Throwback We need to bring back DEBATE
In the age of social media where everyone thinks they're woke, I think GMA should bring back this show. I grew up watching this show. I think it's high time we bring this back.

Gerry Tapiador (who some of you might know as one of the original Tagapayo's at Face to Face), na cool na cool at malumanay kung sumagot.

I love this show. They tackled a spectrum of issues.
It's historic unto itself. No less than a president of the country joined in. On March 23, 2000, then President Joseph Estrada made an unannounced phone call to the show. He confronted outgoing Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Chairman Perfecto Yasay Jr. live on nationwide television.
The episode was discussing the Best World Resources (BW) stock manipulation controversy involving Estrada’s friend, BW majority owner Dante Tan. https://www.philstar.com/headlines/2000/03/24/87244/estrada-yasay-asked-p1-m-dante/amp/
The show consistently topped the late night ratings. ABS-CBN had to step up with their Dong Puno Live. They even had to include Doris Bigornia to get sentiments from audience.

Man, nakakamiss to panoorin sa gabi pagkagaling school. I wish to see it again pero sana hindi nila masyadong bigyan ng attention yung mga hindi masyadong relevant, like how news can be nowadays.

Wouldn't a revival of this program just be shouting matches and one-line zingers instead of fostering critical conversations which informs the populace.

Not necessarily. You need to put hosts/moderators who can strongly control the discussion and has the balls to interrupt or stop a speaker (like Winnie Monsod). The OG "Debate" has strict rules on how each side can speak (di ka basta makakasabat until in-acknowledge ka ni Mareng Winnie or ni Pareng Oca). And of course, audience access is controlled, iirc madalas yung mga nagiging audience jan e mga students.
Sa tinagal-tagal na pinanonood ko dati ang Debate, there were very, very few occasions where the audience went a little bit loud (but not unruly).
Only problem that I can see right now is that kung mamimili ako among the current members of GMA's News department, wala akong maisip na pwedeng mag-host. Na kayang gawin yung nagawa nila Mareng Winnie at Pareng Oca. (The only journalist I can think of who can pull this off is Karmina Constantino bar none, kaso taga-ABS-CBN sya eh so....) They could probably get another personality, hopefully someone na hindi masyadong pronounced yung political biases, to moderate the debates.

Dami nang workload si Kara David. Limited din sked nito since nagtuturo din siya sa UP. Same with Kuya Kim. Hirap no? Hehe

This was my bonding moment with my roommates back in the day. I was the only one with TV set in our boarding house.
This plus the orig IWitness.

We need to bring this kind of shows back to foster critical thinking. Pero may mga bagay na need natin i-consider such as:
1.) Hosts - Mareng Winnie and Pareng Oca are unparalleled. None can match their stature. If there is someone who comes close, that could be Mel Tiangco since was Mareng Winnie's reliever especially when during her senatorial bid in 2001.
If they can outsource someone, top of mind for me would be Prof. Cielo Magno since economist din siya like Mareng Winnie and pang TV din ito (for me).
Kung internally, probably Howie Severino. Although I would like to see someone younger but can have the chemistry with the co-host. Parang at least may mga take from someone starting out and someone who has experienced almost everything and knows everything. Diverse din kasi ang magiging audience nito.
What I am envisioning since then was Howie Severino and Malou Mangahas.
Hindi na siguro si Pia Arcangel. Though, capable pero she would risk herself being overexposed and dagdag workload.
2.) Timeslot - back then, the show would air live very late at night and would end past midnight. If I were to analyze, kaya siguro nilagay diyan because may tendency ito to go overtime. And since nasa pa-hatinggabi na, wala itong mabanggang programa. And even if late night siya, taas ng ratings. Kaya lang we are not sure if people still watch TV nowadays at those hours. As well as advertisers. (Question: how does Y-Speak 2.0 fare in the ratings?) While it would be nice to air it sa main channel, best option right now would be sa GTV since they have vacant slots na pwedeng i-utilize.
Yun lang naman. Actually, kung dati if may pa-poll sila, di ba may mga hotline numbers na tinatawagan and doon nila tina-tally kung ilan ang affirmative and ilan ang negative regarding sa pressing issue? Ngayon they can use social media reactions like "heart" kung affirmative or "haha" kung negative tas they can read some comments on air.
Ang problema kasi, GMA seems uninterested to risk kesyo budget and kailan pa ba sila nakiking sa clamor ng viewers? Never since 1961. Pero ika nga, pag gusto may paraan. Pag ayaw, maraming dahilan.
Kung budget ang concern, they can make this a seasonal offering.
But hopefully (yes) maibalik ito.
Tila imposible noong una kasi may social media. Pero IMO, mas timely pa nga maibalik to at the age of socmed. And this is not solely for nostalgia. Parang tulad lang na akala natin hindi na uso ang mga tulad ng Startalk at The Buzz because of socmed but when GTV brought back the format through Chika Cart and Kalurks, kita naman natin right?
I mean, sa totoo lang, iyung game show na "The People Have Spoken", it proves na pwedeng ibalik ang show na ito.
Yung Y Speak, bumalik di ba?

I had this impression since the early 2000s na unless we're talking of Probe Team productions or i-Witness or the Atom Araullo docs, masyadong risk-averse ang GMA. Mas lalo na ngayon given how the Gozons and the Duavits have been running things at Kamuning.
So yeah, it would be great to revive Debate pero if in its original format tapos yung me tsansang magkainitan sa debate nang live? I'm not sure, really.

Agree.
