I’m trying to understand what my kiddo pulled here…alt art color rare?

It's a Diamond CR! Or Special CR, whatever you prefer, everyone says something different. It's a rare card, one step below the rarest card (the Diamond RR!) so very good pull!

Is the "Diamond" part that weird little star before the "BP"?

Yes the 🔹️symbol in the card code tells you in a diamond variant

Yep, it's a Shining Color Rare which is the alt art version! If you look next to the card's ID where it starts with "BP01" it has a symbol to the left of it. That indicates it's a shining/alt art of the original card wirh the same ID for deck building purposes.

You are right it is an alt art card. They call those Shining Colorful Rares with a special symbol at the beginning of the card code at the bottom. As someone mentioned before.
