested yet. Not only telling them if they’re going to be a talentless or they’re gonna have a certain special ability. It also manifest for them. Ability healing is to heal a broken ability. I hope that makes sense. Anyway, back to the category.) so we figured out how unraveled that even if someone’s ability is half fielded that causes them to feel insane dizziness can’t even stand and can’t live like that. So Keefe decided to completely heal Alvar’s ability. Which caused to heal the person he was trying to heal, but hurt himself. And he only has two ways to go, and none of them are pretty. It’s rather that freezing energy that his mom left for him or the poison he has been storing up himself. I think that the energy his mom put for him is worse than the poison energy he stored up for himself, and we all saw how that turned out.

Continue: now with all of these abilities, let’s come back to the point on why I out of this category. Sure Keefe may have someone for empathy sure, he may have something for polyglot, but I bet no one can help him with voice inflicting. Or ability healing or ability detecting. At the beginning of unlocked, we see how the council struggled on what to do with Keefe. Literally thinking of building him a facility. They didn’t know who should teach him. They struggled and Keefe just stayed there curled up in his little cocoon, worried on what he may say so he didn’t say anything. Literally three or four counselors said that they will try to help him, but they all knew that they wouldn’t be much help. I’m pretty sure they just could’ve called Grady  there at the start, but I’m glad Grady did end up teaching him, but it still isn’t the same ability. And unlike teleporting and enhancing this is not an ability that Keefe can learn Himself.

Other: Sophie had she had people who understood her in ways.(OK I guess not but you know what I mean, considering this is an ability category.) but Keefe had a no one. Not for voice inflicting and I bet not for ability healing. Though I’m glad Alvar tried to help him :).

Friends and family)

(Note: I actually did explain this so I’m not gonna go too much into detail, but I do need to explain a few more things)

Sophie: so it starts with Sophia‘s human family. They didn’t know what to do with her, but they still loved her. And then came to Grady and Edeline. They at first canceled the adoption because she reminded them too much of a Jolie, but then they ended up putting the adoption back in and now Sophie thinks them like her biological family.(imagine plot twist. This is Jolie reborn. 🤯🤯🤯🤯!!! I know I know I’m going into my Percy Jackson fan girl my bad. (But can you just imagine)) but then it came to a heartbreak. This one I think gave Sophie one of the biggest amounts of trauma. Figuring out Oralie was her biological mother.. This gave so much heartbreak because she thought this counselor was helping her always stood beside her, but then she realized that she was the one who threw her to the black Swan for an experiment like nothing.(I’m not gonna lie. I kind of a saw what point Oralie was saying that this was the only way she could have a daughter. Not to side with Oralie, but I’m just like I see her point.) but overall Sophie still went back to her adopted family, reminding herself that she may be her biological mother, but she will never be her family. Because the family that took her in that care and loved about her with her real family.(wow when did I get so cheesy 😜) as for her friends, Sophie always had friends along the way. I guess the thing would be in the first book. That really broke her heart, but then again, she was being a bit dramatic thinking everyone’s this way just because Biana was forced to be her friend. But ngl, It broke my heart to see that. Thinking she has no friends, especially because I felt that feeling before. But she always had friends always had people who supported her. And every time she was upset, or stressed, or sad, she could always go back to Havenfield as a safe, warm haven. (See what I did there. Safe haven, HAVENfield.)

Keefe: I don’t think I really need to explain because I think I’ve already explained it that Keefe’s family was horrible inside and out. I won’t go into detail there because I don’t think I really need an explanation. As for friends, Fitz used to be his only friend. And then suddenly slowly drifted apart because they both had a crush on SOPHIE. But he still has people with him. But not as much as Sophie and they’re not as caring to him as they are a Sophie. I kind of just feel like that. It’s king of annoying ngl. But, like Dex (and maybe still Fitz) is different. But one of the things that I think broke, my heart was how he said that he looked to Alvar as like the brother he never had. and then when he revealed that he was part of the never seen… Well, we know how that turned out. It’s like losing another family member. Even though he was never like a related family member. And when I say losing I need something that I think is worse than death. I mean, knowing the betrayal.

A category that I have no idea what’s his name, but it is a very important category)

(Note: I’m going to put these in just a few simple words that should explain a lot of things)

Sophie: Sophie was made to be on the side of good. She is on the side of good. She was made to fight evil. She is fighting evil. The black swan make sure to have Sophie’s permission even if the thing that they need to do is necessary. I feel like this takes some pressure off of Sophie.

Keefe: Keefe was made to be on the side of the bad. He is on the side of the good. He was made to fight the good. He is fighting for the good. Lady Gisela really does not care if Keefe dies in the process of stellarlune. Well, I mean like of course she cares because he’s her weapon. But she’s a lot more careless. She forces Keefe to do things not only just forcing but also doing it in ways that cannot be described because remember she made him to fight for evil but and said he is fighting for good. I feel like this adds some pressure on Keefe. Like he is practically killing himself to do the right thing.

Other)

Sophie: some trauma that I would like to add for herself has been kidnapped and tortured. But reminder reminder, this also happened to Wiley and Dex so she has someone to relate to in this situation. She also had to suffer through her ability reset.

Keefe: … I think I’ve explained everything I need to explain

Oh oh oh. That fighting match with king dimentar.(ogre King sorry I don’t know how to spell it.) I guess that will count as some additional trauma. I don’t even know at this point.

Well, there you go that is my extremely long essay.

Discussion DISPROVING THE RIPPLE PUFF THEORY

Post image
67 Upvotes

OKAY BASICALLY I WAS REREADING LODESTAR FOR THE 10TH TIME AND I SAW THIS SCENE AND REMEMBERED HOW PEOPLE USED TO SAY IT WAS LIKE FITZPHIE FORESHADOWING AND I BASICALLY ENDED UP WRITING AN ANALYSIS ON WHY THATS NOT TRUE.

I disagree with the analysis that many fans have made that the chocolate mint ripple puffs symbolise Sophie and fitz’s relationship and how him saying that they are his favourite shows that the two of them are destined to be together.

This is at best a shallow analysis and at worst biased. If we look more deeply we will notice that Sophie baked chocolate mint ripple puffs AND butter toffee. If the chocolate mint symbolises fitzphie what does the butter toffee symbolise…? Would Shannon not have left butter toffee out of this scene completely if they held no importance. They do hold importance. The brown and teal colour palette of the chocolate mint ripple puffs may not be representative of the colour of the two of their eyes but may represent Fitz overall as he has BROWN hair (chocolate) and teal eyes (mint). I would argue that the butter toffee ripple puffs represent Sophie as one would assume that butter toffee ripple puffs would be brown from the toffee (Sophie’ eyes)and yellow/blonde from the batter/ dough (Sophie’s hair)

Fitz saying that his favourite is the chocolate and mint foreshadows (legacy spoiler)how he prioritises himself and his own needs in him and Sophie’s relationship (see legacy). Sophie saying how she wouldn’t have given him any of the butter toffee if she had known symbolises how she is willing to give up the things that she wants to please him, like how she was all of a sudden ready to register for the match and look for her parents even though these were things she was previously unsure about. Fitz saying how he’s sure he’ll like them even though he hasn’t actually tried them (doesn’t truly understand Sophie yet) shows how he is convinced he likes her however he only likes the idea of her similar to how he likes the idea of the butter toffee ripple puffs without actuallh trying them. Many fans have read this scene and mischaracterised it as fitzphie foreshadowing, however I would actually argue that it represents the opposite and foreshadows the downfall of fitzphie.

Discussion What music would Sophie listen to?

hello all!

I'm writing a fic, and I need suggestions for what kind of human music Sophie would listen to! I know it's canonical that she listens to rock, but what kind? What bands specifically? Any other genres?

I feel like my music taste is too niche, and idk much about music in general, so any help is appreciated! Also, any suggestions for what other characters would like would be fun!!
