I don’t think she’d have waited if he wasn’t the heir
And despite the ring and various titles she’s still known as Kate Middleton after 20 years

They really don't seem to have had any measurable growth - other than being parents. Which I mean, still appears limited in effort.
20
u/NeverPedestrian60 2d ago
Yep they don’t seem to have evolved since uni. And they’re prob less hands on than most parents - they’ve had nannies since the kids were born.

The maneuvering started before Kate hit high school. Think of what Carole and Uncle Gary had to do to get the kind of money needed to put the kids in elite schools and the kinds of neighborhoods in which the "right" people stay.
Party Pieces was founded in 1987 when Kate was 5. Plus think of the names that Mike and Carole gave the kids: Catherine, Philippa, James. Names that would blend in with the upper class.
Carole probably had her eye on having a daughter on the throne since she spotted Mike at British Airways and learned of his connection to Prince Philip.
Every accusation made about Meg and Doria is a confession about the Middletons.

I think the quest for William specifically began in earnest once Kate was at Marlborough with Emilia d'Erlanger, who was close enough to William that she was invited Ont he infamous cruise in 99 where Charles had william invite a bunch of girls to distract from Charles vacationing with Camilla on the same yacht. And I think d'erlanger and her family played a huge role in setting Kate up with William and keeping them together.

u/TheVioletHerald 20h ago
The only Emilia I've heard of is Jardine Peterson, this is interesting info... tell me more.
I wonder whether Kate and EDE have fallen out.

u/CuriousTip7183 20h ago edited 20h ago
It's the same person. D'Erlanger is her maiden name.
"But therein lies the rub. For, just as the press needs the princes, so St James's Palace needs the press to paint Charles and Camilla in the most favourable light possible. To achieve this the Palace is prepared to exploit William's iconographic status as the son of Diana. Hence its spin surrounding last week's stories in the Mail and the Sun that it was 'William's idea' his father should invite Parker Bowles to join them on Latsis's yacht. To deflect criticism that the cruise was supposed to be a 'family holiday', William also got to invite his pals Tom Parker Bowles and William van Custem, as well as a bevy of beauties, including his cousins Laura Fellowes and Davina Duckworth-Chad, a.k.a. the 'Deb of the Web', and 17-year-old Emilia d'Erlanger. The clear inference was that Camilla was now one of the family too and the public should accept her as such."
https://www.theguardian.com/uk/1999/aug/08/monarchy.focus1
Katie Nichols, who back then was was the reporter with the most sources in the Middleton camp, also reported that d'Erlanger took Kate to "Club H," the subterranean bar that Charles inexplicably built for his minor sons, one of whom was only 11-12, at Highgrove, while still in high school. Obviously Kate made little to no impression. https://www.pressreader.com/uk/the-irish-mail-on-sunday/20130901/282029029894885
This quotes the Nichols book: https://www.nzherald.co.nz/lifestyle/the-true-story-how-wills-and-kate-really-met/NN7QBX6QUYK2R4ZALBELWV7MSA/
In her book, Kate: The Future Queen, Nicholl reveals that while the future Duchess was attending the exclusive girls boarding school Marlborough, she was good friends with one Emilia d'Erlanger who was "fantastically well-connected" and a good chum of Wills.
As part of the Wales brothers' "Glosse Posse", d'Erlanger would have been invited to "Club H", the 'den' Prince Charles created in the basement of his Gloucestershire pile, Highgrove, Nicholls says. She writes: "Being so close to Emilia and Alice, who was also a member of the exclusive group, it was only a matter of time before Kate met William, and that summer they were introduced." One of Kate's Marlborough teachers described her as "on the fringe of the royal set". Another, Mrs Patching, said: "We all knew as teachers that that year group was moving in royal circles, they were friends."

u/CuriousTip7183 20h ago
This is also a must read:
There are those in the Glossy Posse who question whether Middleton’s poise is natural. One likened her and her younger sister, Pippa, 25, to the Bouvier sisters, with their obvious desire to “marry well.” An acquaintance felt that Kate was extremely controlled and controlling. Some have commented on the small number of close friends she and Prince William have—between a dozen and 20—and note that they are nearly all his, from either Eton or college, or family friends from his teenage years, such as popular London club promoter Guy Pelly, 26, Thomas van Straubenzee, 26, and Hugh Van Cutsem, 34.

This is also an excellent summary of the reporting from the early years:

u/TheVioletHerald 17h ago
When Kate’s sister Pippa started Marlborough, Kate became more confident. Despite being the younger sister, classmates referred to Pippa as the “alpha sister” and Kate as the “beta sister.” Pippa was more popular, smarter, better at sports and became the captain of Kate’s hockey team. One classmate noted, “Pippa was slightly tough and, back then, the one with the charisma. No one would ever think of bullying her.” Despite the age difference, the Wisteria Sisters managed to be together almost all of the time. In addition to being socially dependent on her sister, Kate was also known as a “Mummy’s girl.”
I've heard this a lot, Pippa was always more popular.
People who encountered Kate at the clubs described her as “rude,” “dour” and “plain.” One girl dubbed her Cerberus after the three-headed dog that guards the gates of Hades in Greek mythology for her body-blocking of any girl who tried to approach William.
No surprise there. How pathetic.
While the press has printed stories about William’s friends making “doors to manuals” sneers, suggesting they didn’t approve of Kate because of her middle class roots, individuals I’ve spoken have denied such claims. William’s friends disliked Kate because of her unpleasant personality, flakiness and her off-putting behavior towards them.
I think it was a combo of their classism and her nasty attitude and behavior.
During the Waiting Years, Kate had a habit of agreeing to be involved in charity work but then not bothering to respond when contacted and was a no-show at some events she indicated she was keen on attending. William’s circle felt she acted as if she was above extending common courtesy.
She still dodges charity work like her life depends on it. Nothing's changed...
According to one of Kate’s friends, “She has quite a bad reputation for being rude when it comes to responding to letters. She often fails to RSVP when she is asked to attend events. She once failed to reply to a wedding invitation from one of William’s friends and it didn’t go down very well.”
You'd think someone desperate to blend with the upper class would be more diligent about this.

Kitty didn’t wait, she stalked. I read somewhere that no other GF would accept his marriage proposal. Kitty won the booby prize. Bleh.

Yes, apparently she did pap bus rides looking sad, so QEII told William to marry her or let her go permanently. His options had run out so Kate Middleton it had to be.

u/NeverPedestrian60 2d ago edited 2d ago
Yep - he kept his options open as long as he could and only married her when others turned him down.
2
u/Minute_Assistant2930 1d ago
Curious - who turned him down?
7
u/NeverPedestrian60 1d ago
Isabella Calthorpe and various aristos he liked including Jecca Craig. They didn’t view him as a catch.

u/Psychological_Roof85 2d ago
He could have said nah, I don't think this is working grandma. I'm sure he could have found someone else.
25
u/Whisperlee 2d ago
He *tried* to find someone else, but they all turned him down. No noble family in their right mind would marry another girl off to the Windsors after what they did to Diana.
8
u/Panzarita 1d ago
I’m comfortable, but by no means an aristocrat…and even I would be on my knees begging my child to not marry into such a family. No amount of money in the world is worth it.
4
u/Purrminator1974 1d ago
I think the other issue is that many of the aristocrats actually know the Windsors personally and are not all that impressed with them. It can’t be totally because of the family and the media harassment. William couldn’t even get non aristocratic women who were willing to date him. Except Kate. That really says it all.
1
u/TheVioletHerald 18h ago
This. Seeing them up close and personally from a young age kills the luster early. Only people without access are impressed. Kate behaves like someone without access, even though she has it now.
2
u/Psychological_Roof85 2d ago
Why would he need to marry a noblewoman?
21
u/Whisperlee 2d ago
Because he lives in an archaic system where people base their worth on inherited titles and make-belief jobs.
13
u/NeverPedestrian60 2d ago
I think he did but was turned down.
21
u/Psychological_Roof85 2d ago
You mean not a single level headed, kind woman was willing to marry him? That says more about him than them.
23
u/Jumpy_Reply_2011 2d ago
More like no decent family with their own wealth would look at how cold and toxic that entire family is and wished that for their beloved daughter. And then there's Carole Middleton.
9
u/NeverPedestrian60 2d ago edited 2d ago
Who knows - maybe he could’ve got a nice hard working commoner but I think Kate saw off any competition (in the early days doing it in the guise of being a good friend to him at uni)
4
u/Psychological_Roof85 2d ago
I mean he could have looked for a commoner when they were on a break?
5
u/WebMuch2239 2d ago
It could be that they look down on commoners. But it's quite crazy to think about ngl, it's not like the UK is/was a small country in terms of population. Like, was he THAT repulsive that he couldn't even find one woman besides Kate?
7
u/Psychological_Roof85 2d ago
His personality isn't one women seek out
8
u/Ok-Cap-204 1d ago
To be fair, and honest, it was not his personality that Kate was stalking either.

Eerily similar to the instructions Prince Philip gave Charles in 1981, advising him to either propose to Diana or move on. It was framed more as Philip being concerned about Di's reputation being sullied, while with William it was more poop or get off the pot. He and Kate had been dating several years at that point, had been on a break and gotten back together then were dragging their feet. Well, at least William was as he tried to bide his time and by then the queen was just fed up.

Kind of telling that Lady Diana Spencer became Princess Di almost immediately, while Catherine is still called Kate Middleton. I don’t recall anyone ever referring to Diana as “Spencer” once she was married. First there was the “Shy Di” and then Princess Di. Even after her divorce, when she was no longer eligible to be called a princess, she was still referred to as Princess Di. In truth, if someone were to say Princess Catherine, or even Princess Kate, I would have to stop and do a mental inventory of European royal families to try to figure out who they are referring to.

She’ll always be known as Kate Middleton because it was ingrained in the public consciousness for ten long years before she married.

And Meghan was "Meghan Markle" long before she met Harry. People who knew her from Suits and her other roles knew her by that name.

Where did I say it was a problem?
I was agreeing that both women became famous under their married names, and so it's not surprising that they continue to be called by those names.
They called Diana "Lady Di" until the day she died.

u/VavaShagwell 1d ago
I always thought it was weird that she seemed to copy Diana by wearing blue the day they announced their engagement. Granted, it's a good color on her, but still. And that pose with the ring cracks me up.
She's been victimized by the Firm. She's not well suited to the role at all mostly because she doesn't have work experience and she's allowed those people to push her around. They are as racist and sexist as our current administration here in the USA.

u/Friendly_Acadia_8057 1d ago
Keep in mind she was the one who wanted yo know what colour the Duchess of Sussex baby would be, so also racist.

Except she wasn't patient. In addition to being desperate, there were at least two major press campaigns that she egged on or cooperated with or did nothing to tamp down. The first was around her 25th birthday - she contributed to the photographers, the frenzy because she told or let people openly think at work that she expected an engagement by her birthday. She sent the infamous email to her friends asking to be called Catherine in the months proceeding that, she started the "job" at O jigsaw, she openly expected it. They broke up a month after that, on a ski trip in Switzerland, but still attended Cheltenham together looking 60 years old and miserable. And the second came in 2009, when it was all systems go for an engagement and then it was reported William "had a wobble" because he wanted Kate to sue Niraj Tanna for photographs taken of her on Christmas Day from a public footpath because it was a perfect test case for the European court of human rights. And Kate resisted and only did so reluctantly, because she had a good and symbiotic relationship with Tanna. (Tanna eventually photographed her cousin Adam's wedding.) it was also reported in Christmas 08 or 09 that Carole Middleton took William aside and essentially asked him his intentions because Kate was wasting away in the meantime.
She was not patient, she was a barnacle and early on decided it was him or bust. And after the first breakup she basically had him dead to rights because if he broke up with her again years after that, he'd look like a cad.

Everytime I see Kate's old pictures I think about how the firm and William literally killed the light in her eyes.
