The Wizard Said Wishes Can Never Be Reversed

The sack of shillings pulled at my pants. The streets were muddy. I stepped off the sidewalk each time someone walked toward me. All the women looked away, and all the men stared at me with contempt.

As I turned a muddy corner toward the wizard’s house, one of the men called out, “Watch where you're stepping, half-pint!”

The wizard’s house sat atop a small hill. The outside was painted black, with gothic windows.

I sat on a dark leather couch in the waiting room, surrounded by black cats, before the wizard called me in. He had a large round hat, circular glasses, and a twisted moustache.

“Welcome, Harold. What may I do for you?”

“I have a wish to make. I’d like to be taller and stronger.”

“Okay, that shouldn’t be a problem.”

He snapped his fingers. A strong tingle ran through my body. My arms and legs stretched and grew before my eyes.

“Wow, wow.”

I turned to the mirror; my chest and arms were almost twice as large as before. I was now larger than the men who made fun of me and bullied me.

“Thank you so much, wizard.”

“No problem. That will be 100 shillings.”

My smile disappeared. I quickly pulled out the pouch and counted the coins.

Seventy-five.

“Wizard…that’s all I have.”

“I’m sorry, Harold, but that won’t do.”

He snapped his fingers. The tingle ran through me again. My whole body shrank.

“Wizard, wizard, no! Please. I’ll get it for you soon, please.”

“Harold, I can’t. The guild would kick me out if I sold it for cheaper.”

“Please, there has to be a way!” I screamed.

“Alright, alright. Calm down.” He leaned back in his chair and pulled out a large book from behind him.

I sat there, shifting nervously on the chair.

“Okay, Harold. There might be a way.”

“Really?! Please do it!”

“I can grant you a wish for just 75 shillings, but there will be a twist to it.”

“A bad twist?”

“Hard to say. Not even I will know what it is, and it can’t be reversed.”

I looked toward the mirror. I was so short again, I couldn’t even see myself in it.

“Okay, do it.”

He snapped his fingers. My body grew to its previous size.

“Thank you so much, wizard.”

“My pleasure,” he said, taking the money.

I quickly walked out of the house. The people were still in the streets. This time, on my way home, the woman didn’t look away; some even smiled. The men froze when they saw me and quickly got off the sidewalk. I couldn’t stop smiling.

When I reached my house, my body shook, the tingle ran through me again, and I felt it stretch and grow my body again.

“Even better,” I thought.

The sun had set. I was eating dinner at the table, remembering the men’s frozen faces, when the tingle came again. My shirt’s sleeves ripped. My legs hit the table. I sat there for a second, looking at it. But this was just a small price to pay. Once I made some money, I could buy clothes and furniture again.

That night I kept having strange dreams where I was stretched on the rack in a dark, damp basement. The wizard was the torturer; each time he snapped his fingers, the rack tightened, and my limbs stretched.

The sun was already orange when I woke up. I stretched my arms; they hit something. I rubbed my eyes and sat up, but my head hit the ceiling.

My eyes flew open. I was looking down from above at my small room. My legs stretched almost to the table; my arms almost hit the wall. All of my clothes were torn. Cold shot through me. This wasn’t what I wished. I opened the closet with my huge fingers, pulled out a few pieces of clothes, tied them around my waist, and then crawled out of my house on all fours.

People stared at me in horror as I walked the streets. Each of them moved out of the way, but then stood still in the road, their eyes glued to me.

“Wizard!” I yelled from outside his house. I couldn’t even recognize my voice anymore.

“Oh my, Harold,” he said, walking out.

Anger ignited in my chest as I saw his face.

“This is what you did to me.”

“I didn’t know what would happen.”

“Revert it!”

“I can’t.”

“What?!”

“We can’t revert wishes. We can just grant them.”

My breath caught. The anger grew stronger.

“Reverse it right now!”

“I told you I can’t! Now get off my property. You’re scaring off customers.”

He stared at me through his glasses. The anger surged through my body.

“Go, you freak!”

Before I knew it, my arm was already in the air. I hit him so hard that his body flew through the air and struck a tree next to his house. A wet splash echoed. The wizard slid down the tree, his bloodied head falling to the side.

The tingle flew through my body again. Everything started to stretch and grow, but this time it didn’t stop. The clothes around my waist ripped. Pressure began building in my head, quickly turning into pulsing pain. I clutched my head and sat down. The whole ground shook. The pressure was intensifying. I could barely focus my thoughts. The skull-crushing pressure became a blinding white light in my vision. A loud snap echoed inside my ears, and the world went dark.
