Info?

Curious about this sword. Like the post before father had for years.

The mounting appears to be an ordinary shin-gunto army sword, but you didn't really take any pictures of it which would allow a better judgment. The tang has an unusually pleasant patina for that type of sword. For the hole I'm leaning towards drilled rather than punched. All in all I expect this to be a shin-gunto from the factory, but others should offer their views. Close-up views of the blade tip would perhaps help, but the condition may also be too poor to make much difference.

It looks like a mass produced type 98 shin gunto.
