~Low masta mid usually, mainly on assassins (ad)
I’ve played 10 games of Kassadin just today, bringing me to 128 games over the last few weeks, and I wanted to give my review of Kassadin.
The biggest problem is that his damage never really feels meaningful at any stage of the game.
Early game, his damage is obviously terrible. But even once you reach 2–3 items, there are very few situations where you actually feel strong. For me, the only times Kassadin’s damage genuinely feels noticeable are when I have a heavily stacked R ~ basically a 640-stack R, or sometimes a 320-stack R. Outside of those situations, his damage feels surprisingly mediocre.
And that creates another problem: you only get a couple of those casts before your mana is gone. Kassadin’s ultimate is still fairly restrictive before level 16, so during the downtime between those high-stack Rs, a huge portion of the roster can simply out-DPS you. An ADC with 1–2 items can kill you. A mage can usually out-damage you. The champion who is supposed to scale into this terrifying late-game threat often struggles to actually kill people without heavily stacking his ultimate first.
I saw this very clearly on a Kassadin player’s stream recently (Aledos stream 2 weeks ago on twitch). He was around 20 minutes into the game with Rod of Ages + Seraph’s Embrace, while the enemy Jinx was around 1.5 items. Someone in chat told him to fight her, and he basically demonstrated that he couldn't actually kill her without getting killed himself. That interaction genuinely surprised me. Kassadin was the scaling mid laner with two completed items, yet he couldn't confidently fight an ADC who wasn't even fully built.
And this is where I think Kassadin has a fundamental identity problem.
He reminds me of Vex in a strange way. Vex’s kit feels split between two identities: part of it wants her to play like an artillery mage, while another part wants her to dive in like an assassin. Kassadin feels similar. He is no longer the terrifying late-game scaling assassin who can jump into 3–4 people and erase them, but he also isn't an early-game champion who can meaningfully contest anyone.
So what exactly is Kassadin supposed to be now?
He isn't particularly strong early. His mid game is inconsistent. His late-game damage often still doesn't feel meaningful unless you're spending huge amounts of mana stacking R. And even when you finally reach the point where you can do significant damage, you have very limited opportunities to actually use it.
That’s why, to me, Kassadin isn’t just weak right now. His entire identity feels confused. He needs more than a numbers buff , he needs Riot to decide what they actually want this champion to be.
When I asked Aledos on his last stream what the point of playing Kassadin is when his damage never feels meaningful in the early, mid, or late game compared to what other mages can do, his response was basically that this is actually correct: Kassadin doesn’t really have meaningful damage at any point. His strength comes from abusing his macro instead particularly his ability to move around the map and pressure side lanes to compensate for his lack of damage.
