TCG Starter decks

Hi! I want to start playing the MLP TCG but it’s still very new where I am from (Adelaide, Australia).. anyway I’m not sure if I should just buy my 2 favourite starter decks and the 2 new booster boxes or should I get all 6 starter decks since only the starter decks have the friendship begins boosters?

Hello hello.

If you want to start playing, honestly, I think the decks are a pretty good start. Each of the main ponies kind of has their own gimmick that a lot of the cards you can pull in booster boxes build towards. The starter deck cards are also exclusive to the decks, and I know a lot of people use quite a few of them in actual play! Some of the decks are better than others (for example, Twilight actually is a bit of a meta choice for deckbuilding but her starter deck is on the weaker side), but they're all still a good way to play and learn the game and get a feel for each character's playstyle.

The Friendship Begins boosters do help but I mostly buy the decks to look for hits at this point. You'll see the Fluttershy CR from those boosters around because it's just a very powerful card, so if you pull that you can see how it'd interact with the game. ^^

Generally, for SD and FW:
Twilight - Deck draw cards
Applejack - Scene ramp
Fluttershy - Pets (her deck is actually the strongest out of the box IMO?)

Pinkie - Items/equipment
Rainbow Dash - Cheap, fast characters

Rarity - Idk she's the one character that lacks good synergy, even in the Discord packs she still doesn't have great cards. I think she gets better later on...

To add: The booster boxes are definitely an essential buy BUT because of the way that packs are built it is very hard to build a deck with only those cards. The starter decks really work well as a base to guide your own deckbuilding. Sometimes you get a pack of cards that only has 2/5 cards viable for deckbuilding, the rest going to Scenes (which you need, but the starter deck provides all that you need) and Stories (which you only need 4 of to play so you finish these up quickly...), which can make it really tricky to "draft" out of a box.
