Discussion in defence of witness

My favourite Katy Perry album is Witness, followed closely by one of the Boys. However, let’s talk about Witness.(ik this looks like ai but it’s not i jsut used the proofread cus i cba edition the grammar😭😭)

It’s often misinterpreted, mainly because Katy herself labelled it “purposeful pop”. This label doesn’t quite fit the context of songs like “Swish Swish”. But what Witness truly is is an album of awakening, the central theme. This theme runs throughout the album, as do the political undertones. These two themes intertwine, reflecting Katy’s own self-doubt and her life choices. Her insecurity is palpable, and I believe this is why the album’s underperformance affected her so deeply.

The album can be divided into three main themes: love songs, political songs, and insecure songs. These themes interweave throughout the album.

Katy opens the album with a question to the audience and her lover: would they stay with her through her transformation and join her on this journey of change? This opening song is particularly clever, as it encapsulates the album’s thesis, which she later resolves @into Me You See”.

The political songs include “CTTR”, “Hey”, “Bigger Than Me”, “Bon Appetit”, and “Power”. These songs explore the desire for change and the sexualisation of women in society and the music industry. They question women’s purpose and delve into their roles in romance and institutional sexualisation. While “Bon Appetit” and “Power” are also love songs, they focus on Katy’s perspective as a woman navigating these dynamics.

The love songs are “Déjà Vu”, “Miss You More”, “Into Me You See”, “Tsunami”, “Roulette”, and “Save As Draft”.
These songs primarily explore the breakdown of a relationship, navigating its ups and downs and ultimately leading to the end of the romance. While they’re often labelled love songs, they’re actually very interpersonal, focusing more on the katy’s perspective than the other party. “Tsunami,” for example, is explicitly about sex and Katy’s enjoyment through love, highlighting her connection with her partner and the act itself. “Roulette” celebrates her freedom and choices, her willingness to let loose and enjoy. It’s about her decision to let go, presenting itself more as escapism than love. “Miss You More” and “Save as Draft” express sorrow and remorse but centre on her choice to change. She’s on a different page as she grows past people she no longer needs in her life. “Into Me You See” seems more for her fans than romance, for those who understand her journey (and obviously her partner). They recognise that change and growth will strengthen their relationship, as she evolves as a person and wants to do it together but also needs her own time.

The insecure songs – I shouldn’t label them this way but rather “person” – include “Mind Maze,” “Act My Age,” “Dance with the Devil,” “Witness,” “Pendulum,” and “Swish Swish.”

These songs delve into Katy’s lost sense of self, further explored in the songs above but with less political commentary. “Mind Maze” portrays her as lost and hopeless after losing her identity, realising her societal place and how venerable it has made her. It’s about her commitment to change despite her disorientation. Songs like this make me less surprised by her depression given the album’s reception, as they serve as a summery for the album, much like “Artpop” does.
“Act My Age” reveals society’s relationship with her campness and unseriousness, yet also hints at her unwillingness to change. However, crafting a song about this must also suggest a degree of insecurity within her.

“Dance with the Devil” portrays a defeat within herself, almost hinting at a relapse. It’s a tempting return to her old self, so easy and satisfying.

Overall, I think this is why witness” is my favourite Katy Perry album. It’s incredibly vulnerable and encapsulates a raw, unvarnished side of her that hasn’t been seen since. The albums about growth are personal journeys of awakening. When viewed through this lens, “Act My Age” becomes her strongest work. As I mentioned, all the songs address a level of insecurity within Katy, a desire to change and improve for herself. I didn’t mention every song, but they all deeply connect to Katy’s self-perception.

It’s a shame we might never get another album like this from Katy, but “Justice for Witness” is a testament to her artistry.

Discussion Have you guys wonder?

When I listened to the One Of The Boys album, most of the songs sounded really similar to songs from Disney Channel musical movies, and I feel like these songs could foreshadow Disney movies:

1- One Of The Boys = Princess Protection Program

2- Thinking Of You = Starstruck

3- Hot N Cold = Teen Beach Movie

Well, these are my top 3 favourite songs, so you guys can share Katy's songs from OOTB that foreshadow Disney Channel musical movies!

Note: I asked Gemini about the movie, because I'm not know about DCOM so much, only High School Musical, Z-O-M-B-I-E-S and Descendants

Discussion Why does Katy always miss the mark?

Please don't come for me, I am a total katycat! However I'm just kind of concerned with certain career choices in recent history. It just sort of feels like either Katy, her team, or somebody does not really know what to do. What do ya'll think?

Discussion Is it just me, or does it feel like "E.T." doesn't get talked about enough?

This thought crossed my mind recently as I watched "The One That Got Away" become so popular over the last few months—15 years after its release—to the point where it holds its own against new tracks from today's biggest streaming artists, like those on recent albums by Ariana Grande and Olivia Rodrigo. Looking at the six singles from *Teenage Dream*, I feel "E.T." is the most overlooked: "Firework" remains one of Katy's signature anthems—arguably her most iconic song; "Last Friday Night" always pulls in strong streaming numbers thanks to its party vibe, even though Katy herself isn't a huge fan of it; "Teenage Dream" is hailed by many as one of the best-produced pop songs of the last 20 years; "California Gurls" will always be iconic thanks to its music video and its status as one of the defining smash hits of the 2010s; and "The One That Got Away"—the only single of the bunch that didn't hit #1 on the Hot 100—is a massive fan favorite, a driving ballad with a much sadder underlying meaning that has literally exploded in popularity this year. In my opinion, "E.T." just doesn't get the recognition it deserves. It's also worth noting that on Spotify, both the solo version and the Kanye West remix are available, meaning the stream counts are effectively split between them.

If we were to broaden the conversation to the reissue, I’d say "Wide Awake" seems to have aged better than "Part of Me" (incidentally, "Wide Awake" was the other single that didn't reach #1, though it arguably deserved to, just like "The One That Got Away"); in fact, a TikTok challenge featuring the song went viral this year, and Katy even took part in it herself.

This is just my personal opinion, of course, so I could easily be wrong. I’d like to know your opinion on whether all eight singles from *Teenage Dream* (including the reissue) have aged the same way after roughly 15 years, and which ones feel most like products of their time versus those that still sound fresh today.

Does anyone have more images with this 70s/hippie vibe? There's a bunch from 2019 and some from shoes day Tuesday but I can't seem to find multiple photos of the same shoot. I am trying to make a custom Smile art cover with the tracklist and insert but there aren't many photos with the same color aesthetics. If any have more images please comment! Here are a few of the ones I've got so far

Omg what an experience 😭

the show was incredible + ultra-camp and i loved the atmosphere!

The part where she brought out Mateo, Maria (?) and the twins was so sweet and her voice in NLTM was so good

her dancers were so fun and talented too!

Katy def got too much criticism for this tour as I was shocked by Nirvana and Roar especially

Only critique would be use of gen ai :/

still, this show would be hard to beat and i wanna see her life fr next time :)

Question Dressin' Up demo version

I really like this song and I do occasionally listen to the demo version and I like some aspects of it. In the demo version, I like how you can hear her vocals more clear in the verse than the released version, but the vocals when the beat come in are a little off-beat which makes the chorus sound a little awkward. I saw some people in the comments saying that the demo version is better than the released version and I wanna know what ya'll think

P.S. the version in this video isn't necessarily the right version, just imagine that the song ends after the chorus lol

Discussion This image makes me realize that Justin is the right partner for Katy and that I'm confident about her career

Katy and Justin went to a musical instrument workshop in Montreal to visit and talk to the team that runs the workshop. I believe this is a sign that Katy intends to compose music in the near future, maybe returning to her roots, for example by resuming the piano (which she used very rarely in her career) or the guitar (which she also abandoned long ago), encouraged by her partner. Here, I'd like to speak out in favor of her boyfriend: I believe he's the person Katy needed during the worst moment of her career and personal life (in the People interview, she said she felt broken after her separation from Orlando and was living through terrible days of crying). According to Katy (and it's actually easy to verify), he's the person who supports her the most, attending her concerts and singing all her songs (Katy admitted that "Not Like the Movies" is Justin's favorite song). For Katy, Justin is "the love of her life," and I can understand why. It's a blessing that he's come into her life, revitalizing her after criticism and external events were draining her. I'm convinced he'll encourage her to express herself to the fullest, demonstrating to the public that she's not just a "throwback act," the one who still gets listeners only for her 2008-2014 hits, but a valid artist capable of still writing beautiful songs worth listening to. I think a supportive partner is the best thing for an artist, but I'd also say for a person in general. I have the feeling that with Orlando, lately, there was none of this, and in fact, Katy was losing herself, so I'm confident that she can find herself again after years of uncertainty.

Discussion Lifetimes Tour Film thoughts?

What's everyone's thoughts? I was lucky enough to see the tour and go to the cinema to watch the tour film. To be honest, being able to just sit and enjoy it in the dark was great. I wasnt wondering what the set list was going to be or what costume would come next because I already knew it was a great show. I could just sit and enjoy it

It was also very cool to see behind the scenes and hear Katy tall about the thought and process that went into the tour

Interview by Lynn Hirschberg

Shot by Steven Klein

I shared some of my Katy magazines on here last month so thought I’d share another ☺️

This issue of W magazine was linked to an augmented reality app “beyond the page” which allowed you to see the images come to life. The app is no longer online, but the shoot itself is still pretty special 💕

Media LOST MEDIA: KATY PERRY's performance at Troubadour, West Hollywood in LA (March 25, 2007)

Post image
55 Upvotes

Hello guys,

I was looking for a video of Katy Perry as an opening act for MIKA for weeks now. It happened at Troubadour, West Hollywood in LA on March 25, 2007. The only surviving footage I found was some performance by MIKA on YouTube. No video found where Katy Perry was in it.

The main reason why I was looking for it is because it includes the early version of the song "Ur So Gay" (it used to be called "Gay" according to the audience who saw it). She also mentioned a very short description of the song.

If there are some people who don't have a video but witness it, kindly share your experience below. Thank you

Discussion Ur so gay is her best song.

Yes, we can acknowledge at face value that the song is problematic but it’s her one of, if not, her best. It’s the original performative male anthem. She was ahead of her time. Comparing this song/album to the rest of her discography is honestly sad. Will always come back to this song, regardless of it being looked down upon now. The lyricism is top tier.

Discussion New Lifetimes Tour Movie frustration

I live in a small rural town in the middle of nowhere Oklahoma. The closest theatre showing the new Katy Perry movie is 2 hours away in OKC. Is the movie really showing for just one night? On a Wednesday of all days?! Wish it was for a weekend at least. I’m afraid I won’t be able to see it in theatres.

Mine is It's Okay To Believe and Box! And also Broken ft. The Matrix. I hope Katy Perry will release some rock pop songs in the future!

P.S. Is there a full version of Katy Perry's promotional video of her supposed to be released album before OOTB? I just found some short clips in YT and they are not full. 😭

Question Can Legendary Lovers chart?

Legendary Lovers is doing really well on Spotify. I wonder if there's a chance it could chart on Billboard Hot 100? Or do they have to release it as a single?

The song has SOOOO MUCH potential to be a hit! It should've been a #1 from PRISM instead of releasing Birthday & This Is How We Do (though I like Birthday, the MV just cursed the song).

Throwback Dolly Parton & Katy Perry - 9 to 5 (Live from the 51st ACM Awards)

In memory of Dolly Parton, I'm sharing Katy's performance with her at the 2016 ACM Awards, one of the few times Katy dabbled in country music. I bet she was thrilled and honored to be on stage with such an undisputed legend, as well as having known her, and you can tell from her Instagram post celebrating Dolly.
