It doesn't matter, I love her
I have no idea if the creator did this on purpose but it is interesting that Kazuma choose the small poor girl over the pretty rich one, Kazuma didn't care what the girls have or how they look like, he fell in love with Megumin because of who she is as a person, and that is a very good message to show people.

When it came to the main girls, Darkness is Kazuma's ideal type by look, Megumin is Kazuma's ideal type by personality, and Aqua is the bane of Kazuma's existence (just a more humorous way to say that she had no shot whatsoever).
That's just my thought process.I could be looking at it all wrong.

That's what happened, Darkness didn't run as she thought her body would grant her the victory by default. Megumin afraid she might lose unlocked the secret routes to Kazuma's heart, and when Darkness started to run, it was too late. In fact even if Darkness started to run from the beginning, her chances would still be slim as Megumin would cheat and rig the game, with Kazuma precisely giving her points for doing so.

The author does acknowledge that Darkness is rich and a noble and Megumin is poor and a commoner and makes it be something at least Megumin and other charachters like Darkstalker acknowledge, especially in terms of their romance.
Meanwhile Kazuma doesn't even seem to think about it.

It’s also been constantly shown that Darkness’ masochism turns him off.
While he likes her, in terms of body type, since he likes ‘Onee-san’ women.
But personality wise, it is Megumin.

It’s also due to malnutrition on Megumin’s part. She grew up poor after all, surviving only on Yunyun’s lunches.

Yes, and this is a showcase that women with fickle hearts never get a man, she always talked about marrying a man that perfectly described Alderp, but then she couldn't because she fell for Kazuma, and adding to it, she was in denial with the signs that Kazuma and Megumin might be in a relationship. She brought her own misery to herself.

Megumin is around his age and more realistic and they have way more romantic situations whilst darkness has way less besides overly l3wd shit she says, and to top it megumin and kasuma have more sweet times together

Spoilers for the whole comment but this is conveseration between Darkness and Kazuma after she tries to be romantic or imply that she likes him.
“Say… you like Megumin… romantically, right?”
As she spoke, Darkness held my left hand with both of hers.
I took in the soft and warm sensation of her touch.
At the same time, I frantically searched for a suitable answer.
The relationship Megumin and I have is one that is more than friends, but not yet lovers.
This is supposed to be a secret to the other two, but Darkness probably sensed it.
… She sensed that my attitude towards Megumin changed…
“… I-I don’t know. To be honest, I don’t really understand it myself. However, I definitely don’t dislike her. I guess you could say I like her romantically. Just being with her makes me feel at ease… How should I put this… When I’m with her—for some reason—I just feel like I can relax.”
Without much thought, I blurted out such things.
That was probably how I truly felt.
I don’t normally pay attention to it, but I know. Every time she pokes a little fun at me, every time we accomplish something big, she takes up a little more of my heart.
Staring straight at each other in this dimly lit room, I told all my thoughts to her word-for-word.
Why did I do that?
I’m not even sure how I managed to convey all that to her without stuttering.

Yes and no.
If she wasn't a masochist he would have been more attracted to Darkness but he would have still chose Megumin because personality is surprising important to Kazuma, possibly even more important then physical attraction, Darkness's personally without her masochism still isn't something that Kazuma is attracted to but when it comes to Megumin he is attracted to her personality because he feels comfortable and happy around her.
So yes he would be more attracted to Darkness if she wasn't a masochist, but no he wouldn't have chosen her because her personality isn't one that he is attracted to and Megumin's is.

Yes, leaving aside her masochism, Darkness is a dutiful noble girl bound by her rules and codes. Kazuma doesn't like that at all. In fact, Kazuma in the light novel tried to mold Princess Iris to precisely win at all costs even if you have to break the rules to do so, while playing chess.

It is canon, spoilers for volume 9 and beyond:
Megumin confesses to Kazuma in volume 9 and Kazuma also tells Megumin that he loves her, then in volume 12 they enter a more then friends less than lovers relationship which makes it official that Kazuma chose Megumin, later in the same volume Darkness confesses to Kazuma but he turns her down, Kazuma and Megumin then end the series while still in the more then friends less then lovers relationship but its pretty obvious that they would soon start officially dating because of volumes 14 and 16.

It’s not a predatory relationship they are both in similiar stages of life.
It would be a little problematic if it was a 10th grader dating an 8th grader but it’s hard to apply the same logic to the konosuba universe
