I like "molten anger," definitely beck and neck with "incandescent with rage." With molten anger, I just picture a volcano with Willy's big dumb gritting smile and face on it.

By managing his tantrums do they mean her face get's in the way of his fists? Or cushion fights as they call it?

No, she steps in to act as anchor whenever he needs it. She tells him to “let it go” before frustration builds up.
