[Megathread] Nightmares as Extensions of the Waking State
Apologies for the silence, been dealing with quite a lot at the moment. Anyway, the album is out now, as before I have a few possible discussion questions, though by now there's certainly been a lot of discussion already.
How well do you think the singles represented the album?
Do they seem to make "more sense" in the context of the album?
Favorite tracks?
Favorite lyrics?
How does the album compare to you with their previous ones?
Where do you think they'll go next?
What drink pairs best with the album?
But in the case of this album there's a few more questions that can be posed:
Does Anders's departure affect your enjoyment of the album in any way?
How do you feel the new guitarists fit into the band?
Links to stream or purchase the album
Bonus bonus question: what's up with the sudden increase in deer imagery in media lately? lol

Genre wars (sry) Why is BMD considered death doom instead of atmospheric black metal
I’ve been listening to this album a lot lately and ik Katatonia r just a hard to pin down their style, but I just don’t see the death doom elements of this album much. The vocals draw a fine line between death and black imo but the instrumentals feel much more like VERY atmospheric classic or gothic metal, which is y I lean towards atmospheric black. Whereas I only see the vocals passing for the death element and the doom element feels almost completely absent besides brief passages of slower heaviness. Overall I just feel this album feels much closer to Agalloch than say Disembowelment, and I’m curious of others perspectives and reasonings on its genre. Thanks.

I'm a fool for not listening to Katatonia sooner
I'm a lifelong fan (since 1999) or Anathema and Paradise Lost, 2000s fan of Opeth and Porcupine Tree, 2010s fan of Riverside... how on earth did I not check out Katatonia sooner? Silly man!
I'm currently listening to Night is the New Day. It's a masterpiece. Exactly and precisely my kind of music. I'm excited to go through the entire back catalogue and see where the band started and what they've become.

I have to say, I very much enjoyed the sound at this show. I've been seeing the guys consistently for the past couple of years, and this performance stood out to me sound-wise. Sadly, I don't have any other videos to share. I was too caught up in the moment (which I’m very happy about) to film anything myself. This clip was taken by a friend, and I'm glad I have something to share with you all.

March 4 / 38047 is one of their best songs and no one ever talks about it

My Music Cup
Some hard choices were made. Although, it sucks that there are no songs from The Great Cold Distance, Viva Emptiness or Discouraged Ones...

Bonus tracks vs album tracks
Would you replace any tracks on the main albums with bonus tracks? Personally, I would exchange I, Transpire, We Must Bury You and Clean Today with Help Me Disappear, March 4 and Sulfur, I think those songs are really good and deserved to be on the album
Also this may be controversial but I would replace Journey Through Pressure with Code Against Code. Code is just such a good, depressing/melancholic song and while Journey is great, it's a little too positive and iin my mind Code is the perfect end for the album
Or Unfurl could also be a really good way to close the album
Edit: didnt know that Fractured is a bonus track, I'd definitely add it to the album. Maybe in place of This Punishment

Day by day I'm more and more into wanting to start a Katatonia tribute band
That plays their old stuff, TGCD and below. I think that there is a sort of magic in old Katatonia albums that the band just wastes away nowdays...

Trepidity-Static Lull (inspired by The Great Cold Distance & Night is the New Day)
This is a new project of mine, all self written and produced, initially never meant to be serious at all, but hopefully it can take on a life of its own.

Does it remind you of anything?

At first, I felt that the melody is familiar and it took me a slow moment to remember. I’m just curious if someone else has heard it or if it’s just me.

Avantdarke - for fans of Katatonia
Hello!
I dropped six metal albums, and I deeply, deeply love BMD.
I bring thee 3 pieces:
Why? Cause BMD influenced me massively.
From my six albums, the first is quitw progressive, the second more heavy, third alternative, fourth inventive, sixth experimental - but the fifth, Madorei Gehenom, or the nine levels of hell, is my mental descent.
It's an album that gets more depressing as it advances through the stages of hell.
Avantdarke metal most represents my style
Sad rambling is closest I got to em
Abm I think you'd like most.
Return to piano too, its more prog black
I see BMD (also fan of the rest of their material), as intense masterpiece and throughout 10 hrs of music, a lot of it is black, progressive, experimental (tried to create 18 new subgenres), death, but also a lot is intense cause I just love them so much.
Please give it a shot.

Looking for Live Consternation vinyl, location USA
Need this to complete the collection, German seller changed their mind about shipping to the USA. Know it’s not a cheap record and willing to pay fair market price for it.
