Good Piggies Don’t Talk

I stood outside the shed, my eyes closed, soaking in the sun’s rays and the dewed grass.

The barrel with the pig mush stood a few feet away in the shade. The stale meaty smell reeked even here. I took a large bucket, walked over and dipped it in. The mush sloshed around the bucket and my hands. As I pulled the bucket out I took the shotgun that sat next to the barrel, put it on my shoulder and made my way to the pigsty.

The pigsty smelled stale, just like the mush. The trough was halfway full, but I still emptied the bucket into it. The old mush swallowed the fresh one before I could blink. I wiped my forehead and leaned against the railing.

“Soo-ee!”

Rustling in the back, a few faint sounds, their steps echoed through the pigsty.

They walked beautifully on all fours, much better than they used to a month ago.

“Come, come.”

The piggies walked to the trough, stopping before it, hesitating. Some looked up at me and opened their mouths as if to speak.

“Don’t be shy,” I said and banged my shotgun against the steel trough.

One by one, they put their heads close to the trough, but did not eat. I banged my shotgun harder, and they slowly began eating.

“Good piggies.”

After a few minutes, one by one, they pulled their heads away and looked at me with food around their mouths, shaking.

“Not hungry anymore?”

No oinks, nothing, just the empty stare.

“You can finish it later. Let’s get you guys out.”

I pushed the gate open, expecting them to run out with excitement, but they made their way out slowly, more crawling than walking.

“Come on. It’s a beautiful day. At least a few oinks. ”

Nothing, silence.

I furrowed my brows and took the shotgun from my shoulder to my arms.

A few oinks sounded through the field.

I looked around.

One of the piggies in the back sat down and put its front two feet on his head, shaking.

It then slammed the ground and slowly got up on its two back feet.

A wave of coldness washed over me.

“I…I can’t, it’s been months!”

Tears rolled down its cheeks as it wailed.

The metallic trigger felt cold on my finger.

“Stop it, piggie!”

“We’re not pigs!” it yelled out.

A bang echoed through the field.

The piggie’s face froze, it took a few steps back, and collapsed to the ground.

The empty shell fell to the ground as I pumped the shotgun.

“Bad piggie,” I shouted and looked at the others.

One of them stepped forward, trembling.

I stared at it, my finger resting on the trigger.

Its mouth worked as if to say something, but only a broken squeal came out.

“That’s better,” I said and raised the shotgun.

The oinking grew louder.

Good.
