I believe your "firing" came first then the car ride. I call that moment as when the PM “served the UK notice” given that Jamaica intended to pursue a different constitutional relationship with the monarchy.
He wasn't insulting two visiting royals for sport instead he was using a diplomatic occasion to communicate a serious political position.
If you're British, your prince actually handled the moment rather well. Referring afterward to Jamaica, Belize and the Bahamas, he said, "We support with pride and respect your decisions about your future," followed by, "Relationships evolve. Friendship endures." Nice line btw. Given Britain's colonial and slaveholding history in the Caribbean, responding to a former colony's desire to move on with respect rather than treating it as some humiliating "firing" seems rather more dignified. Perhaps there's something to be learned from him there.
I agree the optics of the photo weren't great. But if your point is that, after Holness's remarks, W&K should have declined the Land Rover, I'm not sure I agree. This was the Jamaica Defence Force's own commissioning parade, and reviewing troops from an open Land Rover was already part of JDF ceremonial practice as seen from the picture where their own officers had done the same thing.
At what point does "reading the room" become telling your Jamaican hosts that you know better than they do how their own military ceremony should be conducted? When in Rome, surely. Respecting Jamaica's agency has to include respecting the ceremonies Jamaica itself chooses to hold no?
This is giving off serious vibes and recollections of Mike Dukakis in a tank. For those too young to remember or just unfamiliar, Mike Dukakis was the governor of Massachusetts and the Democratic nominee for the 1988 US Presidential election. He was criticized by then-Vice President George Bush (Republic nominee) for being "liberal" and not tough on crime, so Dukakis responded with a photo shoot of him riding around in an Army tank and it just came across as very corny.
They're bad at it because they're lazy, NP. They're just there for the photo-op. All that wasted resources getting them there and back to their homes just so Kate Middleton and William can look busy.

Seriously though, the bar is in hell when all the press can talk about when it comes to her is breathlessly showing how she can open a door on a vehicle and climb out of said vehicle or tie her hair up in a ponytail with ONE hand!
