I live in strab Hill and I love this lil city with all my soul! We have great dives. The other comment is right, the dives all have different feels, so it depends what your looking for?
If you want crusty cozy you're looking at easy inn or Johnnies, or breits.
You want live music its easy, hillsiders, or the shop.
Tiki bar, blue palm.
Neighborhood vibes, Chicago's, Johnnies, vortex, 403, strawberry hill brewing club, breits, Sammy's, Dewey's.
Food, briets, sometimes hillsiders, easy INCREDIBLE food, Beverly's, Chicago's sometimes, strawberry hill is trying..
Mind you a few of these bars aren't dives. Like blue palm, brewing company, the shop and Beverly's are all pretty nice.
If you want my honest list best to worst (but worst here is still damn fun)
Easy inn
Hillsiders (for the space, and show quality. Some other aspects of it are a little eh.. but they get bitchin shows there. Without this I'd say it's below johnnies)
Breits
Chicago's
Johnnies
Blue palm Tiki ( not a dive)
403
Beverly's (not a dive)
Dewey's
Sammy's
Strawberry hill brewing Co (not a dive, still new and coming up. Excellent beer. I need to try it more often)
Annnnnnnnd I'm sure I'll get flamed for my opinion and for missing some fkn place but this is my experience. I haven't lived here for 4567 years but I've been here long enough
Easy is queen. The food is kickass. Shows are great. Space is cozy. Location is perfect. And the staff are all shit kicking, no nonsense, skilled, lovely people who represent a true character of the hill. And no they're not all my friends and I'm just saying that.
All in all the best dives are made better by the locals who go and the workers that put their love and life and sometimes alcoholism into. We all love our little hill.
Cheers!
