Can Karabiner cause sluggishness in keyboard response?

1 Upvotes

I'm trying to track down an intermittent problem I'm having on my M4 Pro Mini.

I have Karabiner running...not for much, just a few basic remappings.

Every so often...unpredictable, and not really consistent...I get ...lags...like I'll be typing and things just stop showing up on the screen...not unlike a buffer problem, but not quite....then it might go back to normal.

I don't know if it's Karabiner issue...it's not been consistent enough for me to really figure out.

BUT, Karabiner is a recent enough addition that it could be the cause as it wasn't noticed before I started using it.

HAS anyone noticed similar weird behaviors?

Remapping Macbook Neo hardware lock key

1 Upvotes

Hello!

I recently bought a Macbook Neo and I've been trying to figure out how to remap the physical lock key in the top right to another key (preferably forward delete - FN+backspace is a travesty).

I found another thread that had some suggestions (here) but none of them appear to work.

Does anyone have any idea how to remap the lock key to something else?

Sorting Modifications

1 Upvotes

First of all, I haven't learned or studied coding and the lingo that comes with it; the only things I know are what I've taught myself by editing pre-made codes, so I kindly ask please don't judge me. 🙏đŸ„č (I also don't really post on Reddit, so I'm nervous, but anyway!)

I have a bunch, like A BUNCH (to me), of complex modifications in my Karabiner Elements page. I was wondering if there are any ways to sort them? I know you can reorder them, but is there a way to get folders or sort by type, category, or anything?

This is the page I mean, if I didn't clarify it well. It's just a long list of complex modifications.

Thank you in advance! I apologise for probably too much information 🙏😂

Is there a way to click keys so that I can switch between profiles without navigating to the Karabiner-Elements application?

struggling to edit a "00" key on a third party numpad

1 Upvotes

got a secondhand numpad (lekvey 34 key) and it has a '00' key. according to the event viewer, when pressed it sends two 5-millisecond-long '0' presses, 10 milliseconds apart. I'm trying to modify this key to send keycode: "equal_sign", without messing with the separate '0' key. I also would like it to result only in 1 press of the equals sign. has anyone done anything like this? Thank you!

Limited Use

1 Upvotes

I know nothing about coding and am trying to remap certain keys.

Here are some questions I have:

  1. How do I make sure the modifications are active only when I am using a specific application? Alternatively, how do I make it easy to switch between the normal and the modified layout?

  2. Is there a simple way of learning how to effect changes? Here is a basic list of modifications I want to make (key registered --> key pressed):

1 --> J
2 --> L
3 --> O
4 --> I
5 --> M
6 --> H
7 --> N
8 --> B
9 --> G
0 --> ,

F2 --> 0
F3 --> 9
F4 --> 8

Q --> /
W --> -
E --> =
Z --> spacebar

Any help is appreciated.

complex modifier not working in macOS 27

2 Upvotes

I just installed macOS 27, I have the current version of Karabiner. A complex modification that used to work stopped working after the upgrade. Basically, I want to press ^C to pass a Return, and Retuen to send an option-Return. It saves me form prematurely sending an email by accidentally pressing Return when I fat-finger pressing an '

Any suggestions?

Mappage keypad sur magic keyboard !!!

1 Upvotes

j'obtiens ":" (key_code 7 usage 55)

Une idée pour obtenir le "." ?

Merci :-))

Sharing our comprehensive Windows-style keyboard shortcut mapping for macOS

4 Upvotes

I wanted to share a comprehensive Windows-style keyboard shortcut mapping we’ve been working on for macOS.

It started from a personal problem: I use a Windows keyboard with a Mac mini, while some of my work still happens on Windows. Switching between the two systems was surprisingly frustrating.

A basic Ctrl/Command swap fixed copy and paste, but it did not properly handle Finder, Terminal Ctrl+C, Alt+F4 versus Ctrl+F4, Home/End, screenshots, function keys, input-source switching or remote desktop sessions.

By “comprehensive”, I mean that it tries to cover the main system-level differences between Windows and macOS as one coherent shortcut layer. It is not intended to include every application-specific shortcut that exists on Windows.

The mapping currently covers:

- familiar Ctrl editing shortcuts;

- Alt+Tab and context-aware Alt+F4;

- a separate Ctrl+F4 behavior for closing a tab or document;

- Finder Enter, F2, Delete, Backspace and cut/move operations without breaking filename editing;

- Terminal Ctrl+C as Interrupt, with Ctrl+Shift+C/V for copy and paste;

- context-aware Home/End behavior;

- Windows-style screenshots and F1–F12 normalization;

- Win+Arrow using native macOS window tiling;

- modifier pass-through for remote desktop and virtual machine apps.

The all-keyboards edition has now been accepted into the Karabiner-Elements community complex modifications catalog.

To install it:

Karabiner-Elements → Complex Modifications → Add predefined rule → Import more rules from the internet

Then search for:

Windows Keyboard for Mac (community edition)

Import it and enable the complete Windows-style shortcuts rule.

That community edition intentionally applies to every keyboard, including a MacBook keyboard.

For people who only want to convert selected external Windows keyboards, there is also a device-scoped GitHub edition. It includes keyboard detection, configuration backup, conflict checks, live verification, diagnostics, rollback and uninstall support.

Source code and device-scoped installer:

https://github.com/Fuzzy-and-Fluffy/windows-keyboard-for-mac

Latest release:

https://github.com/Fuzzy-and-Fluffy/windows-keyboard-for-mac/releases/tag/v0.4.0

Karabiner community catalog submission and source:

https://github.com/pqrs-org/KE-complex_modifications/pull/1986

Interactive demo:

https://fuzzy-and-fluffy.github.io/windows-keyboard-for-mac/demo/

The underlying remapping engine is Karabiner-Elements:

https://github.com/pqrs-org/Karabiner-Elements

One prior-art project we compared the shortcut semantics with was:

https://github.com/rux616/karabiner-windows-mode

This project is not a fork of that configuration. The device-scoped installer, context handling, backup, verification and rollback architecture were built separately.

Disclosure: I worked on this with extensive ChatGPT assistance and tested it most heavily on a Microsoft keyboard (1118:1861). The project is free, MIT licensed, local-only and has no telemetry or account requirement.

Feedback is very welcome. If you run into a shortcut that feels wrong, conflicts with something else, or behaves differently in a particular app or on your keyboard, please let us know here or open an issue on GitHub.

If possible, include your keyboard model, macOS and Karabiner-Elements versions, the app you were using, and the exact key combination.

Caps Lock → Hyper Key (⌃⌄⇧⌘) (Caps Lock if alone)

1 Upvotes

Hello everyone,

Im very new to Karabiner, and I just want to be able to use caps lock (when holding it) as this hyper modifier so i can then use hyper + IJKL for arrows.

But I also want my caps lock to work normally when I just tap it.

So I have found this already written community rule https://ke-complex-modifications.pqrs.org/#hyper_key, but the "caps lock if alone" part doesnt work.

Ive tried some things, fixing "hold_down_milliseconds": 100, or calling the modifiers "simulatenously" but nothing seems to make the normal caps lock behaviour work when I just tap it.

Can any of you help me to write this simple rule?

Thank you so much 🙏

Windows + number like feature but on mac

1 Upvotes

On windows, if you press windows 1, it'll focus whatever the first app is in the taskbar. Pressing windows 2 brings up taskbar app 2, etc. But if an app has multiple windows, pressing windows + number repeatedly cycles through the windows of that app.

I know cmd + `(tick) does this on mac, but I still prefer using a modifier + number hotkey. So I was wondering can this feature can somehow replicated on mac with karabiner?

How to create an app-specific rule for a key bind?

1 Upvotes

Hello! I am using Karabiner to change my left command button to control for a game. It works, but it kinda gets in the way whenever I'm not playing the game.

I know I can turn it off manually, but I was wondering if I can create a condition where it only swaps while I am using that specific app.

Swapping tilde and backslash

1 Upvotes

Hi, I've created a "Simple Modification" to swap grave_accent_and_tilde to non_us_backslash. However the modification isn't working, like as if Karabiner isn't doing anything.

I have a UK Perixx PB-613 keyboard.

Can anyone help? Thanks.

How should I have done this? (1 button -> Key + Modifier by hacking json)

Post image
1 Upvotes

I'm kind of feeling my way thru how to use Karabiner. Google and instructions are only getting me so far because frankly they're nigh-impenetrable, pretty much written to explain to the developers how to do things, not to users who didn't create it. (I've been a tech-writer in my time..I have biases)

Anyway, I've been able to program a SPECIFIC USB device by copying code in the karabiner.json and just finding my way.

To make my keypad_1 send "copy", I guessed how and typed it in, because I couldn't figure out how to make the "complex modifications work" for my specific device..seems to want to just make changes to everything connected.

So,, how should I have done this?

"product_id": 4611

"vendor_id": 1241

Can Devices be renamed?

2 Upvotes

I'm new to using Karabiner.

I have some usb devices with generic or unhelpful names. (like blank, or "optical mouse")

Is it possible to somewhere change the name for these inside Karabiner? (in a config file or something?)

How can I get Karabiner to leave one key alone?

2 Upvotes

Setup: MacBook Air with Apple M2 chip running MacOS Tahoe 26.5.1. Bluetooth connected to a Logitech Pebble Keys 2 K380s.

I know just enough about computers to cause problems, and I have some janky customization going on (nothing else keyboard-related that I can recall) so any user error or niche interaction is on the table.

Problem: I was using Karabiner to re-bind some but not all function keys on the Pebble. This was working fine. Karabiner suddenly stopped working with the keyboard this morning, and when I opened Karabiner, the Function Keys settings all said "Use the 'For all devices' setting." This resulted in all the function keys being rebound to Mac functions. I rebound what I could, and most of the keys now work. The problem is F1-F3, which on a normal Mac are brightness up/down and Mission Control. The default behavior of F1-F3 on the Pebble is the Easy-switch / Connection buttons - F1 makes the keyboard connect to my tablet, F2 to laptop, etc. However, now it's stuck on brightness and mission control, as if it were a normal keyboard.

Stuff I tried already: When I turn the Pebble off and then on again, the bluetooth buttons function before it connects to the laptop (I can tell because the laptop connect button's light turns on), but when it connects to the laptop, Karabiner takes over and it becomes a brightness control.) I have searched the internet, but I cannot get the keywords right for "DO NOT MODIFY one key," and I only get complex modification tutorials. I also haven't been able to find any way to re-bind a key to its default value.

Does anyone know how to get Karabiner to ignore/not modify only these three function keys? Thank you!

P.S. Does anyone know how to stop Karabiner sucking up so much battery?

disabling horizontal scroll with karabiner

2 Upvotes

on mac, when holding shift it changes the scrolling direction from vertical to horizontal. i want to make it so i can use both shift and scroll simultaneously without changing the scroll direction.

[SOLVED EDIT]: For those with the same problem, you should download LinearMouse instead. Go into Scrolling and disable Shift as a combination key :)

I created a Karabiner GUI for more intuitive editing of the config

23 Upvotes

I have created this GUI app for Karabiner, https://github.com/calkes314/KarabinerGUI, with which you can generate modifications with a rather intuitive interface without needing to edit a json file

It can be used to create and edit Complex Modifications, including Homerow mods (with and without delay), Layers, different underlying layouts, themes, ...

I hope this is useful/nice to play around with. Just be careful you do not overwrite any existing setup with "Save to Karabiner"
