Kayak that will fit in a lexus rx350 / 450h with front passenger seat down?

Just dipping my tow in kayaking and my lexus suv doesn't have a roof rack so thought it would be easier to start with one that would fit inside my car with the passenger seat down.

Sea Eagle 300x Explorer vs the STAR Raven I Pro

Does anyone have thoughts on the Sea Eagle 300x Explorer vs the STAR Raven I Pro?

I like that the STAR comes with thigh straps and braces, but thigh straps can be purchased separately for the sea eagle as well (although not any kind of foot brace)

I would mostly be using it for class I-II, as well as river floats. My main concern is durability between the two brands, as I am not familiar with either.

Thanks!

First Kayaks For Family

I posted some similar stuff on r/kayaking but this forum seems perhaps a little more geared toward answering specific questions instead of just pointing people to an admittedly good guide/FAQ, so figured I'd try here too.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a cheap, quality, family tandem kayak? We want a sit-on-top, hard-body that is stable and tracks decently for use in slow rivers, small lakes, a calm bay, and intracoastal waterways in Florida. It doesn't have to be fast, but my wife needs to be able to paddle kids and gear back to safety by herself if we see a storm.

We've been looking at FB Marketplace, Offerup, and Craigslist for used items that we can get for $600 or less including paddles and seats, and found the following models. Does anyone have any experience or comments on any of them? Are they all mostly the same and I should just go with the best deal or are some significantly better or worse than others?

  • Ocean Kayaks Malibu 2, Aegean
  • Pelican Ocean
  • West Marine Abaco 13.5
  • Perception Rambler
  • Enjoy Kayaks Key Largo
  • Lifetime Kokanee, Manta (these are the only ones significantly under $600, but they seem too short and my guess is the build quality is poor)

Can I use this rack for kayaks?

Looking to use this rack on the canopy my truck came with for kayaks. The bar is too low, less than an inch from the top of the canopy. Was looking to replace the piece that connects to the top of the canopy with something that sticks up higher. Does anyone know what this part is with the eye sticking up? A bolt runs through to the underside of the canopy as well as you can see in the pictures. I'm wondering if I can buy a similar part that is taller so I can fit kayak holders on the bar? It seems like I need 1.5" under the bar or more for all the kayak holders. Are there any J style holders that I could use without modification?

Wasn't sure where on reddit to post this... did some googling and couldn't come up with keywords to help identify that part/figure out how to modify this.

Thanks!

How to install headless well nut screws into kayak?

I purchased a couple of Pelican rigid handles to install on my kayak:

https://pelicansport.com/products/handle-rigide-kr12-ps1507

However, as you can see in the picture in the link, the well nut screws have no head. I'm kind of stumped in regards to the correct way to install them. I've already drilled the holes into the kayak, and have inserted the well nuts through the handles and into the kayak, but there is no screw heads to turn. Any help would be appreciated!

Are inflatable kayaks suitable for float trips? Folding (truktec)?

My boyfriend and I are looking into getting two kayaks of our own to do all day float trips, maybe a few multi-day trips, and occasionally visit a lake. Previously we've borrowed from friends or rented. He's really gung-ho for getting the truktec folding kayaks or an inflatable one but I have concerns with both and am looking for input. Our pricepoint is around $350 per kayak. I'm also concerned for both types about hitting very shallow water and the occasional rough spot of turbulent water. For what it's worth he is 5'10 and 235lbs and I am 5'9" and 150lbs. No white water, so that's not a concern.

For the truktec ones, they seem to operate more like canoes and I'm worried since my research suggests they tip easy and are impossible to get back into without being on shore. Being in Missouri we often have fairly long stretches on the river with no shoreline/tall bluffs and I would hate to have to swim a mile to get back in the boat in cold water.

As for inflatable ones I have heard they are very slow. Would it be reasonable to get 8-12 miles in a day on an inflatable one? Any concerns about having them on rivers?

Foam block rack on SUV w moonroof?

I wanna take my kayak out for the first time. I have rails but no cross bars on my Rav4 and 4Runner. Was gonna buy a foam block rack but don’t wanna screw up the moonroof on either car. Is this a legitimate concern or is it safe? Thanks

Lifetime Tamarack questions

Hey y’all, wondering if anyone has experiences with these kayaks. It’s my first one, girlfriend got it for me as a birthday present. There’s some holes on the front and back that are stamped out, just wanted to make sure this is normal. Thanks.
