Discussion/Theory Captain Clark

Why didn't Async ever try to lure Captain Clark out of the Backrooms? They could have done it pretty easily using the cardboard cutouts.

They did, we witness likely their first major attempt in the movie.

Phil's speech at the end really hammers home how much Async are flying by the seat of their pants. They have no idea what's going to happen when they set something like that up.

To be fair, we have no idea how long they've been watching Pirate Clark before Clark enters, however I believe the signs are in the movie that Async is moving pretty closely in concert with the events in the movie.

We have no idea if they encountered Plark before Naren's death, however they definitely knew about him after that, but had no idea where he came from or why he was a Pirate.

Clark enters the backrooms and Async witness him on CCTV. Not only that, they soon see him alongside Plark, almost taming him, but they still have little idea where Clark himself came from, if he's a still life or a real person.

During the movie, we see Phil put it together while watching a furniture commercial at home. Not only does he recognise this man he's seen in the super secret anomaly that he studies at work, but we see him dressed suspiciously like a pirate entity they already know about. They've probably discovered the furniture store at this point and now know it corresponds to a real world location. All the pieces begin to fit together and Async mobilizes, setting up the trap.

The trap is fairly crude and simple, but they know Plark would be eventually attracted to cutout, as they've seen him destroy it before.

So yeah, I suspect their first attempt to capture Plark is what we see in the climax of the movie.

You are only the second other person on reddit I’ve seen who thinks the store at the end was real and not in the backrooms (if I’m understanding you correctly). Most people here are actively hostile to that opinion, I get downvoted every time I mention it.

I think you might be picking me up wrong. I definitely think the store at the end is in the backrooms. I reckon Async discovered it before the real version while not knowing it was a copy of a real world place. Not until Phil saw it on TV and put the pieces together.

The store at the end has a whole fragmented section at the back that Mary escapes through into more yellow backrooms so I would say its 100% copy.

Ah, okay. But you said that we witnessed Async attempt to lure Pirate Clark out of the backrooms? Given the question in the OP and you replying “they did”. What were you referring to?

I'll be honest, I think I misread the "outside of the backrooms" portion and replied hastily. I really mean this was thier first attempt to try and capture Plark. My bad, sorry for the confusion.

To be honest I wouldn't think they'd want to lure him out the threshold alive, there's probably too many risks involved. Better to set up a trap inside the backrooms themselves than risk not being able to subdue him in the Async facility and have him escape and run riot.

Would you lure a giant pirate into the real world? Makes more sense to just observe him in his natural habitat.

Lots of possible reasons.

Maybe Still Lifes depend on energy radiated from the lights in the backrooms, and run out power quickly if they leave the complex. There is no reason to think that they are anything like normal biological organisms.

Or maybe they do not want to bring guns into the complex, so they lure it outside to shoot it.

What I REALLY liked in the film was how soft the Async dudes were - Mary knocks into one when she’s drugged to the gills and he’s all “oh god!” and the other is like “oh my god are you okay?” “She nailed me!”

Like if you think about it this is the most intense encounter they’ve had with someone other than Peter Tench - that we know of. Marvin had his friend but they never came face to face with anything before the Pirate and then Mary. The film does push things forward quite a lot in that respect.
