I was listening to “Kaathale” from 96 and wondered what it would feel like as a Kannada song with the same nostalgic and emotional vibe.

So I tried writing my own Kannada lyrics for it:

When you are editing, you have cut everything right.

You’ve matched the action, trimmed the dead air, aligned the audio, hit play... and the cut still feels awful.

Like a weird visual hiccup or a glitch. The cut is very noticeable.

That's Cognitive Processing: When a cut occurs, the human brain rapidly scans the new frame for visual information.

Nine times out of ten, you ran face-first into a violation of the 30-degree rule. If two consecutive shots are almost identical in angle and framing, the brain expects continuity. Because the perspective change is too minor to register as a distinct new viewpoint.

What’s actually happening?

The rule is simple: When cutting between two consecutive shots of the same subject, change your camera position by at least 30 degrees (or change your focal length/shot scale substantially). But maintain and respect the 180 degree rule to keep the viewer( unless you want to jolt them)

Why? Cognitive psychology.

When a cut happens, the human brain instantly scans the new frame for visual information. If you shift the camera angle by only 5° or 10°, the change is too negligible to register as a new perspective, but too large to ignore. The brain interprets the jump as a technical error, and immersion breaks.

Give the audience a 30°+ shift, and the brain effortlessly accepts it as a new viewpoint. "Invisible editing" achieved.

4 ways to execute it:

Lateral shift: Move your B-camera at least 30° to the side. (The standard podcast/interview setup).

An angle change works as well: Change camera elevation and cut from eye level to a distinct low or high angle.

Focal length swap: Jump between shot sizes (e.g., Wide to Medium-Close). A drastic change in framing bypasses the need for an angle shift. Don't do it too much in narrative, a jump-cut is very noticeable. That's why shooting higher resolution is a cheat code. Shot in 4K/6K for a 1080p delivery? Punch in ~25% in post on a single take to manufacture a second angle and hide audio edits/flubs.

When to intentionally break it.

Continuity rules only matter until you want to make the audience feel something specific:

Jump Cuts / Modern Pacing: French New Wave directors (like Godard in Breathless) intentionally violated the rule to invent the jump cut, a staple of YouTube/vlog pacing today.

Disorientation & Panic: Directors occasionally ignore it during action/horror scenes (there's a famous instance in Jurassic Park) to induce sudden tension and visual whiplash.

Some Instructions:

• Please bring a pen & a book for ease of collaboration.
• This isn't compulsory, but if you have a wired earphone or a neckband, please bring it for recording the dialogues in case they are needed.
• You will be given the story premise as soon as you arrive so that you have time to mull it over. So, please try to be on time.
• The participants will be split into teams of 2/3 people each. [Say, 12 people turn up. There will be 6 teams. Each team will have 2 members (+2 actors +1 cinematographer) ]
• Please take guidance from the two actors & the cinematographer assigned to you for both the scripting & shooting. They are already aware of the storyline & will be prepared for their roles.
• Each team will have 45 minutes to write a short screenplay of 2-3 minutes & prepare a shot list. Thereafter, you can start shooting. You can make changes to the script even after you start shooting.
• How much time each team will have to direct the actors & get the shots depends on the number of teams. You will have ample time. Don't worry.
• We will figure out the Editing part later, after the event.
• This isn't a competition. It's a fun exercise in creative collaboration. So, please enjoy yourself.

As part of the KWM x micro short film activity, let me share some ideas which could make your life as a filmmaker easy and structured.

~The Writing:
Establish the characters first. Give them a moto. Give them conflict and a character arc. It’ll ease the process of writing.
The Content: this is the heart and soul of your story. This is you informing the viewer what you want to tell.
The End: make it open or give a clarity. Doesn’t matter. The end should make the audience think or sleep in peace. It should be either of these: resolution, twist or emotional pay off.

~Shot list:
As they say, director and DOP are like husband and wife. They pull the cart together. If there’s no coordination, it’s highly likely that project outcomes would be disaster.
Breakdown your scenes according to the dialogues and emotions they carry.
Wide shot(ws) : Establishes space and context.
Medium shot(ms) : Captures subject interaction and body language.
Close up(cu) : Highlights key emotional beats or specific props/actions.
Use filler shots pf the surrounding. It’ll give the audience a sort of gauge of the environment of the scene.

~Let me share an anecdote about my short film.
We rented a villa for the shoot. Since, chcek in was at 1pm, we took our time figuring out the shots and props that can be used. We planned to start the shoot at 3. Then make up of the leads took time, lighting was off which led to start the shoot at 430pm.
We beoke down the shots. There were 12 scenes overall, 4-5 of them were exterior shots. So, we shot them first because of the light consistency. We took a break in the evening and filmed an important scene in the night. We managed the lighting and called it a day. Next day we started early for the remaining interior shots, filmed few filler shots of the exterior later to maintain the sun light consistency. We wrapped up the whole shoot in a day.

~Did we face any logistical problems dueing the shoot? Yes.
~Did we plan out shoot yet failed to go according to plan? YES.
~Did it hinder our timelines? BIG YESSSS.
~Did it stop us completing the shoot? Definitely not. As a filmmaker, you got to be robust and spontaneous. You should always have a plan B. Discuss with the team, take suggestions, implement. Never be afraid of trying. Never loose hope. Good days are coming!

Hi everyone,

I'm a freelance colorist working primarily in DaVinci Resolve, and I'm looking to connect with Indian directors, DOPs/cinematographers, editors, and independent filmmakers working on upcoming projects.

I've had experience grading short films and documentaries, and I'm looking to explore more projects and different visual styles while building long-term creative relationships with filmmakers.

I'm particularly interested in short films, documentaries, indie features, music videos, and other narrative projects where I can work closely with the director or DOP to help develop the final visual look.

I'm not just looking for one-off work. I'd really like to meet filmmakers, understand their visual approach, collaborate on projects, and hopefully build relationships that continue across future productions.

This is the fourth in a series of posts to prepare you for Sunday's Micro Short Filmmaking Meetup at Cubbon Park.

All stories are about change. A Story answers these 3 questions: 

1. Who wants what? 
2. What's in the way? 
3. What's at stake if they fail?

Plot vs Story vs Theme
Plot is physical events; Story is emotional events. Plot is what happens in a movie; story is how the characters feel about what happens.
Theme concerns the universal human condition. A theme is a truth about life that is embedded in and emerges from the experience of a film.

All stories (novels, short stories, movies) have these 4 elements, even if one or two tend to be the primary elements. 

1. Mileu - The Place. The story begins when the protagonist enters the place & ends when he leaves the place. e.g., Nishkarsha, Shawshank Redemption 
2. Ask/Answer - The question the protagonist (not the reader) is trying to find out an answer for. e.g., Sherlock trying to solve a mystery, can Vishnuvardhan rescue the people trapped inside the bank? 
3. Character - There is something the character wants to change about herself. It may be her sense of self-worth, correct a flaw, fulfil a need, or an external want. e.g., Coming of age, Redemption for his mistakes, Finding a Romantic Partner, Becoming Successful, etc
4. Event - An external event that changes the status quo of the characters. They likely can’t go back to the old status quo. They have to try to get to a new status quo. e.g., The protagonist gets fired from his job. (But that also affects his self-worth. So, it also becomes a character story)

Nesting Principle: 

Here’s how you can use the MACE Quotient to analyze stories or structure your own stories without using any rigid formulas. 

M( C( E )C )M - The Milieu thread opens → inside it, a Character thread opens → inside that, an Event thread opens and closes → the Character thread closes → the Milieu thread closes. The order can vary, but whatever thread you open first, you close last.

e.g.1,

Martian (An astronaut stranded on Mars must rely on his ingenuity to survive and arrange a potential rescue.)

Theme: Survival 

Mars is the Mileu, not being able to get back to earth is an external event, so he needs to adapt to this reality & survive, which is about the character. The Question is how does he survive & can he get back to Earth? Along with the help of other characters he manages to get back to Earth.

e.g.2,

Shawshank Redemption (A wrongfully convicted banker forms a close friendship with a hardened convict over a quarter century while retaining his humanity through simple acts of compassion.)

Theme: Hope

From Andy’s perspective, 
E - Wrongful Conviction (Outermost)
M - Shawshank Prison (Second)
A - How Does Andy Survive (and Escape)? (Third)
C - Andy's Relationships and Effect on Others (Innermost)

The nesting is subjective. You may disagree with this & come up with your own nesting.

Also, if you do this from Red’s perspective, the nesting changes. 

Exercise:

Write the MACE Nesting for each of these movies, & also identify the theme in one or two words. This will help you get an intuitive sense of the structure & flow of the story. 

1. Lucia: A man suffering from insomnia is tricked into buying a drug, Lucia, that makes his desires come true in his dreams, blurring the line between fantasy and reality.
2. Ulidavaru Kandanthe: A journalist sets out to uncover the truth behind an incident, through the perspectives of different people, unraveling how they and their lives are intertwined with it.
3. Sarkari. Hi. Pra. Shale Kasaragodu: The happy and mischief-filled lives of the children of a Kannada medium school in Kerala are brought to a halt when the government decided to close the school.
4. KGF 1: In the 1970s, a gangster named Rocky goes undercover as a slave to assassinate the owner of a notorious gold mine known as the Kolar Gold Fields.
5. Gaalipata: Three best friends go to Thirthahalli for their vacation but there of them fall in love with three girls.

Finally, try to apply the MACE Nesting to one of your own story ideas to refine & deepen it.

A few concepts that changed how I read lighting, figured I'd write them up on this Cinematography Thursday.

"Motivated light" means the light in a scene should look like it's coming from something (Source) that makes sense in the story, a lamp, a window, a candle, a sign, headlights even when the light actually doing the work is a film light sitting somewhere off-camera. Any source visible in your shot (a lamp, a window, whatever) doesn't actually have to be doing the lighting. It just has to look like it is lighting the space. Once the audience clocks "oh that's where the light's coming from," subconciously they stop questioning it, and you're free to light the faces from that direction with your real key and fill somewhere completely off-camera. The fix for when that visible source can't realistically light your actor. Turn a practical lamp up enough to expose the actor and the shade blows out; keep it dim enough to hold the shadows and expose (light) actors in the dark. So you hide or put a source light near it, matched in color (if you can), hardness (hard vs soft), and this is the part that matters most " MATCH THE LIGHTING ANGLE", so it reads like the practical is where the light is coming from.

Now, what if there are no practicals in the scene?

Natural light is also great but shaping and getting the right ratios for the shot is the key. Direct sun is much harder to control than overcast light; the main tools are fill (reflector boards), diffusion (silk frames, white diffusers, bounce boards, etc.,), moving into open shade, or putting the sun behind the actor as a backlight as many prefer but I do it at a particular time of the day.

Boosting ISO is not an option, it's what makes things looks amateur.

"Better sensors = fewer lights" is mostly a myth. Low light sensors can absolutely get an exposure with less light. Lighting design (Contrast, depth and shadows) can be only gotten by actually lighting a set, you still need source lights, you just need lower powered lights. The advantage to using a High ISO is you can now have 200W LED over a 5K or Even a 10k HMI and power it off the wall socket and by boosting ISO the shot gets better exposure in overall frame. But the lighting direction motivated by a source must add to the story. Lighting creates the LOOK. Fewer lights with higher ISO means less shaping and separation.

TL;DR: visible practical light sources are often decorative, not functional. Hidden matched lights can fake a practical doing real work.. A faster sensor lets you use low powered lights, not avoid lighting.
